The Evolution of Hemmings' Video and UpShift at Pebble Beach Car Week!
Over the past three years, Hemmings has delved deeply into video and live events. This journey began in 2021 with a comprehensive revamp of their main TH-cam channel (@hemmingsmotornews) and was followed by the revival of the Musclepalooza live event series. To say things are going swimmingly would not be an overstatement.
In this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ Podcast, host Mike Musto chats with Hemmings Creative Director Dan Stoner. They discuss Hemmings' latest and upcoming video productions, as well as an exciting event set to take place during this year's Pebble Beach Car Week in Monterey, California.

The Story of Dan Stoner’s 1952 Henry J. on the Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ!

Dan Stoner, Hemmings Creative Director, is no stranger to project cars. From his Stoner-T with its blown HEMI, to a killer little T-bucket, a flat bottom drag boat, and of all things, an Edsel, some would say that Mr. Stoner is indeed, and automotive masochist. Case in point, a 1952 Henry J that once belonged to his dad, and that Dan has now taken under his wing for a restoration and rebirth if...

Speedkore: Redefining What's Possible

Being 6'8" with the seat all the way back it is easier to get in and out of a 2 door car with a big door. On a 4 door, you have to basically fall in since the since the seat is back behind the B Pillar when it's all the way back. With a two door don't have that issue, you just slide into the seat.

38:29 the problem is that you are not the person manufacturers want to sell to. They want to sell the cheapest to manufacture vehicle to people who have been conditioned to finance a new phone every year because the new one has one more feature that they have survived just fine without all their lives. As far as they are concerned you can help prop up the used vehicle market helping them justify ridiculous prices on the new ones.

@9:00 So thankful it isn't a stinkin crossover! @15:45 The Lucid is insane, but yeah the pass is quite forgettable compared to a car making the same WHP just going faster and faster and faster as an ICE motor starts to gain steam. @18:00 The High Voltage event is one I wish we had been able to experience. @20:50 Absolutely a muscle car. Also, remember the old Slant 6 rivalries vs the V8s in the 60s. There are still 6 > 8 guys out there. @24:00 Looking forward to a chance to drive it. My mind was opened after my first chance behind the wheel of a P90D. Tesla needs to release the S with the body and brake package from their Nordschleife test cars 🔥 @31:00 500ish hp with an 8 or 10 speed transmission and AWD is going to be a rocket for most people. @32: Bryan, YES. Give me regular gauges, I don't want a sea of fingerprints lol. @33:00 Absolutely a manual <3 @35:00 I wonder if they'll bring one about later since the STLA Large Platform is supposed to support a hybrid option. Really enjoyed this episode. I started going to SEMA in '98, 3 years after Terry did. It was very different then - much smaller but it still seemed huge. No South Hall and of course no West Hall. People dressed up a lot more - lots of guys walking around in suits and it seemed much more business-oriented. Influencers didn't exist and the media presence was much smaller for sure. The last 3 years have been very interested. After no show in 2020, 2021 was a shadow of the earlier shows, with lots of blank spaces and not nearly as many attendees. Last year was better and this year was well-attended again but definitely missing something with the Big 3 gone (Ford has been gone 2 years now, I think). One thing I notice with the consolidation in the industry (Holley now owns about a zillion brands), the number of individual company booths, particularly in the Central Hall, continues to shrink. Look at those big rotating orbs above the Holley booth with all those brands listed and you realize that there are probably 15-20 companies that no longer have their individual booths there - they're all nominally covered in one. The same with the conglomerate that owns Edelbrock/TCI, etc. After 25 years, I still get excited about going every year though. A must-do for me every single year....

I've see the Shifters documentaries, which are really interesting to watch, but their claim to reintroducing traditional rods back into vogue left me surprised at this claim. When 50's Rock n Roll had all but disappeared in the USA, it had a strong underground following in Europe, and particularly in Britain. By 1977 Rock n Roll and Rockabilly was once again mainstream, with a huge national scene. The kids ultimate accessory for the scene was a 50's USA car, and around the late 80's the traditional 50's Hot Rods started to appear in numbers of the Rat Rod ilk, not expensive Street Rods. The late 1980's saw lots of youth from the USA coming to Britain and Europe to experience our Rockabilly scene, and were enthralled at what they were seeing I.E traditional Hot Rods with a its own fashion to go with it (the fashion style of the Shifters was already established in Britain before it appeared in the USA). Other European countries had youth into the Rockabilly scene who were also driving traditional rods. The youth in the USA jumped on the bandwagon a little late. However, as the cars were all in the USA, and you had a forgotten tradition, it did take off eclipsing the UK and European scene hugely. Although film is difficult to come by, because in those days it was basically 9mm cine cameras, and who carried one of those around, I have found film to show you what I mean. 0.46 secs in th-cam.com/video/DkQe3whRMMI/w-d-xo.html 0.21 secs in th-cam.com/video/45aLbrcs7yc/w-d-xo.html 0.35 secs in th-cam.com/video/xavvE9SEoP0/w-d-xo.html
