Naish Hover Crossover 85L REVIEW
In this review I will test the Naish Hover Crossover 85L mid-length board to see how it feels and behaves.
A big THANKS to @VandenBergSurf & Naish Europe for making the board available for the test.
Of course I'll use my @F4FOILS F800/190 and my @duotone.wingfoiling SLS Slick (4.0) as the basis for the test.
Location Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands.
Wind 20-24 kts.

In this review I'm gonna take the @NorthWindsurfing Nova Pro 2025 wing to the water and see what it's all about. Wingfoiling is getting more and more popular these days and on the development side of things a lot has been happening. Normally I use their Leopard shark gloves with thin under gloves for windsurfing and wind foiling as they are less bulky and provide a better grip, but as I was using a boom with small diameter tube the ORCA’s were fine and they are pretty comfy. I have Mode (7, 5.5, 4.2) & Mode Pro (5.5). All of them have stitching problems at the leading edge (Struts are fine).They are basically falling apart at exactly the locations of the wings. I was recently informed by North that the product produced until Q2 of 2024 will have this issue due to the single stitching (?) instead of double stitchings.🤢😵‍💫 Do not get me wrong, I love Mode Pro the way it functions especially handing the gust and its low AR design. I absolutely agree to go winging without a leash. It is much better to not drag the board al across and if you crash you can just bodydragg back to the wing. But in these kind of crashes I must say it really doesn’t matter. If you fall like this without a leash the board will still continue in your direction and hit you and with a leash it might accelerate the board but it could also turn the board around and lose al it’s speed.

      @obvioustrash7833 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @windsurfcoach I was about to say the same thing. Even if you did not have a leash here, it would have gone straight into you. What I usually find is that there are 2 types of crashes with speed winging. Instace 1: Your mast/foil ventilates. This one is the one you dont have to worry about too much. What happens is that the flow of the water detaches from your mast/foil and drags air down your setup. This only happens when you are banked over and push it too far (happens less with longer chord and longer masts). Since you are banked over, you will go down, but also just land on your back and the crash will not be as brutal. Having a leash here is fine. Instace 2: You lift out of the water while going downwind. This is the worst one as its a very violent crash. You are sending your board downwind and as your speed increases, you get more lift from your foil. If you dont pay attention you might lift due to a gust/a bit of swell and your foil will breach. This will send you straight down at full speed and throw you over your board. Having a leash here is very dangerous and I have hurt myself a few times doing this (mostly foot in strap stuff, board to my shin once). I am going to stop using board leashes on inland lakes from now on and see how it goes. Will still use one in the ocean though unless its 3m+ waves. Also @Felix_drent when are we doing another session ;) Kr, Stephan

    When attempting speed, do you sail the same course as you would with a windsurf board? Or do you go more/less downwind? For instance, when on Ice with my wing, my track looks much, much more like an 'S' shape than when on water with a windsurf board. (I don't wing on water)

    • @Windsurfcoach
      @Windsurfcoach หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Fons, for me it's more or less the same like windsurfing. When the speed increases so does the drag of the foil so I'm looking for the angle where I have the best ratio power/drag and that's approximately the same as for windsurfing. I haven't done any ice winging yet but I can imagine when you're on ice the main drag will be the aerodynamic drag and not the drag of the gliders/skates so the approach will be slightly different. How fast do you go on the ice? Have fun and See you on the (frozen) water!!!

    Utter nonsense. You ll be super frustrated as the gear you needed is at home. If you only have an hour, pick something and sail, fair enough. But to load the car/van on the forecast alone is daft beyond belief. Sorry windsurf coach, this time you have it completely wrong. I am not saying you need all the gear, and if budget is an issue, stick to one board and just a few sails, but bring options. We all have busy lives; work and family responsibilities to juggle. When you have the time to sail you don’t want to bounce around on the wrong kit and call it learning…. That is simply an insult to yourself, as well as the family and work commitments that have been sidetracked so you get to windsurf when the conditions are on. For where i windsurf i look at MetOffice, BBC, XC weather, Windguru, Predict wind and they usually have wildly differing forecasts so i go with a quiver and also windfoiling board / sails to be ready for anything. I think this works well. Better advice is to go even if the forecast is only 10 mph gusting 20 mph and hope it is better than forecast. That is the good thing about wind foiling that you can get a decent session quite easily 10 to 15 mph but on the other hand you could find it is less than 10 mph which could be hazardous getting back to shore. Anyway who wants to go out in feeble winds in winter under 10 Celsius unless you have surfable waves ? Different somewhere 25 C. Windsurfing is like the rock, paper, scissors game ; you maybe make a good guess about size and are planing easy for 20 minutes but the wind drops back a lot so you do light wind freestyle stuff thinking the wind will come back soon, but after 20 minutes you doubt the wind is going to pick up so then you go a metre bigger and you are no sooner out than the wind really picks up and you are maxed out and you wonder if you should change down but maybe it drops back again and after a while you decide you really need to go smaller and you can bet as soon as you have switched the wind will drop off again. So you usually do get a range of power to practice different stuff. But if you go with one sail and the window splits or something then you've wasted a session that you maybe booked a day off for or the sort of good wind that doesn't come that often

    Hi, I see that you swim with a position resembling the number 7, I swim similarly. However, I notice PWA riders who adopt a position resembling the number 4, with bent legs and their buttocks hanging as if they're sitting on a toilet. I tried this position, but it's not stable for me-the board wobbles and my legs get tired. Why do riders swim like that, and what are the benefits of this position?

