In semifinal action at the Washington Regional, powerhouse Loogootee, coached by legend Jack Butcher, face Crawford County in the famed Hatchet House.

The 21-6 Blue Blazers of Elkhart take on the 21-6 Trojans of New Castle, led by future Indiana Hoosier Hall of Famer Kent Benson.

The semifinal game between South Bend Adams and Anderson, a 99-95 upset win for Adams, established the single-class record for most combined points in a semifinal game. Jim Webb and Steve Austin had 31 points apiece in the shootout, and Anderson's Roy Taylor and Tony Marshall added 27 and 22 points, respectively.

Foolish Pleasure made a hard charge down the stretch and held off Avatar, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, to capture the 101st Kentucky Derby. Diabolo finished third in the race.

Cannonade prevailed by 21/4 lengths over Hudson County in the largest Kentucky Derby field ever with 23 starters. Princess Margaret of Britain’s Royal family was among the then-record 163,628 in attendance for the centennial running, Jockey Angel Cordero captured his first of three Derbies thanks to a masterful job getting Cannonade through traffic to take the lead rounding out of the far turn.

Secretariat, arguably the greatest race horse ever, begins his quest to become the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Although he broke last out of the gate, "Big Red" came back to run the fastest Derby in history, with a winning time of 1:​59 2⁄5 and last quarter mile in 23 seconds were both records for the Derby. Sham placed second on the day, and Our Native was third.

In a warmup of the following year, jockey Ron Turcotte and trainer Lucien Laurin team together with winning horse Riva Ridge to capture the 98th Kentucky Derby. No Le Hace placed second and Hold Your Peace came in third. Laurin and Turcotte would return the following May in Louisville with Riva Ridge's stablemate, Secretariat to make history.

Canonero II ran a modest 2:03.20, but was certainly strong enough to hold off runner up Jim French and third place finisher Bold Reason to claim the 97th Kentucky Derby.

Dust Commander runs away from the field and claims the 96th Run for the Roses as jockey Mike Manganello his only derby championship ride. My Dad George finished second and High Echelon came in third.
