I can only assume this is an AI reading. The rhythm and timing of the reading, the understanding of punctuation and verbal flow, are way off

0:26 this. This looks like one of the guys has a knife behind his back and he is gonna flay the other guy alive. I'm bot sure that the AI understands a proper, non-creepy handshake. There is sinister intent written in this entire interaction. That scene belongs in a movie where both those guys go back into the house (why are they meeting in a field anyway?) and one of them just loads and cleans his entire room full of guns, and the other guy starts making dinner and filling the food with ground glass, arsenic and Warfarin and rat poison. This is just wrong. AI is presenting these relatives as if they are absolutely going to torture each other as soon as the handshake is over. Also, the guy on the left, his hat is too small for his head, or else he has a deformed peanut head. At least they have the correct amount of fingers.

Derleth was probably a huge douchebag and everything said about him is true but no one can write like this anymore. They get close but it will never be the same. So I'm not as picky when I want my Lovecraft Mythos fix. It's the whole Victorian/Edwardian olde world period horror dramas that I love. It's crazy that the old dudes wrote stuff, some over a hundred years ago, that has launched entire genres and they're still scary as hell. It makes me sad that Lovecraft died poor and not widely appreciated by a large part of readers. Mountains of Madness is a masterpiece.

Robot readings are still no good, and not worth the listener's time. Incorrect pronunciation and awkward, artificial tempo. A very poor effort.

Audible needs to come up with something better than this if they want to keep users buying expensive audio books.

I'm confused. Is this book fiction or nonfiction disguised as fiction? I want to believe it's nonfiction. It'd be scarier. Of course, I'll never see the actual grimoires of the world. Those are scary too. ❤
