I'm not a quarter horse person at all. I show Morgan horses, so my style is very different from AQHA riders and horses. But with that being said, this horse is outstanding. He has impeccable balance in all gaits and clearly loves to do his job, which is what matters in all pleasure classes. The rider has her issues, but it isn't equitation. She actually carries her hands better than the hunter eq. riders do in saddlebreds and Arabians. They aren't low or resting on the horse. All breeds have their differences, which is what sets us all apart! I wish different breeds wouldn't be so harsh on each other. Lovely pair! I enjoyed watching their performance.

I'm puzzled as to why this is called a HUS class since these horses don't look suitable for over fences classes with such a low headset and never ridden on contact. I guess it's an AQHA thing. I'm used to showing arabians where our dress up your unsuitable for fences horse in huntseat gear is called hunter pleasure.

everyone saying her eq is bad obiously is uneducated on what hunter under saddle is... A class judging the horses movement and correctness, not the riders's. She is doing what she needs to to make the horse move the best possible way he can and posting higher helps the horse move correctly. If she didnt know what she was doing she wouldn't be in the top 10 at world.

Gorgeous horse... I cannot believe all the negative comments... if you did not beat her in the show that quit calling her faults... Kathryn... I dont know you but super ride... we all could use some improvements... BIG CONGRATS... I am sure you are so proud...

horrible equitation

Wonderful horse and bond between the rider, nice walk, form, and canter, but however, when you come to a trot, try to improve your leg form focus more on your right leg, your left seems better. Also try to take smaller rises in the rising trot (Posting trot), thrusting yourself in the air when rising, will mostly like end up with you sitting a little bit after when your meant to - causing you to bounce your leg. NIce work over all! Just work with your trot. :)

I show Arabs, and comparatively, these guys move like they're sad. I know they aren't but that's how it looks lol. Regardless, beautiful horse!

I don't know this girl and don't want to be too negative but this is a beautiful horse with a kinda good rider. The comment about the legs waving around is right on! Posting should be from the knee. Try riding without stirrups to get the right idea. This girl looks like she could pump water with the way her legs are waving. This should all be resolved before she hit the big show arenas. Unfortunately she or her Daddy has way too much money to throw at the trainer, the horse and the entry/stall fees. Sorry hon but I can find a better rider at a 4H show.....

Thanks for your comment. This video was actually taken back in 2011 (18 months ago) when Kathryn was just coming off a sports injury on her leg, which would explain what you are seeing. Although we don't have any 2012 World Show Video posted for HUS, (only Hunter Hack can be seen on our channel - where they placed 3rd), Kathryn and Floyd did place in the TOP FIVE at the 2012 AQHA World Show in their Hunter Under Saddle class..

Congrats on your hard work. HOWEVER, you really need to work on your right leg. It is flopping about at times and other times it is positioned too far back. Your left leg looked ok so I'm guessing you use it more or have more strength in it. Just work on that and you'll be good.

Don't quite understand your comment as this video is listed as HUNTER UNDER SADDLE and NOT Equitation. Obviously the equitation of the rider is a factor but the two classes are very different. This horse and rider were named 2012 AQHA CONGRESS CHAMPIONS in the NA Hunt Seat Equitation with over 100 entries shown and also were Top Ten in the Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation with 65 entries shown, different class and different way of riding.

This isn't equitation, this is under saddle, the focus is on the horse and a relaxed way of going.

Good luck with your hunter under saddle classes. Once you get the hang of it I'm sure you will really enjoy it!

We have actually owned him since he was a yearling so a lot of training has gone into him but there also has to be a lot of natural talent and a desire from the horse to do his job. How much of his movement is natural and how much is training?

It's funny I've gone from dressage and team riding to jumping then I am now to hunter under saddle. I'm starting out using a western saddle to get the idea of it since I have no idea what's going on but I am gettin the hang of it!

Hi Shelby, actually both his sire and dame earned their Quarter Horse papers so although he is officially a Quarter Horse both sides had a lot of Thoroughbred. If you mathematically calculate he has so much Thoroughbred in him! He is now doing the over fences and is LOVING it! We also own his full brother and are so excited about getting him ready to show - he is awesome!

in hunter under saddle or HUS as some people call it is a flat class for the working hunter horse. its strictly on the horses movement like western pleasure. only in a HUS horse you want a longer strided more elegant flowy trot, a nice moderate speed flowy canter and a horse that looks like it wan jump a fence. in quarter horses you want a level head set and slower gaits but in open shows you can get away with faster horse with a higher headset as long as they move good. have fun. :)

Hi Hannah, He actually has quite a bit of thoroughbred in his lines, hence his physical appearance, that being said, this video was taken almost 18 months ago - he has filled out and added another 400 lbs since then!

Thanks so much. He is 17.3 hands! He actually just made the finals earlier today in the Senior Hunter Hack and the Amateur Hunt Hack at the 2012 AQHA World Show. He also will be showing in the finals of the HUS and was already TOP TEN (7th place) in the Progressive Working Hunter at this year's World Show, and this is his first year showing over fences! We are VERY proud of him and are excited about his continuing success in the show pen.

Just thought you should know, obviously he DOESN"T carry his head like that when going over fences. Amazingly he is talented AND capable of doing both HUS classes & Over Fences! Hi Emily, Actually we spend most of our year on the road competing at various World Show level Quarter Horse Shows so don't have time for many open shows. We have started jumping him recently and he has won NUMEROUS Circuit Championships at some of the biggest shows in the US! He is qualified for the 2012 World Show in 4 over fences classes. After only a short time working in over fences he is currently jumping 5ft - (AQHA max jump requires around 3ft 3in) Hope this helps answer your question.
