My journey from buying an S&S 34 in 2013 (with little sailing experience) to becoming a confident coastal and ocean single hander. This project took me 30 days of a 115 day severe lockdown in Melbourne Australia. It saved my soul.

Blustery San Remo Anchorage
มุมมอง 1647 ปีที่แล้ว
So I had to get away on Mendana, but the weather forecast was a shocker. I decided to steal a day trip through the Port Phillip heads at 9am arriving in San Remo just before dark...Then the fun started as the wind really blew up for a few days.
Chat with John (caretaker) of 3 Hummock Island Tasmania
มุมมอง 2427 ปีที่แล้ว
John and his wife have looked after the tracks and aerodrome on 3 hummock island for the last 8 years. 3 Hummock Island is a small island off the north west coast of Tasmania. Beautiful! Am I a goose or a geese! dooooh.
Testing some new heavy weather systems

Great day with 25-30 knot winds from the North on The Bay. This means flat seas - a great environment to test some newly installed heavy weather systems.

Dolphin Festival in the Southern Ocean
มุมมอง 788 ปีที่แล้ว
Recent trip exploring Tasmania from St Kilda. This is a short clip of what was a half hour 'Dolphin Fest', during which we were surrounded by up to 500 dolphins doing random gymnastics and generally having a fantastic time. I have never seen so many...Nor so active.
The magic of a balanced helm

Sailing on a fine day without touching the tiller or using autopilot - magic!
Another exhilarating trip -this time to Blairgowrie at the bottom of the bay

This is my journey from buying a great open sailing vessel with no knowledge of boats or little knowledge of sailing in 2013 to participating in a non-stop single handed race around the world - the MOD global 2019-20 single handed race!

Having fun surfing Mendana Goosewing

A great day on my way from Geelong to Beaumaris Bay (Port Philip- Melbourne). Very cold and a long day eventually weighing anchor at about 8pm.
Practicing downwind sailing single handed with a whisker pole
มุมมอง 6K9 ปีที่แล้ว
I am trying out my new whisker pole. It is telescopic and weighs just 6 kilos. The reviews were not fantastic but I bought it anyway with the downsides in mind. It works well so far in up to 25 knots from behind...I will ditch my other pole which weighs 20 kilos and is 14 ft long. This one telescopes from 7ft to 15 ft.
A hard time lifting anchor
มุมมอง 1849 ปีที่แล้ว
The chain ran away from me and I let 69 metres go... Lifting anchor was excruciating!.. I'm glad I was diligent in choosing a good anchorage with land to windward all night

Stunning dawn breaking on the bass strait
I would have loved to hear this but the music is overpowering!
The music is way too loud...
I'm really interested in an s&s 34, i only work summer and get all winter to myself. The thought of sailing to the canaries then across to the Caribbean for a winter is my dream. Hate to ask a personal question but how much did the boat cost? I have seen these boats ranging from 15 to 40k and it's hard for me to gauge what a fair price is? and what upgrades have you done to her? Fair winds amigo
Jimbolecat, my boat in its original condition was Australia $60k. I Added everything you could imagine over 4 year -Watermaker, self steering, upgraded to 400ah house bank, new Genoa, new mainsail, New Assymetric spinnaker, new running rigging, new 30hp Yanmar engine, new paint job and lots of small cosmetic things. Sold her in fantastic condition for Au$90k
Interesting video, what is your opinion of your S&S 34? I'm looking at buying one but I'm new to boat ownership. I have a good few hours experience sailing but i've never owned a boat. I've got my heart set on an S&S 34 because the value for money seems very good, I want something that can go anywhere. Could you give me any advice on a few things to look for? known faults? things to avoid? any help much appreciated, fair winds amigo
Hi Juanka, thanks for your interest. S&S 34s are fantastic boats. I bought mine straight after my Competent Crew course. I really was new to sailing. They are great boats for single handed sailing and built well. If you are buying an old one I would have the surveyor check the rudder stock. I removed mine and replaced the bearing as a matter of maintenance. You will find some osmosis in the hull, but a little is not a big deal and can be cleaned up/removed. For me, when buying any boat its about the big things: Engine, Rigging, Rudder Keel...Leeks and fittings can always be changed easily and fairly cheaply. I replaced the engine in mine after 2 years of hell and dangerous engine failures in awkward situations. Good luck!
Doing great
Hi
Dad your the best
Great video. What boat is yours, please? (model and size)
Hi Fabio, thanks for your comment. Its an S&S 34. The same boat sailed around the world by Jesse Martin and Jessica Watson.
Mendana's Ocean Miles thanks! She looks so easy to sail singlehanded
What!
I gues it all takes practice. I stumbled on it too...I can't do it if it is choppy and it is easiest to windward at about a 50 degree angle to the wind... thanks for your comment.
I accidentally managed this the other day whilst testing my autopilot. Ended up leaving the autopilot on as a rudder lock only and sailing close hauled for 20 miles. I still dont quite know how, because every time Ive tried that in the past it hasnt worked!
Is the topping lift necessary? I just want the minimum setup.
Andy, I've lost ure phone no. Call me on 0468455359
Do you use a preventer on the main in case of accidental gibe?
Yes I normally would when I am at sea. This was a very light day on an inland waterway, so very low risk of Jibing.
Hi Monofied, I have cut out the music now and you can hear better what I am saying. Thanks for the feedback.
would have been cool to hear what yr sayin.
Great day solo sailing in 30 knots of wind. My boat showed her true colours as a vessel built to sail to windward.
