University of Wolverhampton Lecture Dr R M Francis (Poet and Author)
The lecture is delivered by Dr Rob Francis who is an author and poet. In this lecture, Dr R.M. Francis will discuss how we read and write texts that are enabled by the earth sciences.
In a time of fraught ecological and climate debates, when culture, community and communication lean further and further into digital landscapes, new models of meaning-making are required. Geo-poetics offers an active interdisciplinarity that bridges the infamous gulfs between the scientific and poetic frameworks, allowing it to better investigate the hyper-object of climate change and to reconfigure truth-seeking apparatus. It seeks to re-establish the connections of human and more than human and re-ground the self in “earthness”, developing what Kenneth White called “Topological Presence”. In doing so, we revitalise the important deep time connections between being and landscape - escaping the spectral traps of online life.
In this hybrid lecture-poetry reading, Dr R. M. Francis will discuss how we read and write texts that are enabled by the earth sciences, how we reconfigure our sense of place in-light of deep-time, geological and ecological concerns, and contemplate the mental and physical health benefits of geo-poetic wayfinding.
In exploring the yogic and shamanic in this method, Francis tracks his poetics during his time as Poet in Residence for the Black Country Geological Society, producing his film poem and book, The Chain Coral Chorus (Playdead Press, March 2023): using pilgrimage, wayfinding and the Earth Sciences to get to the bedrock of place-identity.

Happy New Year Debra and Ben. Excellent vlog, particularly when you talked about the importance of rest. Sadly there are still too many corners of academia where working a ridiculous amount of hours is expected. Thankfully from what I gather, the culture is slowly changing. Maybe working a normal amount of hours will soon become the norm! Yes, it should be hard but a PhD should also be fun!

Thank you! That’s really clear. Perhaps the APR’s could be used as a ‘rehearsal’ for VIva’s for students? So they get the same tech guidelines as if it was a viva?

    • @DoctoralCollegeDebs

We do suggest that the chair and the student carry out a technical check the software with the technology being used. However, APR is a good way of getting used to using online platforms for a verbal defense.

Thank you for this vlog. Just a question about references: What if you read a book or article that in the background has informed your knowledge and you put it in your reference list but not cite it per se in your thesis? Should I remove it or acknowledge it in the list?
