I Taught My Jumping Spider How to Jump
In this video I tried to befriend my jumping spider since he only has a few months to live. As a reward I introduced him to his life long girlfriend and built him a retirement home. The mating dance they did was a sight to behold!

Great Video. Thanks for taking the time to record the process =)

What kind of moss did you use?
@@lorenzonaquita3682 it’s just the common garden moss. I’m not quite sure what it’s official name is
name her urbosa
You need a Caribbeana versicolor, if you don't already keep them.
@@l.w.2468 I actually have one! I also made a video with a Bioactive enclosure build but she’s outgrown it so I’m planning to create a proper environment for her.
It's better to present the back of your hand or arm, since our hands are usually somewhat sweaty feeling.
UPDATE: Billy has unfortunately passed away 😢 He has been matured for almost a year and sadly it was his time to go. RIP Billy, you will be missed 😞
I think there is too much vertical height and not enough horizontal floor space for a terrestrial species? You asked what we thought, so that’s what I think. It is beautiful though.
God damn, old Billy smooth legs got on that spidussy *and* managed to live. Absolute legend.
Now he can tell this story to his 200 children
Billy looked like he was squaring up there.
@@sonnyz1114 He’s definitely a fighter
Very captivating ❤
@@alyssalee7422 I’m glad you enjoyed it!
W video once again
I’ve read that jumping spiders may dislike the texture, oils, and warmth of our skin. I wonder if that’s why he suddenly freaked out and ricocheted upwards when he jumped on your hand for the first time?
@@hentron420 ahhh that makes sense! That’s probably why it happened. Hopefully the next generation I can gradually get them used to handling!
@@lostInExotics They can also feel your heartbeat through your skin so they know they're stepping onto something that's alive. I imagine they have a tendency to instinctively avoid that since it's generally not in their best interest for survival. In my experience, it's just a matter of patience. Mine usually jumps on and then immediately back off my hand several times before finally jumping/walking on my hand and actually sticking around. It takes him awhile to get comfortable with me every time. Offering them your hand as a new high point for the spider to climb or jump to, like you're doing at around 2:40 seems to be the most effective method.
@@user-js4iw9rz2w That's so cool how they can feel your heartbeat! I will keep trying to get him comfortable with being held. Thank you for the tip!
Not 100% true.. yes you want to wash your hands before handling... but only because they are sensitive to certain chemicals used in fragrances such as incense, candles, air fresheners, lotions abd body sprays... you don't want any of those things near your spider. I own 6 of them and handle them almost every day.
@@meak13 that’s good to know! It may have had to do with me recently washing my hands with scented soap.
This video is so well made

