Air Force ROTC Reveille/Retreat Procedures - Det 025, ASU
This is an instructional video on Reveille and Retreat, courtesy of Arizona State University's Air Force ROTC Detachment 025: The Flying Devils.
Reveille (0:16) is done at 0800 in the morning on Monday-Friday.
Retreat (2:21) is done at 1600 in the afternoon on Monday-Thursday, but 1200 on Fridays.
The goal is to signal the beginning and end of the official duty day. It is done by a 3-person detail, ideally led by an FTP and accompanied by 2 IMT. All procedures should be done smoothly and respectfully. The most important thing is that everyone in the detail is synchronized.
At (1:28), it should be noted that the detail commander only drops their salute once the flag fully reaches the top. It is not shown because the camera pans upward, and the narration makes it seem like he calls "order, arms" before the flag reaches the top. ONLY order arms once the flag reaches the top.
Any cadet in uniform who walks past the area will stop and stand at attention until the detail falls out. They will salute as the detail commander does, which is while the flags are being raised, and while they are being lowered. Civilians or cadets out of uniform will place their hand on their heart. It can get crowded in the flagpole area on busy days, so please be respectful towards fellow students who walk by, even if they accidentally walk through the detail's path. Cadets have the option to re-fold the flags inside the det lounge if needed. Don't be afraid to do this if you are not happy with how the folding was done.
Half staff is done under special approved circumstances, and the details of execution are as follows:
Half Staff Reveille: The flag is raised like normal, but before the rope is secured, the flag will slowly be lowered to half the pole's length. NEVER raise the flag straight to half staff, always hoist to the top first.
Half Staff Retreat: The flag, already at half staff, will be raised to the top quickly, then lowered slowly to be retrieved and folded. NEVER lower the flag straight from half staff, always hoist to the top first.
Any additional questions can be answered by the Det025 Training Manual on the det's website, through the cadet login (afrotc.asu.edu/content/cadet-link-home) at the 6th bullet down under "Quick Links." Reveille and Retreat (section IV) begins on page 12.
Please excuse the glare frequently seen on camera, the sun was quite bright today!
