Part 3: sewing a reversible Halloween Thanksgiving Christmas quilted runner. Bag it.
This is part three of my peppermint forest runner series. I made this reversible. One side is Halloween to Thanksgiving themed. The other side is Christmas.
I had to adjust the sizing on each to make them match. The patchwork pumpkin Top had to be a little bit skinnier. The peppermint forest Christmas runner had to be widened a little bit with two green strips on the end. If I were to do this again, I'd make the tree block a bit bigger (enough to throw one more scrappy border block in) and that would have given me more room for the pumpkins to breathe.
I made the pumpkin runner a little bit bigger all around, since it gave me more freedom to trim to match after I put the two sides together. Since the Christmas runner was more detailed around the border, I couldn’t take any risks there.
Each top was custom quilted to batting with no backing. I did custom quilting to raw batting with no fabric back.
I then put the two right sides together, stitched all around, leaving a 5 inch or so opening. Then I trimmed the excess. And then turned it inside out. I hand stitched the 5 inch opening together. Lastly, I edge stitched the two pieces together around the perimeter maybe a half an inch inside the perimeter.
It’s a little bit puffy, but it’s really cute and I like the idea of having the one runner flow into a few holiday seasons
If I were to do this again, I just might make them separate, but this was a fun experiment. I might still bag it, but just to a single layer of fabric backing and skip the binding.

her version is too cute! I refused to buy more fabric so mine is a bit busy looking but customized to the recipient's favorite themes.

      Yes, I'll bear that in mind and thank you for commenting! I love using the gear button. I usually make it 2x faster because I want to "skim" and come back to the stuff I want to see again. Then I'll make it .75 to slow it down. Have you tried the gear button and do you like using it? Also, if there's something in the video you think could use more explanation, please let me know and I could make another video in more detail.

      I’m so glad you’re starting sewing. Yes you MUST have the presser foot UP before threading. When the foot is UP the tension discs are open. If the foot is down then the thread can’t make it to the right channels and you can not get proper tension.

    Hey! Thanks for your educational videos 😊. However, you should read this "Husgvarna 225, 215, 205" manual again, at least for winding. Your machine is model s215. However, the machine is exactly the same model as "Husgvarna 215, because in some market areas the letter s is added in front of the series of numbers. Here in Finland, the same instructions are included in models 225, 215 and 205, model number. the last two numbers tell how many different stitches the machine can make 25, 15 or 5. First; the user manual shows that the thread roll should be placed in the horizontal holder so that the thread unwinds from the roll in a counter-clockwise direction (it runs in the roll in such a way that if the thread is pulled from the roll towards you, the roll rotates downwards!). We have the user manual on page 9 in the top picture. Second; when winding the thread on the shuttle, the thread should follow the same route as when knitting through the needle to the bottom of the foot and only from there the winding to the guide, i.e. go down to the top and only then (wind clockwise like you did in the video👍). We see this in the user manual on page 10, the top picture, which is a little incomplete because the machine's foot and needle are not visible in the picture. The text says "pull the thread from the needle under the presser foot to the right to guide C", this guide "C" is marked in the picture and the picture also shows that the thread comes from below to the guide, from there to the bobbin, which is attached to the winding shaft and the shaft is locked in the down position. The thread therefore goes around the same route when winding as when sewing. The benefit of this is that when winding more yarn onto the bobbin, you never have to remove the yarn from the needle or the yarn path. This speeds up the knitting work and makes spooling easier during sewing 😊. That Swedish engineer is wise! However, if you want to wind the thread without having to wind it along the thread track and through the needle and under the foot, there is also a possibility for that. A Swedish engineer has thought of a solution for this too! Then the thread roll is placed on the vertical thread pin and the thread is transported from it to the winding bobbin through three guides, this is also explained in our instruction manual in the bottom picture on page 10. In this case too, the roller must rotate counter-clockwise! Why counterclockwise? I do not know! At least here in Finland, the machine comes with these instructions. I don't know if you have different instructions there 🤔? However, thanks for your educational videos, we are just learning how to use the machine here 😊. I just got a machine with model number 225 used here in Finland. Now I have to learn how to use Husgvarna from the very beginning, first of all I am a man and the last time I sewed with a sewing machine was more than 40 years ago 🤔. These videos of yours were really helpful and I really wondered about the difficulty of winding in your video! So I thoroughly familiarized myself with the user manual 🤔, and maybe solved the problem? Nice sewing there for you, your daughter and her friends, you can always learn something new when you take such an attitude👍. The translation work was provided by Google, so my comment may be difficult to understand! However, I hope that this report would be helpful at least for you 😊👍.

