I was way too young to understand the reference at the time. I was confused why they replace Lisa Simpson. The Brady Bunch Variety Hour aired before I was born.

One little thing I noticed that the writers nailed perfectly. During "The Peppermint Twist" the sax part sounded like the saxophonist was bored, and just going through the motions. Just how the covers of songs sounded on those 70's variety shows.

If the 1970s variety shows were written as well as the Simpsons parody version, they never would've went off the air.
