JamLabẓ̌ ep. 4 - Skycast
มุมมอง 47หลายเดือนก่อน
In this installment of the JamLabẓ̌ series titled Skycast, Matt Nguyen, also known as Halfdecentheart, and Adrian Papez perform a fully improvised composition. In this style of free improvisation, the performers rely on musical communication and sensory experience to communicate a free-flowing dialogue. In this case, the improvisation was based on a window that was in front of us. This window p...

About as "wrong" as a note can get (check description)
มุมมอง 2.5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I created this riff by shifting a chord chromatically alongside some pedal tones. A voice in the shifting chord crossed one of the pedaltones, creating some sharp dissonances. Listen for the 9, b9, unison, and #7 intervals, which are a result of the parallel chromatic motion and voice crossing. Do some of these notes sound "wrong" to you, or do they sound natural given the context of the voice ...

New electric guitar improvisation. In this clip, I am focusing on my right-hand technique. I am working on increasing my speed and the constancy and accuracy of my articulations.

sounds good, cool guitar
this is what i imagine nick drake’s compositions would have sounded like during those final disassociative, suicidal ideation-riddled months of his life, if it weren’t for the intentional dissonance it’d really sound like one of his cgcfce songs like parasite
Interesting psychedelic noises But I'm totally not hip enough for this stuff. Rock on! 🤘👍✌
I didn't hear a single "wrong" note... Dissonances are never "wrong" if you know how to use it :)
That's true. Any note can be "right" given the right context and perspective. Really, there is no such thing as right or wrong in music. There are only decisions and interpretations.
Pretty slick playing...was expecting more!
Cool stuff. But damn, what a tease I wished it was stretched out more. Am I the only person that thinks this ? 🤘🤘👍✌.
Feels like a calming walk in the forest but there's something in the corner of my eye
Thanks, I feel that.
as a prog and jazz listener i see this as an absolute win
I'm also a prog and jazz fan. Thanks!
Dude this is really beautiful. At first it was a bit jarring but the more listen the more the song shows itself. Sounds like radiohead (in the best way possible). Definately a lot of potential with this song. Would be awesome to hear it resolve into a more consonant melody and then back into this dissonant melody. Well done!!
Thanks! I feel the same, it takes me a moment to adjust to the harmony. Yeah, I am often tempted to explore more bold melodic and harmonic choices in my composing. Maybe I'll turn this into a piece. Also, I do like radiohead lol
If you subtract all the "right" notes from the grand total, you pretty much get how I play guitar 😁
😂
i love it
Thanks!
I think there's a lot of untapped potential in utilizing such dissonances in music. The music here is pretty, mysterious and at the same time has this air of coldness that cannot be fully grasped. After 3 or more listens it stops being dissonant for me, but the coldness is still present. I think it's quite a unique sound, which I'd like to hear more of
Thank you. I agree that there is lots of untapped potential in dissonant harmony. After a few listens, the dissonance changes for me as well. It's quite fascinating how harmony is often so culturally encoded for most of us. I find this cultural encoding seems to lack a description of many different niche harmonic flavors and also mis-represents some musical attributes as lacking complexity or significance. I enjoyed hearing your description of how you feel about this music. It reflects insight and openness towards music. I will continue to explore this sound as well as more musical contexts like this. Thanks for watching and commenting. I would love to hear your perspective as I post more in the future!
After reading the description........ It's well beyond my theoretical nerd level. Sort of get it enough to appreciate it. But having a discussion on the topic would be a great exercise in futility. Pass ... anyone else ??
Do some of these notes sound "wrong" to you, or do they sound natural given the context of the voice leading?
As you say they are dissonances, so that exactly means they are not natural. Is that wrong? For me sounds georgous and pleasant ;)
Thanks! I love dissonance in music. It's so true, what even is right and wrong in music and why do we think about it like that? How do we define dissonance? Thanks for listening and commenting. It's cool to hear that you find it gorgeous and pleasant despite the sharp dissonances!
you mofo play a very nice way. great you have talent
Holy cow . What the heck . Crazy man .
Nice chilled solid tone.
Keep it up brother!
somethig almost always comes from nothing. that's the cool thing.

Ethan Fawcett is one of my best friends, and we played together in the indie band Zen Michelan for a few years. Part 2 coming soon. My guitar tuning is 1-6: 1E 2B 3F# 4D 5G 6C
That was beautiful
I agree . It does sound beautiful

My favorites are the spontaneous improvisational dities . Not to say the practiced pieces aren't great. Just saying. Wow cool stuff

Hey man, someone recommended your videos to me and suggested we should jam.. well I guess I’m living on the other side of the ocean.. but I like your rhythmic feel here.. keep on going! (Btw. On some of your videos the backing tracks are too loud so it’s difficult to hear and appreciate your playing.. just a tip)
Lukatherish molidic hooks ? No? Pop
