I love both Sophie and Michelle, and have been following them online for years - it should be needless to say, but this episode was PERFECT for me! Insightful, funny, and resembling a much needed warm hug during the cold season. Can’t wait to see where this already fantastic podcast is going next! Also, thanks for reminding me to pre-order Michelle’s new book - for those of you that read this and haven’t checked Michelle Elman’s work out yet, RUN, don’t walk to your nearest bookseller’s. 🫶🏻

I would say just because I know this is the first episode and you're just finding your feet, the audio was super quiet (had to turn it up to full volume on my earphones to hear on public transport which is not an issue I usually have). This once again makes clear to me that it wasn't normal for a child/teen to be talked into an eating disorder by saying mentioned stuff (you'll never get a bf, you're ugly etc.) When I opened up about my ED and said that I needed help (which really wasnt easy for me but teachers started calling), my mom just responded "well, at least it kinda worked, cant be so bad then" So glad to be out of this household, ngl 💀💀💀

I can agree so much this with this. I feel personally that the two sort of overlapped in this season the whole premise of a society which chooses to focus on the positives and overlook the negatives and the conversation about disability and accessibility. There are MANY things in society like this that people dont wanna make a fuss about or dont think its a big deal when in all actuality speaking up about it would benefit SO many people. Honestly seeing the protest scene was beautiful because it was about having each others backs most importantly, and finally looking at the problems people keep overlooking out of pure ingorance or laziness.

I remember being on tumblr but also pinterest and weheartit at the time and looking at all these romanticized photos of young, thin girls smoking or holding a cigarette in an underlit bathroom/gas station with smudged makeup and thinking to myself 'wow I also want to look like that'. I was 13/14 at the time (!) only years later I realized that it was all so messed up

I heard tumbler had ceased to exist so I stopped using it. This video made me want to go back and see if my account is still alive! I was 41 in 2014 and used Tumblr to support my Etsy shop so my feed is probably utterly dull to anyone in their 20's now. 😂 The Pro-ana thing never affected me, but I did dabble with 'fitspo' Tumblr and that woke up my internalised ableism and in turn gave me an unhealthy relationship with exercise. I LOVED the mid 90's. I was a full on metal head studying Music Technology. 😊 I think now the 2014 Tumblr people are that bit older and lived through the pitfalls, then we could also take the opportunity to have a presence there to monitor for the resurgence of the bad stuff.

It's genuinely shocking to me looking back at photos of myself from when I was DEEP in this era (15-17). I wasn't tiny but not the large size I am now, but at the time I saw myself as 'massive' and did horrible things to myself that I found on tumblr. I really convinced myself that I was such an outcast because of my size/looks, but when I see those photos, I just look like an average teenager, and really similar to the people around me! Ties really well with your post about looking back on old photos as punishment - when your body image isn't at it's best, you simply cannot percieve what you actually look like. Edited to add: I suspect the 2014-ish era will morph into an aesthetic preference like the 50's. The actual era was NOT GOOD overall, but people can pull the good out of it?

Hey Sophie, really enjoyed the vid, interesting discussion about bringing back the aesthetics of mid 00's grunge. I think that if we brought back the aesthetic with a modern twist it would be ok, and I think that for those younger growing up in it, they would bring that modernity because it's what they know rather than us folk who are older reliving it, if you get me. However ED related content just shifted it never disappeared so I don't know if you could fully eradicate it from any "trend". Like I was a kid in the 90s and that was focused heavily on late 60s and 70s aesthetics and although we didn't have the twiggy era, we did of course have heroin chic so it existed but in a different way. Part of the problem is always going to be how these things are marketed, as you said it is not being grown at grass roots level, in the way that for me in my teens, emo's goths and Ned culture grew up from the streets, so that is different, but it also means it's less likely to have staying power, so the trend will shift again, hopefully not allowing time for the toxicity to really take hold. I could go on for hours, this is a novel, I apologise but I enjoyed this discussion. Thanks for the work you put in, super appreciate the vid.

And just to point out at least 3 of the band members (if not more) are actually OG band members (I can pin point to 2 Amos the bass player and Paul the Lead electric guitar player) as for the rest of the members including the backup singers (most of them... There are 4 backup singers and 3 of them I think if not all 4) have been with her since the Red tour... The only new member per Taylor's own introduction of her is the keyboard player who started on THIS tour.

As a history graduate who has also recently been diagnosed with an eating disorder, this video was right up my street! Like you I used to be deep in the fitness world but since starting to escape I have been looking more at what history can show us about seemingly modern day phenomenon's. For example in many societies if a woman was fatter than her husband this was frowned upon because it was assumed women were stealing their husbands food and not caring for him correctly.

Making such a hefty topic fun an digestible isn't easy, so well done! 👏 I'd definitely advise you to invest in a clip-on mic to maximise the audio quality.
