We had an elkhound in the 1990s that my father rescued from a local pound. He was a great pet in a lot of ways - cute, friendly and gentle. However, he needed a lot of exercise, he wasn’t very obedient and would run off sometimes (we probably didn’t train him enough), and he barked A LOT. Plus, he would shed plentifully.

Elkhound meaning Moose Dog in Norwegian. They are bred to hunt and stall these large beast of 800kg (1763 pounds). And they will protect their owners to the death. Great dogs. Super social dogs, likes to allways be arround their family or the neighbors kids. I grew up with 2 in my neighborhood.

Elkhound pups are the cutest. We were blessed to have two in our lives. Loved them.

We had two Elkhounds. The male, Grener, was the smartest dog I've ever known. Hussy was the sweetest. Both great dogs.

We had 2. They make great pets especially in cold climates.

Looks like a great litter =) Awesome family dogs as you well know, large personalities and lots of their own will and determination! Bred for inedependently finding scandinavian moose in the forest and barking at them and annoying them so the hunter can sneak up. Just the most loyal and quirky dogs you'll ever find!

So stinking cute!! My boyfriend's family currently has 8 elkhounds (4 family - mom, dad, brother, and sister; 4 adoptees/rescues - 1 boy, 3 girls). They are a crazy bunch but are absolute sweethearts, and have helped to lessen my fear of large dogs

I had an Elkhound Sasha and didn't even realize it looks like the mother in your video..we lost her on Halloween 2 yrs ago she was the best guard dog, drunks 2 in the morning couldn't get past her(she was 13-14 yrs)want another.

Of course Norwegian Elkhounds are trainable! You have to get on the same wave length with them. They're extremely bright and want to learn new things all the time. Rewards work better than punishments. Lavish them with praise and keep them busy with active jobs and they're the happiest dogs on the planet. Super affectionate, too. My very favorite breed.

My boy Baldurdash heard your puppies whimpering and started barking at them. He's my fourth moosedog, and he's the best buddy you could ask for. One thing about all four, they can read your moods and feelings, they know when you're not feeling well, even before you are aware you're getting sick, and they want to take care of you. When my Mom was inher final illness, one of her caregivers would bring her infant daughter to work, left the little girl in her car seat in the recliner chair in Mom's room. The Elkhound we had at that time would hop into the recliner alongside the little girl and cuddle with her, as if to say, "She is part of my pack."

Grew up with a rescued elkhound and then got a puppy 9 years ago. Kindest souls I’ve ever met (unless you’re a rodent or goose)

My elk hound Freya is so loving and smart. Smart enough to know when she can and can't ignore me 😄 and her face is so expressive. From absolute joy to practically rolling her eyes when I try to get her to move out of my spot.

They are smart dogs. Ours figured out how to open a door latch with his paw as a puppy. We theorized that he would read the newspaper when we were out of the house.

They are the best dogs. Some people might be concerned about their distinctive bark, but they don't mindlessly yap. An Elkie will give a different bark for friends and family vs. the bark they give for stranger danger. I've had Elkies my entire life, I can't recommend them highly enough. The greatest of the great.

I have had 7 elkhounds over the years. They are hands down the smartest and most fun companion! They protect their territory, are trustworthy in your home once they figure it out, energetic but happy being home with your family, playful. I think what people need to know about having an elkhound. Is they a part of your family. They need to be treated like a valued member of the family. You mentioned them being independent, and they really are. When raising an elkhound it’s quid pro quo ! Love your vids!

I have a Keeshond and she is the best dog ever! I would love to add an Elk Hound to the mix.

1:16 Note the part in the bitch's fur above the base of her tail. The wagging tail naturally parts the hair and forms a "nest" for the tail when she carries it over her back. People ask me what's wrong with my boy's coat and he flips the tail up and starts wagging it furiously demonstrating how it happens.

My family had a norwegian elhound lab mix when I was a child in Michigan and we moved to Southern Ks . It is very warm in the summer. She adapted well. She lived for 17 years.
