    I went from gr10 math to first year calculus at Waterloo University in 14 months. I took 8 courses in Calculus in the engineering program (Differential Calculus, integral calculus, first and second degree ordinary and partial differential equations etc). Years later, I would actually have nightmares about being called by the University telling me I failed 4th year Calculus and had to repeat….but I was married with kids!! After all this, I never REALLY UNDERSTOOD Calculus until I taught it in High School. Sir Isaac Newton, RIP 🐐

    Here is a more realistic approach 1) Do not take calculus unless your arithmetic, algebra, and precalculus is razor sharp. 2) You will need to know how to use a scientific graphic calculator also. However be prepared to take an exam without a calculator and putting your final answer in reduce exact form. No decimal approximation. 3) The average full time college student doesn’t have the luxury of spending too much time on one subject. Spending too much time trying to learn basic fundamentals that has nothing to do with calculus will cause you fall behind in other classes. Resulting in a low GPA. Sometime even repeating the class for a better grade. This is why #1 and #2 is important. 4) As a college student declaring a major, it’s important to know your strengths, and weaknesses before stepping foot into a classroom. Otherwise you will be throwing away a lot of money, that you will have to pay back. Hard work doesn’t always pay off if your fundamentals is shot. 5) Finally, once you are taking calculus because #1, #2,#3, and #4 is satisfied, be prepared to teach yourself because, most professors focus on proofs and graphs. Leaving the student confused on what’s important. 6) Don’t have a lot going on in your life. College is very unforgiving about your personal life. Calculus is your first advance math class and requires a lot of time commitment and will be a prerequisite for other classes. 7) Good Luck My grades Cal 1 = A Cal 2 = A Cal 3 = B+ Differential equations = A

    I’m 71 and still working as a mechanical engineer. I have 25+ US and foreign patents. I’ve made millions of dollars on electromechanical inventions, and employment, etc. Not once in my 50 year career have I needed to perform calculus on any project. The practical side of engineering is that all the engineering data you need has been long developed by weirdos who love math for what it is. But, you still need to pass the Calculus courses in college to get the degree. In my opinion, engineering education should be more geared toward practical engineering. I’ve worked with MIT and other mechanical engineers who know calculus, but don’t know nuts and bolts and other practical things.

    Most of Calculus was a total waste of time. Integration by Parts. Integration by Partial Fractions. Etc. The basics are all I ever found useful… derivative being the instantaneous slope of a curve and integral being the area under a curve are vital. But all the ridiculous methods to solve specific equations which you can just look up. I’ve been an engineer for 30+ years. They could slim down calculus from two quarters to about 4 weeks. Unless you are going to be a physicist or mathematician, the rest is a waste of time.

    As a former university student and employee of the most notorious jet engine manufacturer in the world (guess and you’re probably right), the summary is that calculus is a scam. Yes-how sad how much effort goes into finding objectively inaccurate values with theoretical explanations in this so “enlightened” study. Ha! No wonder why Nasa or Tesla never made it to the moon. 🌈 The whole intellectualist narrative of modern mathematics has proven to be nothing but speculation and guesswork, almost all of which never created the Golden Gate, Statue of Liberty, Twin Towers, Boeing 747 or _anything_ relevant in the modern engineering world. Thank the Lord Jesus Christ that I am now wealthy and successful _without_ having this kind of conflated ego, wild assumptions and epistemologically baseless philosophy. Instead put your faith in the resurrection of Christ, and not the arrogant speculative works of eloquent dead men. ❤

      @ Hi Sir, if you have an option to take calculus and you are relatively confident in your current pre-study, absolutely take calculus for the credit. Otherwise, any mathematics beyond basic algebra and geometry is not required for most technical positions including the majority of engineering positions, including the majority of _computer_ engineering positions. There are some extreme exceptions to this, but these post-graduate classes and requirements can be taken _after_ decades of employment in the field-and not having these future requirements will not hinder your ability in the meantime for your professional advancement and development. That was my fancy explanation of-fear God and keep His commandments. I have seen young men with limited or no experience, fearing the Lord, advance to the highest realms of Creation and highly coveted engineering leadership positions; I have also seen older men with multiple engineering degrees who, not fearing the Lord, settle as warehouse boxers and maintenance technicians. The key to your success Sir is fearing God, allowing Christ authority over your life, and waiting humbly for the Lord to lift you up. I was something until I became nothing, to become something Greater. Yes, I am praying for you Sir to understand these wise words while you are still young and vulnerable to the Truth. Reach out anytime Sir, and God be with you. Best, Robert MyGiftMatters.org ❤️

    As far as IF you choose ".99..." to represent 1, then it is not a good choice. Basics in decimal based representation of real numbers, ".99..." looks like a real number. Real number integers in decimal based representation should have no non-zero digits to the right of the decimal point. Rational numbers are the ratio of 2 integers. Then ".99..."/".99..."=".99..." a rational number? What about the sum of a infinite geometric series?? The sum of any infinite series with all terms >0 is questionable and is only defined by a limit. The sum of any 2 numbers >0 is > either of the 2 numbers. A infinite series of >0 terms is strictly increasing.

