Columbo, Romania and the Communist Party
In 1974 the Romanian Communist Party contacted Peter Falk, known for the titular role in Columbo, to ask him to record a message promoting the series, which was so popular in Romania there were fears that people would take to the streets if it was taken off the air. A bizarre story, pieced together and complemented by a lost-and-found interview with Peter Falk on the subject.
CLARIFICATION: At the time of writing there was no easily available online archive of David Letterman’s talkshow. In the last year, the official Letterman TH-cam channel has started uploading clips from the show, but the Peter Falk interview has not been uploaded.

Columbo: Intrigue Without Mystery

Columbo is a wonderful and unique show that often gets overshadowed by Peter Falk’s titular Lieutenant. I talk about some of the things that made Columbo compelling, beyond the character, such as the inverted detective story, duels with the murderers, the dour tone of the endings and more. So if you like Columbo or detective shows, grab some chilli, feed the dog, get the wife, and settle in as ...

Thank you so much for citing your sources because right after i went to read the case of oscar brodski and the acompanying essay. What a fun and interesting read!
My favorite is the camera scene with Dick VanDyck
anyone who hasnt seen Falk in Under The Influence watch it Fantssticly touching movie he did with his friend John Casavates directing❤
This series every episode is watching a battle of whits and one side is unarmed
This is a fantastic, insightful breakdown of the magic of Columbo and has helped me contextualise my appreciation of other detective shows. Subscribed and will be back to watch it again!
"nicolae ceausescu this court finds you guilty and sentences you to the Columbia Dimension"
Awesome video!
I just love how consistent it is that it really doesn't matter how your conversation with columbo goes, if he starts to walk out the door, and then turns around and says, "oh, one more thing", at that point you're just cooked. He's about to hit you with the game over and there is nothing you can do about it.
well i though it was funny that he chose a clip from one of the 'who done it' episodes. 🙂
Omg this series is pure inspiration fuel
It's wild to me that they made essentially 40+ movies.
Hate to admit I was only 7 years old when this show premiered, but I've always liked it 😅😀
Another really good thing about Columbo is a lot of the villains in the show were played by people who always fit more of a heroic style. People like Dick van Dyke, Johnny Cash, William Shatner, all of them are known for being good people or playing heroic characters. So having it flipped on its head where they're the villains threw people off quite a bit.
Incredible History Beautiful work Now this is Real Romanian History
Peter Falk’s career obsession with Columbo is explained in one simple lesson I learned long ago When Samual L Jackson star’s in a movie He isn’t playing that character He’s playing Samual L Jackson Then that character For Peter it’s a bit more the opposite but the point is there He is Columbo; Columbo is Him He’s playing Himself He’s more into it than many other actors Not Leonardo DiCaprio nor Brad Pitt playing Themselves with different clothes in a different Context He is Columbo He is the show Columbo is Him
Immaculate Comfort Incredible Art Columbo is so Adorable His entire character is seemingly just underwhelming or unremarkable Something His opposition lack After watching Columbo obliterate Light Yagami in a 14 Minute skit I gotta say; He’s the better detective
A western set in the east… “Just one more thing. This Magnificent 7 film seems to share alot of similarities with Akira Kurosawa’s classic masterpiece, Seven Samurai. Would you know anything about that, Mr. John Sturges?”
This video is so good! Definitely one of my favorite Columbo video essays!!
At 5:10 a rendition of the Tahiti Trot by Dimitri Shostakovsky starts playing. It's missing from the "Music" section in the description. It also could be some version of "Tea for two" I always mix these songs up.
Columbo is the greatest detective. Show is awesome all the little details he uses makes it amazing.
Literally my favourite show/detective ❤
Columbo used the music from Charade?
I would love to see the stats on how many (or how few) of his cases ended in convictions, his evidence was so often wafer thin.
I like the show on the intellectual level, you would watch a person commit what look like the perfect crime, and you would wonder how they would ever get caught...
I would love to see more of these stories and to be fair Pokerface gets us pretty darn close 🙏🏼
Now I just want a Columbo, monk, and psych crossover
Very good review. Columbo was a magical show. A perfect combination of writing, acting, atmosphere. It was truly a show of its time. And uh... oh. Nice profile picture. My niece studies art in college. She keeps showing me these new art pictures. I don't get them at all you know. I leave that to her, I try to appreciate it though, must have been a lot of work going on into there. Where was I again? Ah yes, so the show required and perfectly wirtten main character and a perfect actor for it. Can't forget that. Oh and one more thing. The wife.
Oh wow, William Shatner showing his acting range about 8 minutes in. It took me a moment to recognize him. Columbo is also a show where you love rooting for Columbo to catch the killers, and finding out where the holes in the cover stories and alibis are is the best part. :)
While the episodes were enjoyable, one of the best moments was when a character (NOT a murderer) told Columbo "you have an obtuse manner that many may find charming . . . I do not." Columbo was brilliant but also an absolute jerk, disrupting funerals, film sets, dinners, sound sets all to affirm his role as some kind of idiot savant who had no social grace at all but should be forgiven because of his skill as a detective. Some of the best moments were when he got set straight with a verbal reprimand for his frequent inexcusable behavior.
I never could stand Columbo. The same schtick every time.
I wonder if anyone else besides me compares Columbo to inspector Goole
Brilliant vid! I love Columbo. You've done him justice here. 😁 👍
The John Cassavetes lookalike club.
Oh one more thing! Best cop EVER. Here in Liverpool UK, Sunday afternoon I cook my roast beef and Yorkshire pudding with all the trimmings whilst watching Columbo, best day of the week.
I remember watching reruns of Bonanza with my grandpa and Columbo with my grandma. Thank you for reminding me of these fond memories. It’s brought me so much joy and nostalgia watching it again.
Columbo is possibly the greatest prime time show ever made.
I love Columbo. It’s perfection. Many of his suspects actually feel relieved the moment the game is finally up. Wish someone would create new stories - they’d have to be period set as forensics would ruin the fun
Columbo genre is not called whodunnit. Off to a good start I see. Didnt bother listening any further.
Columbo could catch Light Yagami.
Ah heedly
Can't believe that you overlooked mentioning William Shatner as one of the more memorable Columbo villains.
Also, having watched most of the episodes, I can say that some the resolutions didn't actually work. Like the episode with Robert Conrad. Columbo didn't actually prove that the fitness mogul actually killed his employee. The final scene only showed that it was possible to have faked the phone call that served as the alibi, not that it had actually happened. The fitness mogul himself didn't admit guilt, and I suspect could have had the case dismissed in court. Another case that stood out to me was where video evidence was used to create the alibi for the killer, but Columbo was able to use some magical magnification of the video image to spot the envelope of a party invitation in the corner of the room to disprove the alibi, with no consideration to image resolution.
He did mention that name
Love the perp walk compilation in the beginning ❤
Patrick Mcgoohan was the best villain actor and director.
I've been plugging through the old Columbo series. It's currently on Prime. Just great TV!
I think a part of the shows longevity might be due to its rewatchability owing to it not being dependant on the "who dunnit" aspect of other detective shows. It's just fun to see Columbo piece it together and interact with the killer.
Columbo was one of my fictional crushes as a teen. He’s so charming and endearing as a character. You can’t help but love him. I still would die happy to have husband who hypes me up to everyone 24/7 the way he does his wife. His home life is my favorite part of the show. The little life him, his wife and the Basset hound have is like a puzzle you get to piece together episode by episode.
Does Columbo ever let anyone go?
The only detective series where I was praying for the bad guys to get away with it - just once.
Super
69 episodes ... nice!
