I think Ed never got over his son's death, and this sentiment was further reinforced by his ex-wife's death in s3 finale. Yeah, sure he loves Kelly, his adopted daughter, but at some basic part of his being, I think after his son died, he replaced his offspring with the Space Program, and later on with the idea of seeing the Martian Colony grow and thrive. Ed doesn't want to retire because retirement would mean going back to Earth, living alone in some dingass retirement home room, and - worst of all - being constantly tortured deep within by memories of his dead wife, son, and his best friends. Of all the characters, for Ed his homeworld represents loss, sadness, defeat and pain. Where he was just some guy unless he was in an office with his name carved on the office door outside. When when he was offworld - Moon, Space, Mars - did he truly feel like he mattered.

I'll admit I was rooting for them for the entire rest of the season after this scene

Spoiler warning. Honestly, I expected the season to end in a "good guys win" scenario, where earth gets the asteroid in some miraculous turn of events. But I am glad I was wrong, one step towards Martian independence.

My all time favorite TV show. Love this!
