I would like to add 2 points which in my point of view are neglected in Portugal (and I am a non-jewish Portuguese): 1. The Lisbon Fado emerged in the center of Lisbon exactly where the Jewish community used to live. The fado itself shows mozarabe traces and some Jewish traces too. 2. The fado is connected to the word Saudade. Some say it's of Latin origin while other say it's of Arabic origin. The interesting thing is that the meaning it has today is connected to the Portuguese navigation, to King Sebastian who was kille in Morocco leaving Portugal without king. This ended up in the Spanish ruled kingdom of portugal. But still the feeling connected with saudade and fado is very close to an Hebrew word: Ergah ערגה, which means yearning/longing/desire coupled with deep sadness. This is so much close to the Portuguese meaning that in my point of view both saudade and fado have a lot of sefardic influence
