I remember watching her interview Khanyi Mbau and crying over the fact that she's having it difficult in the industry coz she's light-skinned, Khanyi was confused af coz Khanyi saw Pearls' skin shade as goals. I was rolling my eyes when she sobbed. Acting wise, I watched Queen Sono and I understand why they cancelled it babe...it took me weeks to finish that series. She's a decent actress, nothing outstanding about her acting but I think she's a great presenter, obviously Bonang is untouchable in that area but Pearl can hold her own in presenting...oh and by the way, I'm a light-skinned Zulu woman

@@genevaxo you clearly have selective comprehension... So glad to hear you speaking the truth. Much love to SA! As African Americans we had our own colored class in New Orleans called the Creole ppl (who were mixed race). They turned their backs and acted superior to blacks facing violence and oppression in Louisiana. Until racist politicians decided to pass a law stating one drop of black blood in your ancestry makes you black (as if it’s a contaminate to your gene pool) which newly classified Creole ppl as black as well. Then suddenly they wanted to cozy up to us. BOMBASTIC SIDE EYE! So when we see Tyla be marketed as a black woman to us as black Americans yet she claims she’s not EVEN black we immediately are triggered and draw a line in the sand. We already know what time it is.

She was saying her culture in broader sense. She was authentic when she said she was classified as coloured in South Africa and she knows in America is a slur word. Was she supposed to lie to the Americans that she is black in this country. To be a coloured is not a slur here. In America if you are not white you are black, mixed race or not. She is black in their context. She is also right in saying amapiano is her culture. Are you trying to say in South Africa we have different amapiano music according to our ethnicity, then you are wrong. We have one amapiano music and is South African genre as we had kwaeto music for South Africa, is all South African music. Tyla represent us and our culture globally and we should all be proud of that and support her. We cannot be her hater too. We must avoid apartheid mentality.😊

You are the SA people I was talking about in the video when I said 50% is blinded (by the image) and probably excited to have amapiano be recognized globally but... The message here is "Culture Vulture"... I didn't say she had to lie if you listened, I said she should show her culture, not lean on ours to be relevant. Maize meal is not coloured culture, yes she said it was a favorite meal but why not show her cultures meals? And why is her sister using our traditional meals as props? I'll tell you why... because being in the black culture /or black adjacent is profitable. Especially in the entertainment industry look at the Kardashians. Yes amapiano is an SA sound but it is a Black SA sound so saying you represent it is a reeeach, again, same as hip hop. There's a lot of appropriation and that is the point. Do you know Sho Madjozi? Do you know how she comes in? Do you know what allegedly happened to her? I'm almost sure you don't. If you did you wouldn't be saying the above. Maybe my delivery was the issue but I'm just standing up for my SA black Culture... Amapiano and is ours has to be represented right and respectfully and the people it came from have the light shown on them - not appropriated. And Uncle Waffles in next, so it's not about "apartheid mentality"

Yazi, I hear you. But Tyla shem has never said she came up with amapiano and the dances, she appropriately placed it to who it belongs to which is how SAns are generally🤔, we enjoy each other's culture with the knowledge that it belongs to that certain cultural group. Also there's nothing wrong with a musical genre maturing/altered a bit because its done to appeal to a certain demographic: e.g. Nigerians take on the amapiano beat is faster than we normally enjoy in South Africa. Also like, Reggae, it has transformed to appeal to other people or just assimilated with sounds of the nations that listen to it, the original sound of reggae hearing it in bob marley or lucky dubes songs is far different from what sean paul and more later reggae artists. Also being coloured in south africa is also incredibly diverse within. Tyla specifically said she's mixed with zulu, white, and Indian🤔 on top of that she's a coloured who grew up in the city of jhb, her "culture" would be influenced by that environment. Unless you are saying there's a specific coloured culture she should show? If that's the case what is it? I'm curious to know how the jhb coloureds are culturally. Coz I'm aware of the culture of cape coloureds, cape malayas etc... But I'm not familiar with coloureds in jhb. Don't a lot south africans eat pap kanti? I mean even Afrikaans people eat it nje. 😂 Lol hayi ke nyani, there are some racist coloured people shem and they don't even know why🤦🏾‍♀️but it doesn't mean she is kodwa sisi. And I won't lie it was the first time seeing a coloured person with her hair type with braids lol its usually the coloureds who have more of a black persons hair texture like Trevor noah. Sizobona yazi 🤷🏾‍♀️lol maybe she is still going to show more of cultures of South Africa or show us more of coloured culture. OR she may prove you right in the long run.😅 Interesting point of view kodwa Pinky, especially the sho majozi link,it was news to me.

