    My name is Dennis Pettit, I filmed this video of Robert. Unfortunately Robert passed away last year. As it was during the Covid lockdown, I couldn't get to his funeral which was very sad as we had become good friends. He helped me out with fixing and making metal parts for some of my equipment and as a result he asked me to do the video. He sold all his machinery not long after we posted the video. He was a very clever and gentle man and it was a pleasure doing the video for him. We did it all in one shoot, unrehearsed. I can't answer any technical questions I'm sorry but he would have really appreciated the feedback we're getting and I'm sure it would have given him much pleasure in answering your questions. RIP Robert.

      This is a really interesting video of an "old school" technique. Very well explained. Really sad to read that Robert passed away. Your work, Dennis, will help conveying his knowledge. Thank you!

      Hey Dennis sorry to hear about Robert. He seems like a genuine guy. I’ve scoured all over the web looking for the info I found in this video and can’t thank you both enough for putting this together. Specifically the book he used with the list of gears needed is pure gold and I’ll be on the search for one.

    Thank you Robert, Can you do any more in depth video on setting up the gear train and etc. Also want to thank you for being one of the very few people that actually spoke on how it works and etc but I need more info. I have a universal dividing head (completely brand new and complete ) and i want to learn more about how to use it to its fullest so if you can find the time will you put out another video. Thank you.

      I wish dad could. Unfortunately he passed away a little over a year ago. The number of times I've gone to call him for advice is unreal. He was a great machinist.

    What are these fluted shafts used for?

    • @editedweb
      @editedweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are used in a seed box, for sewing grain. They sit at the bottom of the box and this seeds are transferred in the flutes. Dad used to make these brass ones, and also larger diameter, plastic ones, which I think were used for sunflowers and other larger seeds. I think the brass ones did wheat, barley, that kind of thing.

    What about the high low knob? Or use a cordless drill on the handle to reverse it

    could you make a key to fit over the handle with a shaft to fit in a cordless drill for rapid table operations?

    Thanks for this, i have a Victoria universal dividing head but without the gears and banjo, I've been wondering on how to connect it all so thanks a lot for showing how the banjo and gears work, seems I have a lot of spur gears to cut first :) , like most things I want to do.. I have to make something else first, problem is when the part I want to make is used to make the part I need to make it, if that makes sense! , Enjoy your retirement fella and thanks a lot for passing this information on. Mark.

      You will have fun making the gears, but you will need the index plates to get the correct angular spacing. The numbers of teeth are shown in the text and are common for all 40:1 dividing heads. You could use either metric module cutter or Diametral Pitch cutters, depending on what you can beg, buy borrow or steal.

      @@robertking3130 thanks, I think the first 1/4 of 2020 is going to dedicated to making or buying kit to cut gears, I need to make 30x 1.5 mod gears for 2 lathes, 8x 22DP gears for another lathe and while I'm at it I'll cut gears and make a banjo for the victoria dividing head also, somewhere In my house or shed I have a printed booklet for the dividing head showing all of the gear sizes and hole plates that were made for the Vic Div head, now of I can find that it would be a great help :/

      @@markhobster8113 Machinery's Handbook has a wealth of info on dividing heads. I reckon that index plates are similar for all brands though, bu t I hope you don' have to make those also. As far as cutters go yon can buy sets of Chinese cutters, but they are a bit ordinary and they are numbered differently to the standard. I used to buy individual cutter from Ebay, that way you got standard bores (1" or 1 1/4"). It is always a mystery to me why if you buy this sort of equipment second hand there is always something missing. You will also need to make the spindles to attach the gears to the gear plate or banjo.

      @@robertking3130 yeah a lot of good machinery and workshop equipment is inherited by the ignorant, the machinists children inherit.. don't know what it all is so sells it on in batches, I have bought various older machines over the past 3-4 years for my own use and every one of them came with bits from other machinery, oh disorganized hobbyists aswel :) , sell equipment on after losing some stuff, workshop moves ect, it's part of the fun refurbing older equipment to make parts for them as long as we know what those parts looked like and how they fitted, shape and size of a missing change gear banjo for my 1912 Drummond 5" doublebed lathe was a bit of a nightmare, I finally found out through a lot of questions and picture requests

    • @robertking3130
      @robertking3130 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Best of luck finding a plate. It should not be too difficult to make one; my original one was made of cast iron, but a piece of twenty millimetre plate would be fine. Use a bit of guessometry from the end shot of the gear train to get your proportions to mill the slots. If you need to make gears, work out whether they are D.P. system or Module and you could probably get a cutter that could cut both smaller and larger numbers of teeth. Being adjustable centres will allow them to mesh even if they are not the correct profile. It is not a Swiss watch fit. Since making the vid I have sold my workshop.
