Stored for 64 years - will this Hornby Dublo loco run?
มุมมอง 2592 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I’m working on a 1950s Hornby Dublo EDL 18 loco. This was purchased new in the 1950s by a young railway enthusiast and was put into storage in 1960. This original owner passed away recently and it was found in his attic by a relative. It was advertised on New Zealand’s TradeMe auction site and I won the auction. The question was if it would actually run, hence this video

    Thanks for the comment. Yes I have heard varying accounts both good and bad regarding furniture polish. The bees wax seems to have done a good job on this occasion at least. The loft layout sadly no longer exists - as I’m heading towards retirement I felt it would be wise to sell the big house and find a smaller place. I’m still looking at how to get a layout into my new house so I’ll definitely make a video of anything that develops

    The loco looked like the Merchant Navy Class of the Southern Railway in England. Were they Bulleid Pacifics ( being named after the chief engineer designer Bulleid) tho by the look of the locomotive s driving wheels they werent of the unusual design sported by the Merchant Navy Class. So the shipping Line Elder Dempster bringing bananas to the UK. for appreciative customers. Like the Blue Funnel line ( Liverpool again 😮) which brought the first refrigerated / frozen meat from Argentina to the UK

    " Elders " probably abbreviation of the shipping line Elder Dempster a Liverpool Shipping line. Elder Dempster names being Scottish - alot of Scots moved to Liverpool - an area of Liverpool being the Scotland District. The significance of Liverpool being Hornby Dublo was a Liverpool Company. Binns Road where Hornby Dublo , Meccano and Dinky cars were made. With reference to the motor the development in those far off days, was the Ringfield Motor. Wheelspin - very authentic if theres 12/ 13 coaches..

    • @deepadassanayake7798
      @deepadassanayake7798 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment Dave. Both locos have smoke units although I tend to take out the element when running just to reduce the chance of loco body warping. The uprights and station roof are stored underneath the platforms on the Hornby set. The Tri-ang Hornby set may have been set up differently by a previous owner I guess. Kind regards, Deepa

      @@deepadassanayake7798 Cool, just saw a loco - just the loco - on ebay without a smoke unit for 180 quid! I have my original engine and coaches from a kid, I have a complete set and a few other engines and coaches from the sets.... bit crazy to be honest but I like them. I have a good number of other old locos - one thing I have found, the detail maybe less, the robustness is more, the crawl might be less but after 60 or more years they still operate. One thing is for sure, for my son I bought a 'duck' - just a gwr panier - unlike the old engines that work this will only make a circuit of the track backwards, going forward it always falls off the curves. I will stick with the old ones.

    An oil tanker train would not have a brake van, the derailment, second tanker from the rear, in the red derailed and the high drag at the rear caused the leading wagons to derail. Kato make a special track which automatically re-rails derailed stock as the train passes along

      Thank you for the comment. We lived in the UK in the 1960s and I don’t recall ever seeing an AL1, which is a shame. You never think of searching out these things when aged 9! And the Beatles’ rooftop concert took place on the same day that my Dad had a suit made at his tailor in Savile Row - unfortunately we were there early in the day so didn’t find out it was even occurring, let alone the significance of number 3 Savile Row. Kind regards, Deepa

  • @cyclist3969

    The serrated wheel tyres of the Triang locomotive are the cause of most of the banshee howl, the Dublo has a single motor-driven axle (3 axles non-powered) with rubber traction tyres on the driven axleset Dublo engineers may have chosen to limit the drive to a single wheelset after issues with the Dublo EE1 diesel with two wheels with traction tyres which caused electrical pickup problems on the 2-rail version

    • @deepadassanayake7798
      @deepadassanayake7798 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment. There’s no doubt those knurled wheels are the culprit. I changed some of my other locos’ wheels to the later smooth wheels and that made a huge difference. However I thought I would keep these locos original. I’ve noted the same pickup problem on my D8017 2 rail Bo Bo. I improved this by adding current pickups on the two wheels that were fitted with traction tyres - I copied Fleischmann for this, as they had been fitting such pickups to many traction tyred locos. It definitely made a difference, along with the addition of lead weights on the chassis. Kind regards, Deepa

