How fondly I remember the late 70's at Comiskey Park, when Jimmy Piersall was hired as color announcer to compliment Harry Caray. The White Sox team (in Bill Veeck's final years of ownership) was pretty rag-tag, not helped by their ridiculous, pajama-style uniforms, designed by Mary Frances Veeck (Mrs. Bill...so no player complaints were allowed). It was under these circumstances that Caray and Piersall created a sensation as a broadcasting team; their collective knowledge and insight (Piersall especially) being superseded only by their sophomoric, outrageous humor. The atmosphere at the games was electric..due much more to Caray and Piersall than to the team on the field. When criticizing players or managerial decisions, Piersall would often say: "He's crazy.....but so am I, and I've got the papers to prove it!" But he really knew the game, and never failed to enlighten the fans with his observations and experience. (Ps: when Caray went to the Cubs and became super-popular in town, he was a pale shadow of himself in comparison to his years with the White Sox, where he was a major part of the Veeck-era goofiness).
Thanks Larry!
I'm glad your on the road to recovery

great video, the banks card is my 2d fav card of this set behind hank, and was excited to pick up a lower grade copy this summer. The 59 set has always intrigued me ever since I first saw them when I started collecting in the early 80s. I only have a few cards from the set, and probably will never be able to afford to complete it, but I’m going to at least try to add some more of the Hall of Famer‘s from it. Looking forward to your next one in the series, and glad that I have a lot of prior videos to catch up on as I only found the series recently and gave a sub.

Jake, Thanks again for posting my photo; it's good to have it available to the world via your site, instead of just hanging on my wall at home. Like the Aparicio pic, the date was Saturday, September 19th, 1959; the Sox lost to Detroit that day, but would clinch the pennant the following Tuesday, Sept 22nd, in Cleveland. My dad liked Torgeson, since he was something of an underdog, a solid player whose career was on the decline by 1959, but who had a tough, blue-collar persona that we appreciated. He reminded us of our favorite uncle, my Dad's brother Bob, and I distinctly remember that my dad asked for him to come out and join us for the photo. Earl was probably flattered, since he had been replaced at first base a few weeks earlier, when the Sox acquired Ted Kluszewski for his much-needed power hitting in the final weeks of the season. What's interesting is that Torgeson..in this very clear, sharp picture, looks MUCH younger than he does in any other picture of the day (even the photo on his card). Maybe it was the horn-rimmed glasses. Bob Shaw is also seen "as he really looked" in this photo, his gentle facial features somewhat at odds with his powerful pitching. That's me on the left (front), looking rather dazed and confused. My dad is holding his great old Argus camera (I think we still have it somewhere), with which he took a few other photos of the park and the players that day. Larry R
@@HassoBenSoba Thanks so much Larry!
I remember how excited my dad was when Sievers was acquired by the White Sox in 1960. I just was reading how Bill Veeck had worked with Sievers..literally WORKED with him on the field in St Louis to help resolve Sievers' shoulder problem; he arranged for shoulder surgery for Sievers at Johns Hopkins. So now in '60, Veeck (in Chicago) was able to get Sievers from the Senators, and it was a big deal for us all. Problem was, the Sox had made that late-season deal in '59 to acquire Ted Kluszewski for their pennant run....so they now he had TWO home-run slugging first basemen. Sievers ultimately got the job when Big Klu went into a slump. Kluszewski was now a pinch-hitter, in which role he hit his historic, ill-fated "Home Run that Didn't Count" in Baltimore in late August of '60, when the Sox seemed poised to take over the AL lead (my family and I were grouped around the radio that afternoon, praying that Klu would hit one out of the park, which he did......until it was cancelled by the 3rd-base umpire). After that, the demoralized Sox tanked (as did we).
@@HassoBenSoba Thanks Larry for this outstanding context.
Fun rip bud 👍 Have a good week!
@@cloudsey420sufccards Thanks!
If Harold Baines can get in the hall, Dave Parker should too. In saying that, I actually do believe Baines is worthy to be a hall of famer with how consistently good he was in his late 30’s and 40’s. I highly value hitters who continue to hit good in there later years. As for the starter for game 7, I agree with Maddux, the profesor. He’ll never get blown up. Worst case scenario, he allows 2-3 runs.
Great take on Baines.
Two questions: Who would you pick to start a Game 7 among Clemens, R. Johnson, Maddux or P. Martinez? And, does Dave Parker belong in the Hall of Fame? Let me know in the comments!
Tough question but i go with randy in game 7.
Hard to say no to that.

In '59, my brother Mike and I, although totally devoted to the "Go-Go White Sox", each decided to "adopt" a National League team as our "alternate" favorite team (who knows why?), which we chose by using the Topps cards. Mike chose the SF Giants, I chose the RedLegs (and our dad got us each a cap for these teams). I remember a Saturday when I had stayed overnight at my Grandmother's, and the kid next door traded me the JOHNNY TEMPLE card (#335). When my dad and brother came to pick me up, I couldn't wait to show the card to Mike, since Temple looked like a genuinely nice guy. I also remember seeing him in the All Star game that summer on TV, a real thrill. In '77 I remember hearing about his unfortunate downfall. And the other guys in this episode: Hobbie ends up making roller skates, Loes drives a cab and works a lunch-counter, Crowe retires to a log cabin.....there's so many personal stories and history here, it's unbelievable. Best Wishes to Elroy Face, if he's watching... LR