      bonehead: "As far as IF you choose ".99..." to represent 1, then it is not a good choice." Says you, a clueless troIIing muppet. Where's your proof? In fact it is the best choice. However, that choice is not made directly. Rather, it is a consequence of more general choices (and definitions). bonehead: "Basics in decimal based representation of real numbers, ".99..." looks like a real number." Your grammar is atrocious. I can barely decipher what you said because of it. What do real numbers look like - bear in mind that they are pure abstract concepts that only exist as ideas. bonehead: "Real number integers in decimal based representation should have no non-zero digits to the right of the decimal point." Says you, a clueless troIIing muppet. As -usual- always, you just assert, but never justify. bonehead: "Rational numbers are the ratio of 2 integers." That's nearly right. Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as the ratio of two integers. You have been told that many times, yet you repeat the same false "definition". That's because you are a clueless troIIing muppet. bonehead: "Then ".99..."/".99..."=".99..." a rational number?" Of course it is. bonehead: "What about the sum of a infinite geometric series??" What about it? bonehead: "The sum of any infinite series with all terms >0 is questionable ..." Yet again, as -usual- always, you haven't justified your ridiculous assertion. If the series is convergent, then it has a sum. There are plenty of ways to test for convergence. bonehead: "... and is only defined by a limit." That's right, except YOU don't know what that limit is or how it is defined, despite being told hundreds of times. If you have a point, what is it? bonehead: "The sum of any 2 numbers >0 is > either of the 2 numbers." That's right. It must be the most advanced math you know, hence your need to keep on repeating it. bonehead: "A infinite series of >0 terms is strictly increasing." Nope. It is strictly not changing. What is increasing is the value of the terms in the sequence of its partial sums as you step through it. Over a year and you still don't know what sums, limits, series or sequences are. --- That was yet another of your rambling comments where you fail to make any points, only make a series of (mainly false) assertions, and don't make the slightest attempt at justifying anything you say. That's because you are a clueless troIIing muppet.

Who, other than cIueIess muppets like yourself, is disputing it? I said, "Let 0.(N) represent the n digit string N being repeated. Then: 10^n * 0.(N) = N.(N) = N + 0.(N) => (10^n - 1) * 0.(N) = N => 0.(N) = N / (10^n - 1) Note that the decimal numeral for 10^n - 1 an n digit string of 9s. Also note that N and 10^n - 1 are natural numbers, so 0.(N) represents a rational number." I'll add that it immediately follows that 0.(9) = 9/9 = 1 and so it represents a rational number. bonehead: "Basically it could be said that n 0s are missing." What 0s, you muppet? bonehead: "Using infinite numerals in arithmetic is mostly inaccurate." Where's your proof of that ridiculous claim, you deIusionaI muppet? bonehead: "10*".99..." does not equal ".99...". LOL. That's right. 10 * 0.999... = 9.999... bonehead: "Further the discussion is whether 1=".99..." which is related." What discussion and what is related? bonehead: "".99..."/1 is not rational ..." Where's your proof of that false assertion? In over a year you haven't ever tried to prove any of your assertions. I have shown you that 0.999... is rational at least a hundred times. bonehead: "...and 9/9 is 1." True, so is 0.999... bonehead: "".99..."/(9/9)=".99..."*9/9=".99..."" LOL. • @Chris-5318
    @Chris-5318 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

    At about 3:38 you asked for two integers whose ratio is 0.999.... The most "natural" ratio is 9/9. In fact proof wiki shows how to do a delayed long division procedure in order to derive 0.999... from 9/9. Obviously you are trying the good old appeal to personal incredulity fallacious argument there. Here's an loosely related semi general argument (that you'll hate). Let 0.(N) represent the n digit string N being repeated. Then: 10^n * 0.(N) = N.(N) = N + 0.(N) => (10^n - 1) * 0.(N) = N => 0.(N) = N / (10^n - 1) Note that 10^n - 1 as a decimal is an n digit string of 9s. Note that N and 10^n - 1 are natural numbers, so 0.(N) represents a rational number. So 0.(857142) = 857142 / 999999 = 6/7. I personally like 0.(9) = 9/9 = 0.(99) = 99/99 = 0.(999) = 999/999 = 1/ You'll hate it because you'll see it as blasphemy.

    I took Calculus BC in highschool. Failed out and had to drop to calculus AB, just barely passed the class, but did well enough on the AP exam to test into Calculus II in college. Just before that, I had read a book and talked to an academically gifted Asian friend of mine, and learned some tricks to excelling in Math courses. It was much ado with allotting 20% of time on lecture notes and topic reading. But up to 80% of time on practice problems. At the very least, completing all the required homework problems, then maybe some extra for practice, and going so far as to correct the problems you can if you happen to have a solution manual or answer page. I grew to freakin love calculus, going on to Ace Calculus II, Calculus III, Ordinary differential Equations, and linear Algebra. By applying the same technique, I also managed to Ace Chemistry I, II and Physics I and II. I say all that to say this. Its just too bad all that science and higher level math teaches you squat about making money and building wealth. lol! It was fun though.
