Minwax True Black Stain Review
มุมมอง 63K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Testing out Minwax True Black stain on a dining room table. The stain performed very well when using an old t-shirt to apply the stain onto the table top. The stain did not perform as well as my other stains when using a brush to apply the stain. The darkness of the color was surprisingly very dark. I watched a handful of videos on this stain and did not think that it would have performed this ...

Do I have to wear gloves to cut up my t-shirt?
did you wipe the stain off after a few minutes?
That is the brightest red I've ever seen. I like the brush on the best. U can c the wood fiber better.
To make it even darker/blacker, you can stain first with a dark blue, then use the black over that. Blue brings out even more black for some reason.
Did you pre stain?
No I didnt
Use pre stains u idiot
Huge thanks man, I wanted an honest review and you gave me exactly that. I think I’ll be using this true black to stain my shop. +1 follower! 🎉 have a great day!
Hey i dont know much about staining furniture but is the clear coat actually essential to the project or can i go without using it?
You can get away with not using it on pieces that wont be touched. I recommend using it on all pieces for durability. You’ll need to use it for any high traffic pieces for sure though.
Hey, thanks for this video!! You know if this can work similarly with ash wood? Also, can I apply a tung oil on top of it?
I’ve never tried it personally but i can’t imagine that it wouldn’t work for ash.
It would have been nice to see how you completely transformed the table, not just apply a stain.
Hey Graham, I have another video of how I refinished a different table. Its the same process but with a different stain. My wife and I refinished over 300 dining tables that year with this same process. Here is a link to the video: th-cam.com/video/KgCEa1i0C9g/w-d-xo.html
I think the conditioner side is a lot better than the side without it
Why so
What the hell are you talking about I’ve been painting for like 27 years and staining sucks there’s no way you can deny that
Finishing is a very delicate process and not very fun but staining is great in my opinion. Very simply to apply and difficult to mess up.
Is it solid or semi transparent stain?
You can see the wood grain through the stain if that is what you are asking.
@@BMVLifestyle thanks for the response but the can should say solid or semi transparent.
This is exactly what I’m looking for a testing video. Thank you so so much!
How did you make it look shinny at the end ?
Added a clear coat
I’m looking to refurbish a vintage maple table and the client wants a dark ebonized look. How do you think this would look on maple?
This would do great as long as you remove all of the old varnish first.
@@BMVLifestyle thank you, how is best to remove the varnish. I was going to sand it. Any thoughts would be most appreciated. I’ve not done much with maple to date.
@@sm3296 i prefer sanding. Make sure to wear a mask!
@@BMVLifestyle thanks so much, I sure will. 😊 😷
I want to repaint my wooden chair from golden to black. Could you please give me some advices if I can use this product to paint them? Thanks a lot.
I wouldnt use this unless you are prepared to sand off all of the old paint. If you sand off the clear coat thats on your chair you could then repaint it black and use a water based sealer once its dried.
what makes it look glossy?
The photo at the end has a polyurethane clear coat on it. Any sheen you may see in the process of staining was probably just the lighting.
Nice
Helpful. 👍
Did you apply a prestain?
No, I haven't needed it for this black stain.
Thank you 😊
It would help if you recorded this with a camera from this decade.
It helps when you aren’t a dick in the comment section too
Yeah, Ive been saving for a new camera.
Hi! I have a lot of DIY cheeseboards and would like to stain a few of them in black. do you recommend using this Minwax True Black? or would you recommend something else?
Hey Andrea, sorry for the late response. I am not familiar with staining food equipment. I would recommend doing some research. Probably need to use an oil that is food safe.
I'm thinking of using this on a bed frame made of tulip poplar... Do you think it would come out pretty black or closer to a dark brown?
Ive use this on poplar and it was pure black. Try to stain it in a well ventilated area and let it aerate for a day before confining it in an enclosed space if possible.
Did you also stain the chairs or are they painted?
The chairs were painted with a graaco spray gun.
BMVLifestyle thank you!
Is the wood polished?
No
Do u have to sand it 1st?
Yes if you are staining.
I tried the true black on dark walnut and hard maple. I ended up with a dark rich colored brown on both. After applying the stain the way I always do I decided to really lay it on thick. Waited 10 minutes to wipe it off with no change in color. I had high hopes after watching your video. You were able to achieve a painted look with stain which is amazing and what I was really hoping for. I would have been satisfied with the color black even if a little grain showed but no luck.
nascar6829 Fergie wow thats surprising. I have used this on a lot of tables, my current kitchen table is a round oak table and it came out pitch black with wood grain. Sorry for your luck.
Your comment might help other people who are thinking about using this on those types of wood though. You would probably need to try a black dye for those woods. I’ve seen tutorials on this but i have never tried it.
Sounds like the wood still absorbed too much stain. I'm guessing oil-based? Maybe condition it (prestain) to prevent so much absorbion.
I'm on 2 coats and it's still only a dark brown.
@@analaurahemsworth2578 ?
Any wood conditioner?
No I never use wood conditioner on darker stains. I've noticed issues when not using conditioner with lighter stains though.
Hey! thank you for the review. What type of wood is this table?
Im pretty sure that it was white oak. My wife and I just did another table with this stain and it is really nice after 2 coats.
I'm using this on my stair treads. The black is a little too thick, so I want to thin it out with mineral spirits and see how that looks #firsttimestainer
Hey Tyler, how did it do when you thinned it? I've never tried that.
@@BMVLifestyle It actually looks really nice! I'm not familiar with the terms of wood, but the part of the grain thats part of the tree ring turned a dark golden color after finishing it, while the rest was a dark black. It looks great with white painted risers.
@@tylermcgill2741 thats awesome. I suppose the knot or rings must have absorbed more of the mineral spirits. I stained a planter box black with this and the knots on that wood turned black.
Hi. I make plaques that sometimes look better sitting on a darker wooden easel. It seems the steps in your video would work to darken them. Am I right in my thinking? If not, please tell me what you would recommend. Thank you.
Im sure it would look great. Try it out and let me know how it looks!
