The reason I started Shotokan. 1983. He flunked me on my 1st Dan 1989. And he was correct. Very weak Kibadach Dachi. He changed my life. Saw him n a Black Belt Mag. Kicking some guy in the Solar Plexus. Had him bent in half. I wanted a kick like that. And I do. Oss.

We called him..."The Mountain Man"! I fought Asa one time in the team finals (1988?) in Pheonix. I lost! He was a counter puncher and would throw a simultaneous age uke to deflect anything toward his face while he was attacking. You knew it was coming but he did it anyway! I've got the video somewhere...

I’m friends with Asa and actually will be seeing him tomorrow! He’s also a BJJ black belt and I train with him at Paulo Santana’s gym. Great guy, one of the overall most knowledgeable people regarding martial arts I’ve met.

I trained with Frank Smith but I doubt if Asa would remember me. Though he'd probably remember my teammate, Al Marco. He had an epic rivalry with Chuck Coburn.

I usually find these demonstrations one big yawn. This one though was excellent. No showboat stuff. You can see it was very effective karate technique, done with just the right amount of control. My first recollection was reading about Smith Sensei's encounter in LA with the then current JKA Champion (I will omit his name to avoid the wrath of JKA fans). Evidently, the sparring match did not go to plan and Smith Sensei gave the Japanese champion a lesson in kumite.

Yes this is true. But it wasnt until Enoeda broke Franks jaw in front of everyone that made Frank realize how serious this is. His karate is admirable

I trained with Frank Smith, Ray Delke, James Yabe, and others I can't remember as white, green, and first degree brown belt. I had great respect for "Bad Bad Ass Frank Smith". I recall a time when Chuck Norris wanted to train with and Nisayama required he wear a white belt. the line was rotated and when Norris stopped at Frank Smith and Norris, Chuck Norris was limping badley. I guess his karate was not as good as JKA. OH The good old 60s. Howard Johnny Laird

Remember reading about him in Black belt, he got a bunch of praise. Joe Lewis once said he felt he could easily have beat him, but then again, that match never happened, so I think maybe talk is cheaper than action!

It never happened...according to Frank. I had the honor of competing under him for over 3 years in the mid to late 80's. We heard a ton of great stories of his early days, like when Enoeda destroyed his jaw with a round kick. After that...no more Mr. Niceguy! Lotta great memories. I once told him about a Lewis interview in BB Mag where he said "...Frank would've been meat on my table!" (or something to that effect). Frank just chuckled and said, "I guess we'll never know!" I glad to see some of these old vids on YT.

@@wchphoto lmfao Joe had plenty of opportunity to show up st Nishiyama senseis dojo. I heard in an interview (its even on YT) where Joe said he HATED the "SHOTO-CAN" fighters and he even said he STARTED with them and then they didnt want any part of him. Joe lewis was a punk imo
