All of the frustrations, decadence and horrors of our culture that we see and lament daily are merely a veil that covers the deeper nature of our spiritual condition before God. Even so He loves us and has redeemed us. What we see daily is like a video remnant of what we have been saved from, like "film at eleven..." The good news is that the day is over. The battle is won, yet the story remains. Struggle no more, choose this day whom you will serve. When will we finally grasp this?

It is a song for Lent. I had imagined God's sorrow at the unbelief and unrepentant hearts of his people under Abraham's promise, and the continuation of that under the new covenant. So great a salvation, yet trivialized and ignored. And what can the "faithful" do but sleep while He toils even now under a continuing burden of prayer, interceding for us.
