    I think the community would benefit tremendously if the testing data from the spike house were released. The Germans could engineer the crap out of it.

      as much as I'd love to have this info, the sport is different enough now that we would do better to renew testing and work together as a community on this.

    Not explicitly related to any particular talking-point in the video, but here’s something I just thought of: I think it could be a good idea for LRO’s to share resources for data-collection. By developing and exchanging survey and spreadsheet templates, we can create a more systematic approach to gathering and analyzing player feedback. This collaboration would not only provide us with a more cohesive understanding of player experiences and preferences-in all aspects of the sport, and across all demographics-but would also be educational for community leaders by equipping them with the right language and the right objectives for growing their own communities.

    This whole conversation was touching my heart and love for the sport of roundnet. As a german player, i feel like we might be at a little different point, as roundnet startet to growth some years later here. Thanks for all the insights, so we can try doing better and have a bright future of roundnet. Kinda feel like the next big chance for players to easy accept some big changes will be right after the world championship next week. Can't wait to cheer in the german crowd in London. PS: I bring a nail clipper to worlds so we can rise some money from Preston 😅

      There are a lot of differences in how Roundnet is growing in Germany, with lots of different strengths and tools at your disposal (I have loved learning from other countries). Changing rules after a big Roundnet event is great, but I don’t see a reason to restrict the timing of change if we need it and have the energy to try changes. I would have loved more changes before the world championship but unfortunately we didn’t have the right tools to make that happen globally - in part due to a lack of available time and energy I put into advocating for change. But hopefully we built enough tools for future changes to be tried internationally more rapidly.

    IRF -> Rules and Testing Committee -> Commissions testing including trial tournament in a number of countries (with big ball) -> Feedback form from players -> IRF reviews, realises big ball is great -> IRF proposed motion to NGBs to soft introduce big ball for part of season -> NGBs vote in favour. Rinse and repeat for any and all rules seen as helpful to the development of the sport. NGBs are powerful, useful and vital to the survival and future viability of Roundnet. People organisation is what will make this sport bounce.

    I think making changes more often would be a great idea especially if the tournaments with rule/equipment changes were just as legitimate. Personally one of the reasons I haven't participated in, say, the Sunday Mammoth tournaments is partially because the tournaments don't "matter". I'm not sure if it would be a good idea but if you could gain points by playing Mammoth tournaments/other experimental tournaments in the same way that you could gain points through normal tournaments, you could maybe get a lot more people trying out the rule/equipment changes and could iterate faster.

    Who is he thinking of when he says top players are bad at setting and hitting?

    • @bdantowitz
      @bdantowitz 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is a weird one because Preston isn’t really tuned into the game right now to watch it. So I’ll make my best guesses based on the conversations we had. I think he has referred to Thomas’ setting (and though it was recorded in July, Thomas did miss many sets at Bang in August - ones that I’d call errors). And for hitting - I think his critique is on technique and only hitting hard - an older example being how Fred hits for power instead of placement. So anyone else hitting in this vein may be subject to his criticism.

    • @calvinsmith447
      @calvinsmith447 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@bdantowitz I can understand his reluctance to name-drop, but that’s a smaller sample size than his language suggested. I definitely don’t have a hard time believing he doesn’t watch a lot of roundnet

    • @mattcoleroundnet
      @mattcoleroundnet 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree that was a misguided comment on his part - Ben is likely right, I think Preston is thinking of players who just hit for power (ie me) - but either way, it's not really correct. That said, the point is true that it's much, much easier to be an effective hitter, even if just by ripping the ball and not thinking, than it is to be an effective defender.

    Great episode Ben! Haven't met Rohil but glad to hear some data and insight on current state of roundnet tourneys. Potential topic question: How can we get more adults to play or up their interest in their child playing Roundnet? Other niche sports that have taken off in the last few years like pickleball and disc golf have the advantage of adults and elderly players and fanbase. How can roundnet lean into that sector?
