Hi 👋 Felt-making is a traditional craft in Afghanistan, particularly among the Hazara community in regions like Bamiyan. This art involves creating felt, barak, kilim, carpets, and embroidery, each serving unique purposes. Bamiyan, a province rich in history, is home to eight historical sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage in Danger. In 2015, Bamiyan joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, aiming to promote and preserve its cultural heritage, including crafts like felt-making.  Given the cultural and historical significance of felt-making in Afghanistan, nominating this craft for UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list could be a vital step in its preservation and promotion. Such recognition would not only raise global awareness but also potentially enhance the economic well-being of local artisans and boost cultural tourism in the region. It’s worth noting that similar traditional crafts have been recognized by UNESCO in other countries. For instance, in 2012, the art of making Kyrgyz traditional felt carpets, Ala-kiyiz and Shyrdak, was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.  This precedent suggests that with proper documentation and international support, Afghan felt-making could also achieve such recognition, ensuring the preservation of this valuable cultural heritage for future generations.
