Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is located in the Palakkad district of Kerala, India, and extends into parts of Tamil Nadu. It lies within the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. The reserve covers an area of approximately 643 square kilometers and includes a mix of evergreen and deciduous forests, grasslands, and bamboo thickets.
Parambikulam is home to a diverse array of wildlife. The reserve is renowned for its significant tiger population, as well as leopards, elephants, gaurs (Indian bison), and several species of deer such as sambar and spotted deer. It is also a haven for bird watchers, with over 250 species of birds, including the great hornbill, Malabar pied hornbill, and various species of eagles, owls, and woodpeckers.
The reserve boasts a rich variety of plant life, including numerous species of trees, shrubs, and medicinal plants. The forest canopy is dominated by teak, rosewood, and sandalwood trees, some of which are centuries old. The Parambikulam Teak Plantation is famous for having the world's largest and oldest teak tree, known as "Kannimara."
