BLACK VOCAL GROUP HARMONY (1946) This tune marks the recording debut of the Swan Silvertones. It is in the jubilee style, an approach that emphasized a good melody and a restrained, even blend of voices with a focus on precision rather than emotion. It is one of their most popular numbers. The sound you hear was taken directly from a monophonic vinyl source, "Spirituals" by Swan's Silvertone Si...

It’s in the jubilee gospel style, an approach that emphasized a good melody and a restrained, even blend of voices. Focus was on precision rather than emotion. By 1949, many quartets had begun moving toward a rawer, more expressive style. You can hear that in this version by the Nightengale Jubal...

BLACK VOCAL GROUP HARMONY (1949) This unique rhythmic, rhyming story record was first recorded by the Evangelist Singers in 1946. Otis Jackson was their lead singer as well as as the song's writer. The chorus, in case you can't understand, is "[Roosevelt] weren't no kin, Lord Almighty, but a poor man's friend!" BLACK VOCAL GROUP HARMONY (mid to late 1940s) The Four Knights got their start as the Southland Jubilee Singers with the Lang-Worth radio transcription service for which, between 1945 and 1950, they recorded both pop melodies and traditional Black gospel songs. Many of the pop tunes were reissued over the years but very few of the spirituals. This particular song is a standout, and I believe it...

BLACK VOCAL GROUP HARMONY (1950) This is a rare 78 rpm, and I never expected to own it. In fact, I never did. But toward the end of my collecting days, I got a friend who did have a copy to record it for me. He did a good job. Happy Feast Day of Saint Cecelia, Robert !
So good!!!
Great!
So beautiful
Enjoy...
As I've told you on Facebook, I did own this one. I only saw one copy during my collecting years and that was the one I owned. Now with the internet there are few songs that can't be heard somewhere.
You were incredibly fortunate. And we are ALL incredibly fortunate now to have so much -with the internet-at our fingertips
Robert - this is great and so appropriate in these troubling times. Beautiful harmony and lead vocal
@@cguzelli1 Glad you think so, Charles. A favorite of mine. And now…God save America.
@@cguzelli1 Interesting about Little Ax. He was a trans man. Willmer Broadnax
Jimmy Wright on sax..

Have it on purple Capitol.
Alas, I didn't renew my Adobe Photoshop subscription, so until I shell out the money I can only use the program in black and white...

This is the original master take! Unfortunately, when this song was legitimately reissued on CD an alternate take lacking the great finish by Willie was chosen in error. Willie himself loved this song.
I wonder if that alternate take is available on TH-cam. I couldn't find it...
What a treasure! Saint Cecilia...candles and novenas for my favourite saint.

Marvelous Song
Lovely, lilting melody, right?
Wonderful! 🤍
Soulful. Glad you enjoyed!
Fine indeed…
Thanks.
Group harmony as it’s supposed to be. The lead singer sings as the rest of them make music with their voices, perfect!
Glad you enjoyed. I just posted another cut by them from the album.
So Clarance A Smith is working that Axe and is the 3rd lead on this song with Bledsoe and Molone.wow.
@@xrigtrk The song is definitely a ‘wow.’
Nice!
Harold Winley, the bass, is still alive and sharp as can be -- well into his 90s. He commented on my posting of the flip side, saying he was looking forward to me posting this, the "A" side.
@@robertbowe7217 Goodness me! That's fantastic! Happy to hear that!
I think this is the first record by the Clovers.
You are absolutely right. Until you find an earlier one -- and let us know about it!

I first heard this on a Constellation LP.
