An obscure recording from ca. 1953-1955. Though it can't be proven definitively, John Coltrane is strongly believed to be the tenor saxophonist. For details see The John Coltrane Reference, pages 63, 79, 80, 82, and 403-404. Not to be mean or critical but.... John's far out, abstract & magical playing seems MUSICAL, to me, wheras, Eric's playing seems like very skillful SOUND EFFECTS...like in cartoons! It's all good & creative, so bless them for their sincerity & devotion...they were true ARTISTS in that era! ❤

So cool to hear Hodges and Coltrane playing together. Their respective styles are so different and unique from each other, and I’ve often thought of them as “one of the other” so this is just tickling me pink. Very nice

This is the Olympics of Music. Every time they played, from about '63 onward, they played like they'd been training and competing their entire lives for this one moment. One doesn't fully appreciate this until one has worked, trained, pursued something or taken great pains to build or create something, over the course of YEARS. The more I listen the more Inspired and Astonished I am.

I heard Trane a number of times at Half Note and maybe this night. The band played on top of the bar where a stage was erected. I remember one night, I was at the bar and Trane is going at it, the owners were shouting at their buddies at the bar cause Trane and Elvin were so loud. Years later I came across similar scene at Punk Rock gigs. Trane was and always will be Ahead Of His Time!

Hey! I'm curious to know if it might be possible to snag the bootleg of the improved audio/original tape from this set that you've mentioned-found a recent higher-quality upload of 'I Want to Talk About You' from this date; makes a significant difference in the listening experience. It would be incredibly appreciated, if so!

The Laserlight disc/download 'Live at the Half Note' in mono sound and pictured in this video is an abomination. Even sites like 'Hi Res Audio' and 'Pro Studio Masters' carry it and the audio is terrible! Releasing it in FLAC and charging money for it is a crime. Save your cash and search for the stereo version online

People still like to hear it for the historical significance. Every live Coltrane recording will have something interesting That die hard fans will want to hear. But yeah they should have a "buyer beware" warning so you know what to expect. That's what the Grateful Dead did on some of their live releases that were sonically imperfect.
