Ffestiniog Railway Bygones 2023
I had the privilege of working closely with the Ffestiniog Railway film team to help cover the recent Bygones weekend.
The FR’s own film which I contributed into is here:
th-cam.com/video/Eb4sZv5wCL8/w-d-xo.html
As you might imagine a lot of material hit the cutting room floor as it would have made their film far too long.
So rather than do something similar but different I decided to make an aerial only version.
I make no apology for the Birds Eye View opener as Eddie Mirzoeff’s films were a great inspiration to me.
Of course, they had Sir John Betjemen to narrate but here we have music as all you'd hear from above is whirring propellors.
It’s infinitely more fun hanging out the door of a helicopter but modern drones are far more versatile.
The aircraft I used for this has a three camera system, two of which are telephoto so although some of the shots appear very close, the drone certainly wasn’t.
Best enjoyed in 4k on a decent size screen…

Kilver Court Viaduct
มุมมอง 179 หลายเดือนก่อน
This viaduct in Shepton Mallet is the Famous Charlton Viaduct of the Somerset & Dorset Railway. We did this years ago as a training exercise for one of my cameraman as, back then, our 'standard' drone was over a metre across and required a 2 man crew. The gardens there are beautiful and the viaduct is being well maintained by them but, sadly, the trains are long gone.
Rhiw Goch Crossing

Some years ago the Ffestiniog Railway needed another passing loop as there was such a prolific train timetable. Rhiw Goch was put in and is only accessible by train.
The Square - a personal tribute.

April 8th 2018, saw the retirement of Ffestiniog Railway Double Engine, Earl of Merioneth. Built in 1979 by Boston Lodge works which, at the time, was an outstanding achievement in the heritage railway sector. Not the prettiest of engines hence being affectionately known as The Square but she did everything that she was ever asked to do with a willing heart. She was retired to make way for a ne...

A kite buggy item that we did for a Welsh children's show a few years ago. It is all about wind power and seeing how fast the presenter could go on the two seater versus the single seater. We built this rather unique two seat machine especially for film and tv use.

Not rubbish at all ! Great shots. You have a very brave camera Steve . . . I didn't mind the shape of the Loco. I didn't see what those white tyres were for though. The "colour" didn't fit in with anything and was a bit too dominant.

Thank you Chris. Interestingly the end piece with Tim was recorded a long time away from the main film and I just put it on there for fun. However, a lot of us thought that retiring the Earl was rubbish but Jimmy Spoons is a great loco. The design was a great call by Paul Dukes to quickly solve a motive power shortage and is very much part of FR history. I was using a DJI Osmo on a selfie stick for this film and Rhiw Goch crossing one - thank fully it’s very slim and fits in small places! 😁

Excellent stuff. Glad to see you kept hold of your camera. Great to see a bit of the operations away from tan-y-bwch, and the best way to see down the side of the embankment walls.

Prices of the past editions are totally unrealistic and I think that only Governments; Air Forces or aeroespace companies can afford to buy JAWA today....unfortunately....