      Your advice is solid! Yes, always go back to the manual. It's amazing how you can see something new that you didn't see before. I will try that. Just a comment about which way to load the thread spool - I recently went to a class and was told, find the end that is rough (sometimes the spool end can be rough and jagged) and don't have the thread pass over the rough end! So, I think there is some case by case decisions that need to be made. But I have never gotten a clean winding of this particular bobbin so I will carefully read your comment and try again. If I have better luck, I will post a new video!

    • @BeatrisSews

      I got my hands on another machine. This gave me an opportunity to remake the bobbin video based on your excellent research. It worked perfectly! Please see the new video. I try method 1 and 2. I find method 1 a better product overall since it’s tight and smooth but I am noticing my tension is now off! I’ll have to play with that. I wonder if the tighter bobbin wind is creating more tension imbalance. In any event thank you for the extra work informing me and I’m excited to show the new video so people know how to wind the bobbin per the manufacturer’s user manual.

    A much more reliable way to sew curves is by clipping the inside curve to just inside the stitching line, making sure the clipped piece is on top, and then sewing your pinned seam. I would NEVER sew a curved seam like this without clipping the curves. It won't even lay nicely after pressing. Also, the purpose of easing seam is to allow for a little extra fabric for fit reasons, as in a sleeve head. I speak from 50 years of sewing. 30 as a professional seamstress.

    • @BeatrisSews
      @BeatrisSews 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can appreciate your comment. I come from a long time sewing garments too, though not professionally. I'm a steadfast believer in clipping curves for garment sewing and tailoring. I'm a relatively new quilter and many quilters are very afraid of curves - and they do not clip curves for the most part. I did ask this question of my instructor when I took a full day quilting curves class from an industry leader and author. When the seam allowance is relatively small (scant 1/4") it actually does ok with just a press. I've come to adopt the no clipping because there's a concern that it will weaken the seam at that spot. Thank you for comment and as per usual, everyone should have fun experimenting and doing what works for them!

    • @EsmereldaPea
      @EsmereldaPea 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Karen-rv3tx - we did an apple core quilt recently in my quilt class, and the instructor didn't clip curves. It looked awful. Yours looks much better, but you can still tell the seam isn't clipped as it doesn't lie completely flat. However, if you are quilting densely, it might not be noticeable in the final project and if you get the hang of it, it can save time. The argument that clipping curves can weaken the seam isn't applicable to quilting, since there's no stress on the seam, unless you're using the resulting fabric in a garment or tote that will go unquilted, and only pieced. But clipped curves on things like princess seams in very fitted garments under a lot of stress have been used for decades? Centuries? Done properly on appropriate fabric, it won't affect the structural integrity of a garment or a quilt.

      Hi! This is a great question. The BEST way to stitch lycra and elastic tulle is with a serger. If you must use a sewing machine, I would use the zig zag stitch to "join" seams. Then I would use the broken zig zag to "topstitch" over the elastic while gently stretching as you sew. Would you like a video to show this? For the elastic tulle, which I call "illusion," I would use a zig zag to stitch and no need to hem.

    I learned to sew clothing years ago and only recently found my way to quilting. The best technique is to start at the CENTER of the curve, and sew out to one edge, then sew from the center to the other edge, overlapping 2-3 of those center stitches (don't backstitch). This prevents the bias from stretching and twisting the weave of the fabric. Also, you should always have the inner circle on the bottom and manage the alignment of the outer circle seam to the inner circle seam. Any shifts in the seam allowances will cause the fabric to not lay as flat, and you might also have small "dips" in the curve shape. It sounds harder than it is - just sew slowly and align as you go.

    Hi, I did not realize my kids were making sounds in the background. You can watch the video with mute and read the instructions I posted above if that helps! Also the cc closed captions seem to work pretty well.

    I’m really interested in your technique, but the eating sound in the background was so gross I had to watch muted.

      Sorry about that. I sew in my living room and my kids do wander in and out.

    Looks like a good technique. Thanks for sharing. But, the person eating and fussing with the dishes and silverware in the background was distracting.

      Sorry about that. I sew at my dining room table during my free time and my kids do wander in and out.
