Im Doing some research on oil pastels and your video is tremendously helpful. Thank you so much ❤
you are welcomed :)
That music on a loop is really annoying.... At least for me that have some sound sensibility... Had to stop the video... 😢😢
@@veystone2580 oh i am sorry for that. I will blend that out in the Update oil pastel Video
The awful smell of the Pentel was finally resolved. It was a HUGE batch that had that smell. Currently, if you buy from a big store, where they have new merchandise, the Pentels won't have that smell. But, buying from a small seller might be tricky if what they have available are still from that awful batch!
@@veystone2580 nice to know. Because I love my Pentel :) 😀
I am so glad about your honest opinion on Faber Castel oil sticks, I didn’t want to say anything bad about the product just because of the brand i love, but they are the worst oil sticks on the market, for the money they charge. I bought the smallest set just because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue this medium, and boy I am glad I didn’t buy the largest set!
They lowered the price significantly. I think for the current price it does not hurt much. But for third world countries still very expensive I guess. The cheap set of pentel is way more better. What a shame for such a good brand.
Awwwwww! Cute kitty🐱paws at 4:11 🥰. Thank you to you and your fur baby for sharing this review!
Caran D’ache will last a very long time compared to Sennelier because they are a firmer pastel stick but still soft. Same for the Mungyo.
Important to know….oil pastels need to stay in a cool place. If you buy them online during warm weather, it is very likely they will be melting by the time you get delivery…especially if Amazon or postal leaves them on doorstep! If they are warm when you receive them, put the box in refrigerator for a little while to allow them to get firm. I had a set of Paul Rubens delivered by Amazon that was so warm I had to return them..the individual wrappers were saturated with the pastel oils…a mess!
Thank you for your honest reviews!! You really helped!!
Thanks. What kind of your paper is?
You are welcomed. I use Claire Fontaine mix media paper
Love these ❤
I am having a hard time telling the difference between the Mungyo artist grade and student grade pastels. How can you tell?
The artist one has Gallery on their packaging. I hope that helps.
Great video. I am one of the few that prefers caran d’ache Neopastels over the Sennelier. I think it’s just my style that the less creamy pastels work better for me.
I am also team Caran Dache :)))
Trying to understand best way to sharpen these.
I just use my regular pencil sharpener for big pencil
A good alternative is sanded paper ^^
great informative video xx
Thanks 😀
Good helpful video and good comparison on hard vs soft oil pastel and tips. I just wonder if you have a set of Haiya Paul Ruben oil pastel, it’s very soft like Sennelier and softer than Mungyo. Hopefully, you can do a video about Haiya oil pastel? Thank you for the videos
Hi thanks for your Feedback :) . I have bought Haiya set recently. I am still testing them so I can give a honest review.
just an interesting fact I forgot to mention in the video: After almost 1 year the sticks got firmer and they feel less slippery and sticky, which I like.
Price
depends on where you live. In korea about 50 dollars. Please check the link in the discription box or comunity dash board, just updated links to buy since a lot of people are interested in this set
Beautifully done!
Thank you 😀
This is a very nice painting. I'm rather new to oil pastels. I enjoyed seeing the various techniques you used. Thank you!
Hi thank you :) I hope you will enjoy oil pastels in the future 😀
It is a year later from this excellent review. (Now Feb '24) Paul Ruben has released the Haiya line, which I am told is a Sennelier dupe. Any thoughts?
Thanks for your Feedback :) weil I think the old one is already similar to Sennelier or a dupe but the consistency is not the same for each stick in term of hardness, pigmentation etc. Its not the case with Sennelier. I think Paul Rubens had quality control issue in the past and it got better with haiya Line. Since I already have 3 Sets i am not really interested to get haiya set, just to get a little bit better quality. But If I was new to Paul Rubens I would have chosen haiya Line instead of old ones.
Good job
Thanks 😀
what do you think of shinhan watercolors? I bought this one in asia so they are not super pricy. I would not buy them outside asian countries now that I know about their consistency. They are good but so opaque for me, almost a mix of gouache and watercolors. Although Holbein is also made in asia but I like their consistency way more.
I have updated links to all products mentioned in the video. A lot of people ask me where to buy especially the Mungyo 120 colors set outside korea. Well good news if you live in Germany or in other areas around you can get it on amazon website now : amzn.to/3Si56HX.
