Jumping on the "Common Sense" comments. I love it when people remark that we, as safety professionals and Coaches, are only professing what is tantamount to common sense. I agree!!! All I ask is that people use it.

Exactly! Common sense is key, but it is amazing how often it gets overlooked.

I like See it, Understand it, Sort it. It's even simplifying the mantra we currently use SAFER - See it, Assess it, Fix it, Evaluate it, Review it.

We’re so sorry that’s been your experience. We firmly believe that people are a company's most invaluable asset, and their safety must always take precedence. Safe operations need to be embedded in the very fabric of every organization.

I tell people that I don't care what order they place safety in, provided that they think safety before they make the next move. This causes safety to be the trigger before starting the next move.

I joined a company in January 2023 who wasn't at the cutting edge of doing safety well, but had sufficient enthusiasm across the frontline workers to enable me to do exactly what you guys are suggesting i.e. Getting people involved through monthly themes that were supported by introducing a TH-cam video and some question and answer sessions at the weekly toolbox gatherings. The themes we adopted were as follows: January - Slips/Trips/Falls, February - Housekeeping, March - Working in isolation, April - Take 5, June - Forklifts / mobile equipment, July - Manual Handling, August - Spills, September - Working at height, October - Hazard Id/Reporting, November - safety Culture, December - safety at the beach. You'll note from the December topic that we are in the Southern hemisphere ;) We also promoted all of this with a League ladder that was shared across all sites and depicted the performance of each site. The difficulty was measuring it all fairly as there is a huge difference between site numbers. I just thought I'd share this with you as it mirrors the content of this podcast.

I have had the privilege of working with a very Health and Safety mature organsiation, where I was introduced to the best tool I have used and seen it was called "OOPPS." Yes, it sounded ridiculous the first time I heard it, but it worked really well. The definition of OOPPS is "When you are unsure = Outside, Of, Procedures, Parameters, Processes, Situation as you expect it to be." If an OOPPS occurred during a task, the crew would STOP and SEEK OUT HELP Leadership within the organisation would not only talk it they walked it. Leadership would expect crews to stop work if something was not right. They would rather a work crew to take the time to prevent an “Unwanted Event” before it occurs, than have someone go through one! Work crews were educated in OOPPPS, that it is a major trigger and is indication that something isn’t right, and that an error trap may exist! It is a signal where there was an expectation for crews to take action and do something to avoid the error trap. I have seen the OOPPS tool potentially save lives and prevent serious injuries. Great episode thoroughly enjoyed the conversation.

Enjoyed today's discussion. I don't know how many times as a Safety Professional I have been asked to right a JSA for a particular job I have no idea about. Then when I tell them I have no idea, they respond, "Hey but you're the 'Safety Guy'" as though I am some great oracle of safety. I couldn't agree more with how important it is to get a work crew involved in the JSA process.
