Lotus Cortina Action, 2014 IMSA Reunion
Since our Lotus Cortina is now for sale, we thought it would be fun to update and reupload one of our most popular onboard videos. This is Mike Jr. starting from pole in the 2014 IMSA Reunion race at Summit Point. He had a blast throwing the Cortina around, and hopefully you'll enjoy riding along!

      It was a huge difference in speed from the cockpit! I'd wager it may have been an even larger time difference than that, at least until the braking point. That's the fun thing about vintage, though; you get these happenstance matchups of totally different cars that create engaging battles.

    Wonderful racing, I well remember the British Touring Car events of the '60s where Lotus Cortinas battled with Mini Coopers, Galaxies, and MkII Jaguars. Such different specs across the marques, yet the racing was amazing. Sadly, in most of today's categories, the specs are so tightly controlled leading to processional and boring races. I have all but lost interest in motorsport as the result. I yearn for the return to my openly classified racing.

    I can't say I like the way the Lotus driver uses the gearshift, constantly beating the synchro and not lifting the throttle during upshifts. At 5:05 you can see a very early Lotus 7, or VII if you want to be exact.....

    • @MichaelsVintageRacing
      @MichaelsVintageRacing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can understand the concern, but the car is equipped with a dogbox so there are no synchros to worry about 🙂 and yes, that's an early series 1 Seven!

      @pashakdescilly7517 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichaelsVintageRacing ah, ok about beating synchro then ! But if he runs the engine to redline, up-shifts without lifting off, he can easily over-rev the engine. Don't want to damage that FWA Climax.

      @@MichaelsVintageRacing An FWB explains why the 11 runs away from your Lola Mk1 in a straight line. I have loved the sinuous shape of the Lola ever since reading a 'Classic Car' article about them circa 1980, and wanted to have a good look at one, but have never seen one. I read that the car is lighter with better suspension than the 11. Can you comment on the comparison? How do the aerodynamics compare?

    • @MichaelsVintageRacing
      @MichaelsVintageRacing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While both cars are milestones in chassis development, the Lola is miles ahead in design. It features four-wheel independent suspension, stressed aluminum paneling, slightly lower drag, and lower weight than the 11. This Mk1 also has an FWB, but as it's a customer car I was being more conservative with rpm. You can see and read more about both cars at our website if you'd like, michaelsvintageracing.com

    Bloody great driving there mate, I thought you had him on lap 7 at that tight left hander, but you still got him. Is it a 65 or 66 Sporty Corty? It reminds me of when I had my 63 GT Cortina and when I used to take her to Lakeside near my home town Brisbane and the dices I would have against V8 Ford Falcons and Holdens... they'd get me on the main straight but come to the carousel and down through into hungrys ect my little ole girl would walk away from them. I miss that sound of twin Webber's throaty roar. Try to get your hands on the Bathurst GT500 box as they were different again and suited to long straights(Conrad at Bathurst is about a mile long and going down hill) but also good for steep up hill twisty mountain roads(like Bathurst) I loved the ratios compared to the stock GT ones and even the 1200 and 1500 as it was almost perfect.... if only it had a 5th forward gear.😁.

    • @MichaelsVintageRacing
      @MichaelsVintageRacing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! This is a 66. That box would be quite the find! The car is a bit of a sitting duck on the straights but that's due as much to the engine's state of tune as anything else. It couldn't pull a much taller gear as is, but this setup is the best compromise.

      Yeah, as you can see from the video I can definitely empathize. On a less power-heavy track than Lime Rock you may be able to hypothetically set up a pass through a corner complex, but it's always easier to have a "good line on the straight" as I like to put it 😄

      The car wouldn't be able to pull a taller rear end ratio well, so the compromise is to lose a bit of top end and gain acceleration and maneuverability. The car slides more readily with a shorter rear end, which is key to its handling.

    Yeah, its difficult with 2 cars that are so different. A old NASCAR is pretty crappy in turns, they are not made for that. But on the straights he just pulls away, so you never get really close enough to pass him in a turn. It can only work with a bit of help from others or if he screws up. But its a somewhat funny race anyway - with cars like a Fiat 500 racing against a NASCAR or your Cortina. He can drive 120 km/h if he is lucky - must be a bit frustrating.

    I bought one of these at the dealer's auction in Tyler Texas back in 1975 for $140. They just weren't worth anything and Texans liked big cards. My dad and I bought and sold used cars and this was one of my favorites but he made me sell it. Said English Fords were POS. I picked up a Europa S2 after that. Who would have thought Lotus Cortinas would bring the prices we see today but they are one of the coolest cars ever. I eventually graduated to air cooled 911s and never went back.

      @MichaelsVintageRacing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is amazing what a lot of the cars from that era are worth these days. Cortinas were relatively late to the party, too. I suppose the upside is the value will incentivize people to keep the surviving cars around 🙂

      @@MichaelsVintageRacing I agree, I always expected Europas to become expensive classics and they have only gone up at the normal inflation rate. Pretty soft, price wise. Ditto S1, S2, and S3 Esprits but they seem be appreciating now. I love Esprits but they are not a great car like my 911s. The 911s are reliable and will still wipe up the Esprits at the track. However, the Esprit's styling is really cool. If I could have any Lotus that I passed up it would be either an 11 or a monocoque Elite/Coventry Climax. Probably the only racecars that are prettier than the 11 is the Lola T-70 or Porsche 904. Still, ACBC was one of the greatest and I probably have every book on him and the Lotus Cortina is one of his greatest collaborations.
