This was a day trip I just took with my close friend Pat Sayer & brother in law Rob Jones. We made a whole video but this is the first cut of one of the harder obsticles that has a bypass, the Soup Bowl. This was all shot on the most famous 4x4 trail in the world, the Rubicon!

This was my buddy Larry's 1st run through the rubicon. We went from Loon lake to spider lake then buck Island, turned around at the springs and ended the video at our camp site at Buck Island. It was a great trip with great friends.
Chocolate Thunder KOH 2011

This run up Chocolate thunder was at the end of our KOH trip in 2011. My Green 404 was running pretty bad and in need of a tune up and I was having some over heating issues, but I edited out any downtime that I had and we still ate up the Chocolate Thunder!
Unimog 416 pulls jeep out

I told him either your coming out or your front axle is. Ok, so the kid in red tried to pull this jeep out in a 1/2 ton chevy and he got stuck because the snow turned slick really quick so he couldn't get the strap off the pull rig. I hooked up to both of them with the Unimog and did a half ass attempt of pulling him out. I got temporarily stuck and then got just enough forward to get the strap...

I love how every time it snags a rock it doesn't get caught on it, the rock gets caught on the unimog. xD

It's all gearing, having the ability to have a 350:1 1st gear ratio with High clearance diffs with Portal axles and gear reduction hubs is where it's at!
Why?
You should go off-roading sometime, and then you might understand why. Off roading is a great way to connect with the nature, have fun, and spend time with friends and family. You really should try it sometime before you knock it.

Utterly amazing vehicle. The boulders that the truck couldn't crawl over it simply shoved aside as it constantly crept forward almost effortlessly. Props to the expert driver, as well.
Is the 404 chassis the best for offtrail work?
Offtrail? If you are referring to the Unimog only and you want to know what chases/model is best for Offroad rock crawling like I do I would say yes the 404 is the best chases. There is more work that needs to be done to it because most models don't come stock with power steering. If you increase the tire size you also run into low gearing issues. Crawler boxes like I have in this unit are Extremely hard to come by. If you want a model for work purposes it depends on what work you want to do, but this model is probably not the best option.
@@dansflb thanks for reply. i want a rig for exploring Norway and Sweden. 404 is under the 3500kg class so no truck license needed. the power steering and diesel upgrade id want todo. im on the lookout for a doka cabin version, is the om606 turbo the best option?

Are there any suspension mods done to this?
Minor suspension mods: Softer coil springs, and longer shocks. Other than that this is stock suspension.
I had a 63 404s but I like the doka 4 door can take more people with
bad ass!

Mine has a Mercedes Unimog Crawler box which is an added reduction gear box. They are hard to find online, but they are amazing for rock crawling. You will pay around $2k if you can find one and they will bring your lowest gear to 350:1

I Love Land Rovers, and have seen them do some amazing stuff, but Unimogs are a different level to every other 4x4, particularly the smaller models like this 404. It is no just all the locking diffs, amazing axle and chassis articulation, it is also the super low ratio gears and brilliant approach, departure and ramp brake over angles that allow it to crawl in a controlled manner over these damaging obstacles without get caught on rocks or having to use too much power. Class machines, and this one from the 1950s!!!!

Originally an Unimog should be able to drive where a horse could walk. But this one drives, where goat get stuck. Crazy!

Mostly standard as far as offroad capability. They both have softer coil springs and longer shocks. The gas tanks and battery boxes have been moved out of harms way. Everything else is mainly cosmetic.

Far cry from a stock 404.
Offroad capability wise, it’s not far at all! The only things enhancing it Offroad are softer coil spring rates, a longer gas shock, full hydro to make it steer easier and Beadlocks to keep the tires on and a cage for safety. Other then those small modifications which are nothing compared to your average Jeep, Toyota etc. The main 404 is all still stock, engine, transmission, axles, transfer case, gears, etc. Literally if someone bought a stock 404 and just swapped the springs for a softer rate spring they would have followed right behind me. Well with a lot of arm pump by the end of the trail 😉

Wow ,nothing beats a UNIMOG. It`s a True Legend. Just try and find one for sale.
My old man had a 406, used to drive from Uk to Germany regularly to pick stuff up, never failed as it also never failed in the rough. But his rough wasn't as rough as this! Unimogs, the best...
unimogs dont need fancy suspension upgrades to do what they can do, unlike other so called "off road trucks"
Never listen to a spotter....just know your vehicle and your corners.
I should pull the overload springs out of mine.
