first listen and i feel more presence of the dynamics in the U87, but the 219 is super smooth! Both are great!

I toggled between :55 and 1:17 about a dozen times to hear the same line back to back rapidly. The low midrange was the deciding factor for me. I went back and listened to the top end to see whether there might be some spittiness or high frequency zizz I associate with cheaper condenser mics. I was pleasantly surprised that although they sounded a bit different, both sounded great up high. I finally quit listening, positive mic #2 was the U87. Holy crap. The U87 has never been my *all time* favorite, but on average, it sounds really good for *most* sources. The Joly MK219 absolutely kicked its ass. I have a MK219 somebody gave it to me probably 15 years ago or so. I don't think I have ever used it. I am going to compare it to a U87 today to see how it stacks up in its stock form. I know Michael Joly is no longer modifying mics. Is there someone else still doing these mods in the U.S. for a reasonable fee? Are the mods something anyone with some soldering skills can do at home? Are the replacement parts easy to come by? Assuming the stock version isn't as good, I would love to send mine out or give it a shot myself. Great comparison! Thanks a ton for doing this!

I remember replacing the capsule and modifying the basket were the two main things that altered the sound. But then he also matched to 87 specs by ear, so theres that too, but im sure the first two mods would improve, but wouldnt necessarily make a 'clone' like what joly offered. But joly had his own neumann style capsules which he wouldnt produce anymore. OPR do similar mic mods in australia.

Why are they different takes? You know there can be so much unintended tonal variability in the voice, that it makes comparing mics via different takes kinda useless. Put the mics exactly next to eachother and multitrack record... itll be way more fairer. Unless you record super mega close, you can easily be in the sweetspot for both mics.

On Mike joly's website, he had audio sMples that were the same take, and he would switch between mics dozen times in a 60 second recording and there was no way to tell when it switched.