Op…. Juste ces lettres m’on fait penser à Holbein
Mais les couleurs sont éclatantes!
Yes, the good pencils smell wonderful. Most Derwent pencils smell so good.
They do smell really good I agree. Maybe they should sell fragrance of it :))).
thank you so much! wonderful! i have a portrait set and love how buttery they are. I would love the whole set! May i ask, what are your thoughts on the mungo vs neopastels? are they very similar? I have heard they are but surely the neopastels are a lot better? thank you so much!
you are welcomed :) they are indeed very similar . It depends on your preferences. The mungyo one is cheaper, they are softer than Caran Dache, colors are very opaque because I feel like they just add white in very color a bit so thats why you will find Caran Dache is more satured and the colors pop more. In the Caran Dache set you will also have some transparent colors which are not included in the mungyo full set Mungyo has a wider range of colors though. I hope this helps a litte bit. If you like to know more you can check out my other videos. I made some on this topic :)
@@artholic9331 hank you so incredibly much ! it sounds like perhaps you prefer the mungo? What are your favourites may i ask? perhaps ranked 1 to 3 if that makes sense ?
@paigeme886 him is difficult because I normally use different sets for my painting. But among those 3 and if I had to choose one set only it would be Caran Dache because the colors are more vivid. And I like the perfect hardness. Sennelier is sometimes too soft and messy and mungyo are less vibrant than the other two but does not make me go broke. So I would say Caran Dache> Mungyo (has some unique colors)> Sennelier. For sketching I use my super cheap pentel set. And for painting which I want to last or sell maybe in the future : Mungyo for background, Caran Dache for the most part, Sennelier on top 😉
@@artholic9331 thank you so incredibly much! So helpful!
You will get 120+ colors in this full set. Only 120 are different. The primary colors are doubled the amount. And a transparent stick which I have not figured out what kind of purpose it serves. Please let me know in the comments if you do. All colors are vivid, buttery, highly pigmented. The metallics are the best I have used so far. A lot of transparent colors in comparison to other brands. You can make your own transparent colors with the vaseline-like stick. Totally worth the money but not necessary to get all of them since they are easy to mix and match based on their buttery consistency. But everyone loves convinient colors. What do you think you Sennelier as oil pastel brand. Do you enjoy them?
The transparent stick is a for blending and you can get very nice effects with it. I've even used it to glaze. I lay down a layer with harder oil pastels (or let a layer of softer oil pastels set over night) and to glaze a transparent layer over it I pot down a layer of the transparent stick, add a color of my choice and then blend it out with some more of the transparent medium. Sennelier has a lot of (semi) transparent colors in their range and because they lay down so smoothly, they are great for glazing over pretty much every brand of oil pastels.
@catnap6099 hey thank you so much for your description. I did try to blend in the video but I find blending with the transparent stick is very slippery and the blend did not look nice so I just gave up :))) I also think is for glazing but I have never seen someone does this before. I will definitely try again with your techniques. Sounds really interesting. Thanks a lot 🙏
The Fabers are appalling!
Don't get it. You'll waste your money
thats what i said lol@@artholic9331
Do you like Derwent lightfast less?
Yes because I just love the formulation so much and they are way cheaper than lightfast. Lightfast are my second favorite of the brand though.
@@artholic9331 thank you for your answer! I like "drawing" less because they have fragile lead. And I'm very upset about this.
@kinestet_art girl you have a 💪 grip. How did you break those super thick lead 😳. Well I don't have breakage issue with none of my pencil except faber castell black edition and prisma colors
@@artholic9331 😆I don't know! Maybe my cat played with them, before they were cracked🐈
Lightfast are my favorite!
I just bought some in the wooden box. LOVE them LOVE them LOVE them!!!
Good for you 👍. Yes they are the best watercolor pencils. I always find them too pretty to use 😄
Did you find any place online where you can buy the mungyo ones separately which ship to Europe? I am running out of white 😢
hi :) i have seen them on ebay uk. Costs about 3 dollar per stick though. But for that money you can also purchase Caran Dache white, which is actually better in my opinion.