My rear 2 bedrooms are yet to be finished off in my house so i might put them out there so ill have a 6 metre x 4 metres of space to work with. Im really in love with the zig zag railway that we have here in oz at Lithgow. NSW. I want to work out how im going to run them all but shouldnt be a problem. Im doing all of them in dc too. Im thinking of a three layered 2 track system as in up and down lines and a couple of shunting yards and some stable yards to store trains like they do in reality. Then im going to join the 3 tiered tracks with the zig zag effect so i can run all 12 trains at 1 time with 12 different controllers and then swap and change trains in between the top middle and bottom tracks. Im going to use steel tracks on the climb side so the magnahesion works in my favour Or just might have to do some shunting to get desiredmcarriages to the top of the layout. Hi John. Thanks for your comment. Yes I thought it was pretty good too. This cost around NZD 500 in August 2021. Cheers Deepa

    Nice sets. I bought the same loco badly damaged off ebay for a few ponuds, restored it to pristine condition (with a fully serviced motor and deep cleaned chassis/wheels) and looks stunning, as well as runs like new. Worth some money now but will keep!

      Hi Nicholas. Many thanks for your comment which illustrates just how durable these old locos are - my first Railway Children loco was similar to the one you have described and it’s a great feeling when you manage to restore it back to its original condition. I sold that loco once I obtained these two sets and like you I intend keeping them. Kind regards, Deepa

      Thank you for your kind comment. These older locos are a pleasure to work on - the motors are reliable and you can easily access all the components in the chassis. New Hornby locos can be difficult to service, let alone repair. Kind regards, Deepa

      Hi Jim. Many thanks for your comment. These locos definitely run much faster than their real life counterparts! And since I haven’t really matured much since childhood I still love seeing model trains at speed. Not sure if you have seen my “Mallard Flies” video but that shows what happens at the end of the long straight if a loco is doing 165mph. Kind regards, Deepa

    Very interesting, most recent coaching stock from about 1970 onwards benefits from metal (insulated) wheels and pinpoint axles, that makes a lot of difference in making a train easier to pull. The issue with the Hornby Dublo range was that the 2-Rail wheelsets were effectively nylon (plastic) versions of the original 3-Rail metal wheelsets, this meant the axles were fully rounded and the friction was much higher. Obviously such a long train moving around reasonably tight radius curves will weigh a lot, Meccano effectively introduced the Ringfield motor in most of their locomotives to improve their haulage strength and power as their rolling stock was relatively heavier. Not sure why Meccano Ltd never resolved this as their French range (Hornby Acho) used pinpoint axles and the running qualities are much better. I used to show how much Hornby Dublo "Super Detail" rolling stock weighed, by asking visitors at shows to put one finger on the top of the first carrriage on a train and ask them to try moving it on my layout without an engine - most people were surprised how heavy it was.

      Hi David. Many thanks for your detailed comments. Yes I completely agree and so as not to over-burden the locos chose mostly later coaches with metal rimmed wheels, although some coaches on that train were older ones with plastic wheels (with pinpoint axles though). I have definitely found Dublo coaches with nylon wheels have a fair bit of friction both in the axle boxes and the wheels themselves. There’s no doubt they are a more difficult load to haul but their weight does mean they are less likely to derail. I specifically bought my house for the large attic so I could have long straights and fourth radius curves. Having retained most of my childhood traits as an adult, the aim has always been to run long trains and fast trains. I have discovered it’s not easy to run long trains at high speeds but Dublo coaches are markedly the best at that, of the UK brands. Fleischmann coaches are superb at high speed running but that’s another story entirely. In line with a number of model railway enthusiasts that I am acquainted with, I also have some fast cars (also some slow ones). My 1989 MX5 has already been shown in a video and I might include some others in future if there is interest. Kind regards, Deepa