    • @Windsurfcoach
      @Windsurfcoach หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Michal, this is already an old video so not very representative anymore. In this video I was still using free-race fin slalom sails, a foil ready light wind fin slalom board and short harness lines. Today I use dedicated foil slalom sails/boards/harness lines combined with smaller front wings which is a huge difference. When going for the speed runs (as they always do during PWA slalom foil races) you want to have your sail as upright as possible. Combine that with being really powered up then you must get your center of gravity outboard and low.(figure 4 shape/ Turkish toilet stance) So that's what they are doing. When the winds gets lighter and when tracking more upwind you'll see that we'll be standing more upright (7 shape). With short harness lines it's not possible to get into a comfortable figure 4 position. That's the reason harness lines go as long as 50 inch nowadays. Besides that the 4 position is only comfortable when really powered up. Have fun and.... See you on the water!!!

    • @michal5869
      @michal5869 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Windsurfcoach Hi, thanks for the response! I noticed that when the mast is tilted about 15 degrees into the wind, I sail around 25% faster than when it’s upright. During competitions, I measured the angles, and competitors typically sail with angles between 15 and 30 degrees. My setup, at such a large angle, tends to lose speed rather than accelerate. Sam Ross demonstrates how to sail in the video "How to Go Faster on the Windfoil" and shows speed measurements. However, I classify his stance as a 7, while many people sail with their legs bent as if in a 4. This makes it very easy for the board to pop out of the water because its weight is reduced-just a moment of inattention is enough. I can’t imagine sailing like that for 30 minutes during a competition. Best regards!

    • @Windsurfcoach
      @Windsurfcoach หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@michal5869 I think you need to differentiate between COURSE RACING and SLALOM. In iQfoil you are using a 900cm2 frontwing with a foil that is setup to be powerful for the "slow" upwind parts of the race, which means that if you keep the foil flat (0 angle) at high speed you will have trouble keeping the foil in the water. By banking the foil over you will reduce the lift vector that is pointing upwards, hence it's easier to go fast while maintaining control. You'll see that upwind you want to be more of a 7 with shorter harness lines and at full speed downwind you want to be more of a 4 with longer harness lines. In PWA you can choose a smaller (less draggy) foils (front wings around 350-400cm2 are no exception) which means you need to be fast to have enough lift/power to stay on the foil (especially during the jibes). In this case you NEED to keep the bank angle smaller to have enough power for control and to stay on the foil. Also remember that the PWA is slalom. Hence full speed downwind. The figure 4 stance will put all the weight into your harness and through the mast foot onto your board which means you will have more leverage to control your foil when traveling at high speed. If you need to bank your foil in PWA you could have been faster using a smaller foil.... So the figure 4 stance absolutely helps with control during the downwind runs but you will need to adjust your harness lines (longer) and transfer your weight via the harness onto your boom/mastfoot. Have fun and... See you on the water!

      @@johnnoble1967thank you! The video was the first time I used the gloves . The slipping of the gloves was the only problem I encountered in that session. The slipping can be reduced by using the gloves with the seal as high as possible on your arm and squeezing all the air out (vacuum). Also using an elastic band over the gloves on your wrist might prevent slipping (but I haven’t tried that yet). Personally I have no problems with the grip. If you have problems with the grip you could consider the Leopard Sharks which were my favorites at the end of the season. They have a narrower fit (less bulky and hardly slip) and have no lining, so a better grip and last the longest. If it gets colder you can use thin under gloves for the Leopard Sharks. The standard thin under gloves help a little, but I’ve been told that there will be better under gloves this year as well. For first and third windsurfer the main problem is their railing. They are unable to have the board constantly railed, but instead try to turn flatly using weight back to sink the tail to turn. First sailor needs to widen his stance and shift the back foot to the rail, as easilly can be seen in video. His weight is back because that´s the only way he can turn, learning carved rail turns is his goal, all other techniques are follow ups after he can rail. Third sailor is a little better in railing, but doesn´t know how to prolong his railing threw the eye of wind onto the new tack, as seen in video, he straightens out his curve. Both should do some rail carving drills before working on minor details. Like put their back foot in the leeward back strap from windward side and rail the board with now much better angle of attack and less force needed, meaning a lot of less weight on their back leg. Then go for some s-turns from broad reach to downind and back. First you have to get the fundamentals right before engaging into details.