This comment❤, thank you for educating. Unfortunately I'm offended by this video as I'm coloured from JHB, we mixed (with regards to myself I have black and Indian heritage) we grew up eating pap😅 and so did most south africans because its a cultural thing but its also budget friendly, so I'm not sure where this is coming from. I acknowledge the youtubers perspective, however from the sounds of it i doubt she has personally interacted with different coloured groups, therefore group everyone into 1 pot. Furthermore, JHB coloureds are different to those in Durban and even cape town. Eg durban coloureds majorly don't speak Afrikaans, instead they able to speak Zulu. We are different. So thank you for this comment because it's truly offensive and 1 sided.

Our idiosyncrasies and subculture within the South African rainbow nation. I will very much agree with you that there is a very classist narrative amongst Coloured Saffas but this isn't strictly a Coloured thing. Black upper class South Africans treat poor Black people terribly. Also I'm not sure what your point is. Yes we all know that in South Africa Tyla wouldn't be considered Black but race is a man made construct. Here in the States, they keep asking me if I'm Peurto Rican. I have a Mexican friend who is considered White in Mexico but in the US she is not. The concept of Race is not as Black And White ( no pun intended) If you don't like her music that is one thing. Each to their own. Because music is a very subjective thing. But why feel the need to bring someone down. I personally LOVE her sound and will continue to listen. @@QhayiyaCobo-ts9me the thing that people forget is that Tyla grew up in a much more intergrated South Africa than for example, I did. Still in the late 90s people of different races in SA were not mixing with each other. High schools were only beginning to mix all races together. So now fast forward 30 years, cultures are blending. Her best friend is a Black Jozi girl and for sure Tyla's influences and style are ingemeng with all the subcultures around her. In fact Jozi unlike Cape Town (even now) is a lot more mixed and blended. So yes there will be overlap of Culture. It's unfortunate that the word Colored in the US is derogatory, but that is not our fault, so now she has to show sensitivity to that because she's on the Global stage . I personally will tell everyone and anyone who asks me here in the States that I am loudly and proudly Coloured. It's a tricky topic and in fact due to the fact that Colonizers labeled us as such, many Coloured people don't want to be called that, and I get that too. So yes you are right it is confusing to many. I just don't get why South Africans want to bring her down, you will never find Nigerians lambasting their stars. i feel like you are being cynical with regard to tyla's intentions. the way i saw the whole thing go down tyla clarified that she was coloured not because of any shade to black south africans but specifically out of respect for the distinction and the difference in struggle that black sacans faced compared to coloured. she didnt pretend to be black for profit in america she was literally bullied into claiming blackness in america because they were calling her a coon for wanting to respect the identitys of black south africans. On the culture vulture allegations i think jozi coloured and eastern cape coloureds would fight you on that amapiano cant be coloured culture too. Tyla makes afro pop mixing piano with rnb and pop sounds. Tyla is also part zuluand you know how zulu's are about maintaing cultural connection even if you are mixed. This is all over the place but i just think these allegations are a bit harsh and cynical and i think Tyla deserves just a little bit of grace as would any person introduced to such an intense environment

OMG! thank you so much for this! i am not south african i am ghanian- american & lived in pretoria, SA as an expat for 3 years. have witnessed and experienced the racial dynamics of SA and i have been trying to tell people exactly this ever since the "is tyla black" controversy, and i would tell people hat my issue with tyla was never that she identify as colored; i don't deny that nor do i want her to claim black because i agree that she is colored/mixed race. My issue with her is why is her ENTIRE image is based on native south african culture(s) as in the culture of the BLACK people of south africa? why does she not incorporate other aspects of her identity, like her indian heritage, into her imagery? She's not fooling me, especially because i too have experienced anti-blackness, colorism, racism, and xenophobia from white, colored, and indian south africans which was funny because i was not an immigrant to SA i was living there because my dad was doing business over there lol. anyway I love south africa it's a BEAUTIFUL country, especially cape town, and i really hope the the natives wake up from the fake unity and inclusion trance that they've been brainwashed to believe exists or should exist and rightfully take full control of their' country. much love to you and i applaud you for standing up for your country, your culture and your people!!! south africa is for south africans... the REAL south africans!!

Her entire imagine is based on native South Africans?😂😂😂do you know what being coloured actually means in SA? Why would she incorporate "other aspects of her identity such as her Indian heritage"?? She is not Indian. Coloured people have their own culture which overlaps with black culture in South Africa hence why you find yourself being so confused saying stuff like "her entire image is based on the black people of South Africa". There is a big difference between being mixed race and Coloured in South Africa, you guys don't seem to get that. What Indian heritage should she incorporate? she knows nothing about being Indian, all she knows is being coloured..You guys have so much to say about our race relations & how we understand race here forgetting that our history is entirely different from yours.
