Originally uploaded back in June of 2021. I fixed the vertical sideways view to a better proper landscape view. Billy The Kid and his gang were captured here on Dec. 23rd, 1881. I spent nearly 3 hours trying to find this spot in 97 degree weather in NM because my map was marked wrong lol ( found two rattlesnake skins and a coyote skull in the process though). Yeah, somehow, a horse got shot and collapsed in the doorway, trapping Billy and them inside. In the morning, Garrett cooked up a breakfast that smelled really good and Billy yelled out to that affect that he was starving and it smelled good. Garrett told him, if they surrender and come out, they too can have some breakfast. Somehow they cleared the horse out and Billy surrendered. Billy said he felt tricked because he thought it was a large posse outside, but turned out to be just Garrett and another guy (if I recall right). He was then taken to Las Vegas to await trial which was clear down in Mesilla (Las Cruces). After he was found guilty in Mesilla, Garrett took him all the way across White Sands, over the Sacramento Mountains back to Lincoln, where he was to hang by the neck until dead. That was a long trip around NM. However, Billy ended up escaping after shooting Deputy Bell and Bob Olinger in Lincoln. Garret finally caught back up with him and killed Billy at Fort Sumner, just west of Portales, NM a couple months later.

    Is it difficult to get to that spot? I know approximately where it is and I'm curious if there is the potential to get in trouble for wandering around there?

      The site is on private property and I had to get permission to see it. The people who own it are very nice though. The spot is kind of hard to see unless you know exactly where it is. It took me nearly 3 hours to find it lol

      @@twobikesandadrone It especially sucked because it was 97 degrees out! I was able to search and find contact info but I unfortunately can't give in out in this comment section as the owners might see it and get pissed with me. What I don't understand is what happened to the rest of the rock house ??

    • @tedbrogan1
      @tedbrogan1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard it was torn down at some point in the early 1900s due to no one using it anymore and the rocks were used to build something else

      @@tedbrogan1 No concern about history then, and Billy probably still had a lot of people who just would have considered him a common criminal in those days, and not the legend Hollywood and others made him into later.

    Dave Rudabaugh was involved in the shootout too, don't think Charlie was there though. The movie has a lot of errors. Charlie Sheen in the movie was shot in the gut but in reality Dick was shot in the eye. Buckshot was in a shed, not an outhouse and he didn't die during the shootout, he died the next day. Ironically he wasn't even there looking for any bounty, he was retired and trying to move out of State, he thought he was meeting the person he was selling his land to and had no idea the Regulators were even in town. They tried to arrest him first, Dick parlayed but Roberts thought it was a setup and they were going to murder him on the way to the jail. The Regulators were Deputies when the shootout took place.

    • @ll7868
      @ll7868 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also in the movie, Part 2, Dave Rudabaugh is called Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh, but in reality he was from Illinois and his nickname was Dirty Dave Rudabaugh. He died in Old Mexico after he killed a man who accused him of cheating at cards, he left the saloon and found that someone stole his horse and went back inside to be met by a hail of gunfire from the patrons. They cut off his head and paraded it around on a stick.

    • @ll7868
      @ll7868 ปีที่แล้ว

      And Dave was a late 40s-50ish greying, kinda overweight guy, not young and fit like Christian Slater.

    • @tedbrogan1
      @tedbrogan1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, Im well aware of how the real gunfight went. But Rudabaugh was not there. He did not join up with Billy until after the Lincoln County War was over. Roberts was in Doc Blazer's office when he shot and killed Dick. Charlie Bowdre was at the shootout. He was the one that put the fatal bullet in Robert's stomach

      @@tedbrogan1 Okay, I think I got Dave and Charlie mixed up. It's been a few years since I watched the documentary, but Dave was a much bigger part of the lore than Young Guns 2 makes him out to be. The real Doc Skurlock was a much bigger badass in real life too, took a bullet through the mouth and out his cheek without even blinking. He must have thought the guy missed and didn't register the pain long enough to to pull his gun and shoot the guy in the face, that's a tough as nails cowpoke right there.

    Thanks for sharing Sir. I always wondered where this was filmed at. On a side note, this is also where they had a filming blooper. The green camera tripod is clearly visible during a brief close up shot of Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen during the gunfight.

    Interesting video! Regarding the Kid & his gang at Stinking Springs, there is a story based on research by Dave Sederwall, a deputy sheriff in Lincoln County that the Kid buried some counterfeit money and a colt pistol while the gang was hiding in the stone hut! On of the gang members, Billy Wilson was in fact wanted for counterfeiting! Sederwall goes on to state that in 1910, a young boy was digging in the remains of the hut and found a rusted colt pistol! Some collector of wild west memorabilia now owns the pistol!