@@artholic9331 tnx for the reply 🙏the carand’ache was indeed my second option 😊
I recomend Mont Marte oil pastels, very soft, well pigmented, 120 pcs set around 37 dollars
Thanks. I have heard of this brand before but I didn't know they offer such a big set. 😳...unfortunately this set is hard to get in Europe.
they're available now on amazon germany and suuuper affordable. Haven't bought them myself but am definitely considering it :)
They are awesome and really affordable. You should try. I got the 72 set and I am testing them. There will be a future oil pastel update video for sure.
I've actually just found that the Artecho are basically the same product and 10€ cheaper than the Mont Marte so I'll probably be trying those out. Looking forward to your new video! ❤️
@alessamiridis5476 please let me know your experience then. Because I bought some sets lately to compare but for me the Artecho is not as similar to the Mont Marte one . But it is just my opinion and it depends on how you use oil pastels normally as well.
Good review and I completely agree with your recommendation of Sennelier and Caran ‘Ache and then the Mungyo.
The Mungyo and Caran D’ache are my new favorite. If you want very soft pastels but on a budget, its worth saving up for a small set of Sennelier.
I like sennelier but Caran D'ache is still my number one. If Mungyo colors are little bit more vibrant I think I would choose Mungyo. I have the full set of Sennelier now but there are a lot of transparent colors in there. I prefer opaque colors more.
Well done on this video. This has to be one of the best ones on oil pastels I have seen. Very helpful. Subscribed and thank you 🙂
thank you for your kind words 🤗
Wonderful video! Thank you for creating it. It helps me a lot. 😊
Thanks 😊 I am glad that I could help 🤗
Neuer subscriber hier.
Congratulations
Thank you ❤️
Why isn't that FSE emblem printed on all of these pencils? I believe they are in the DickBlick set. I sure I hope I didn't get scammed.
I bought mine in europe/switzerland. Maybe different packaging.
I‘m also in Switzerland. Can you please inform me where I can buy Pentel 50 pieces (orange box) and Mungyo 120 pieces set?
The orange box you can find it on gaestecker and for the mungyo I have not found any store which ships to switzerland directly. I recommend you check out eBay/ali express. If you live near the border to germany, you can let it shipped there. Sometimes, it's cheaper.
Actrully the Paul Ruben and sennelier oil pastels are good for blending in paper but you need bettter paper , canvas rolls , canvas if you want to varnish them . Sennelier safflower or green thinner for oil paints are good for Paul Ruben’s oil pastels and sennelier oil pastels ., there more professional and masters 1:54 .
Thanks for the tip I will try the thinner out in the future. Normally I don't use oil or anything to blend I just use the sticks themselves or finger . Don't like the paper from Paul Rubens that much it's too smooth for my taste. And I just spray fixative over. Vanishing is too much work 😅. What kind of paper brand do you use?. Sennelier is more professional but not everyone can afford them so I chose something inexpensive for everyone can start with. But yes sennelier oil pastels are gorgeous 😍.
I have the Derwent drawing set too.
You like them too?. 😏 I think you have similar taste in art supplies like mine. Do you have holbein or posca/uni pencils?. I am considering the uni pencils since I have better access to them.
thank you for this review💖💖 (and for your kitty 😽😽)
Im glad you liked it and my cats also say thanks 😁
I love these pencils, they’re so creamy… and I LOVE the smell of Derwent pencils, you’re definitely not the only “weirdo” who does this 😂 PS. Hiiiii from new sub #260
Hi back :) your comment deserves a pin 🤗. Nice to know that others can relate. The smell surely adds up to the cost 🤣
❤🌿🌿🌿
I have neocolor 1 too. Really satisfied even it was a crayon set.
I wish they would produce a bigger set like neocolor 2 or 120 colors :))) find it a little bit wasteful to use neocolor 2 dry since they are more expensive.
my dreaaaaaaaaaaam, wish they were available in my country ToT
i like the cupboard version more too!
We all want them :))) Hope they are available in the future on amazon. Maybe you can get them though the eBay link I posted.
Thank you so much. I am a complete beginner and you have covered what I need to know and answered my questions- even the ones I didn’t know how to ask. I am ready to give it a go. ❤😂
thanks for your feed back :D. Have fun trying out oil pastels ^^