I have a white knee called shelob. She's 7.5 inches and her size is just... indescribable.. she's absolutely enormous, written measurements do no justice
Oh man I can't imagine the sheer size of that! She's very responsive already, I don't know how much more crazy they would get at that size!!
@lostInExotics it doesn't slow down haha, the response is just always there, but she's never shown any aggression. I've had her since 3cm and she kicked hairs at me once. Would I hold her..absolutely not, serious big fangs, your talking almost theraphosa size fangs. Best display spider I've ever had, by a million miles. Enjoy her/him bro
@@ToeKnee666 Just the thought of holding them is insane.. I agree with them being display divas. This one is already slowly outgrowing this enclosure 😅
@lostInExotics they usually grow around 4-4.5 inches a year. I got shelob at 3cm and she hit 7.5 inches in around 16 months. She's now in a permanent 24x24 bio active. Loves her food. 3 extra large locusts every 10 days
@@ToeKnee666 that’s awesome! Sounds like Shelob is living the dream :)
Beauty, eh?
Yup indeed!
6:31 I made a mistake guys! It should've been .75" or 1.9cm!! I had a brain fart
are you going to make a bigger one?
Yes but probably not with acrylic cuz it’s expensive the larger it is
Your slings look like small tarantulas. My Arizona Blonde is a sliiiiiing! LOL. No hair at all, looks like a gray ant! Even after 8 months and 2 molts, you can still barely see her. I'm ALWAYS worried on how to feed it. She seems to be doing okay, tho. 🤷♂🤷♂
Yup those species are known to be slow growing! Just give them chopped mealworms or dead crickets and they will scavenge :)
@@lostInExotics Thank you, sir.
@@ChynaFearsBuckwheat2001 you’re welcome!
Priscilla Queen of the desert.....love the setup
Thank you! I will definitely add that to the list as a I have multiple balfouris :)
That "oh nono, oh shi-" at 13:21 followed by a nervous laughter is so relatable. I have the same when I need to rehouse my C. Versicolors. 😅
Right! I wouldn’t want to chase around an arboreal tarantula in the house 😅
@@lostInExotics Same! Hahaha
So cute
I'd like to see you build that acrylic enclosure! It looks great!
Thank you! I will have a tutorial in the next week or two :) stay tuned!
Very neat setup
I really like your narration which is very entertaining and calm, then there is a little Minecraft sound. Make it interesting and cute, then your enclosure design for her which is also very interesting and pretty, I love it!
Thank you! Your kind words mean a lot to me :)
This is cool, I just got two slings about a week ago. - Lasiodora Striatipes - Brachypelma Albiceps 👍
This was really helpful! Thanks. New keeper. I have three dwarf slings all either going into premolt/in premolt, or recently molted (4 days ago). Nervous time. Lol I’ve watched probably hundreds of hours of tarantula content before and after getting my spiders. I think this might have been the most helpful where feeding slings is concerned. And thank you for not saying, “Don’t worry, they’re probably fine,” and moving on, but actually showing details and examples and the 2am follow up instead. 😅
I’m very glad this helped you out! It always concerned me before whether they have eaten or not so I definitely understand the worries. Im glad I was able to ease your mind :)
Can you please make one someday for a GBB? 🙏
Thats definitely on my list :)
Since A. genics can grow huge, you could name her Titan, the giant 😂
That’s genius! I’m definitely not ready for her to reach her full size 😅
you really made a beautiful enclosure but, don't forget that this species is terrestrial and not arboreal, so why did you make it vertical instead of horizontal... and although they like humidity, they are more mixed. they like both climates. I think this enclosure is more of a versicolor .. anyway, it's my opinion
Thank you! And those are fair points. While normally I would keep them in conventional setups, I wanted to create a snippet of a rainforest floor where the tree trunk meets the ground and the surrounding foliage. Also if you follow the enclosure guidelines of 1.5-2x DLS in height then I’m still within it. If you look at other setups like exotics lair and dark den they also have a bit of height in their terrestrial setups.
Yes, I completely understand the idea of course.. but congratulations on the enclosure.. I should make a video on how you made the enclosure.. what glue you used, and especially how you made the locks. It would be interesting. Congratulations on the work..
@@mgphotography3216 Thank you :) That's a great idea and one that's always asked for! I will make it in the next couple videos
@@lostInExotics wathing for hehehh
I want to build my own enclosure too at some point. How do you keep the parts together? I would assume glue but wanted to ask anyways.
I use an acrylic cement that melts the acrylic and welds together to form a solid joint. It’s called “Weld-on #4”
Acanthoscuria geniculata I've a sub female 🕷
They're awesome!
Her size growth is crazy
Right!! Can’t believe she used to be the size smaller than .25”
I just got my first Caribena and this is huge inspiration for what I want her enclosure to be. You got a sub and I can’t wait to see what you bring in the future. Keep up the good work
Thank you! I’m glad my video has inspired you :) I will have another video, that I’m sure you’ll like, releasing this week!
Love it! Well done😊❤️
Thank you 😊
Where did u get the tank?? Well done 👏
Thank you! I made it myself :)
Amazingly... i did one myself, but the plastic sheets i used curved by time for some reason, i felt water n moister made them concave 😅
@@fakahany Oh no! Yes they do bow in due to moisture, sometimes more ventilation help with it or using thicker sheets like 3mm
Add jumping spiders and also small cockroaches or mealworm beetles
Good suggestions! Definitely needs more inhabitants
