Horus Heresy Battle Report - Ultramarines vs Word Bearers

😂you so reminded me of the first mark 6 kit for rouge trader, so many bits in the sprue scared the shit out of me, i put the sprue back in the box and list it to time...thankfully mark 7 came along

@@vitaliyred622 I think you might be surprised… the suzies are a great unit, but the mhara gal definitely balance out the equation for the Word Bearers. We did our best to make sure both lists are pretty evenly matched.
@hammersanddice I'm my experience Mara's are utterly cursed, even with 6 attacks they do 1-2 wounds. And 4+ at 50% is rather good. Suzies might just be the most busted legion unit in the game. They are like 15 pts less than a centurion with the same stats somehow. You give them hammers and they are a death blob. I am watching now and yeah, the dice gods have been bribed by the WB!
Also, it is Dark Breatheren not Glorios Martirdom , which is thier reaction. And, the target for another sacrifice is selected at the end of the turn, so you can kill one in shooting, charge something, your turn ends, you nominate the unit you charged as the next victim, so in enemy's turn you may kill it, thus getting 2 buffs! @hammersanddice
@@vitaliyred622 I’ve seen the mhara gal put in some serious work in a lot of games, but as you said the dice gods can be finicky 😂. The dark brethren sacrifice is a poorly worded rule, but we believe that the intent is game turn not player turn, which is the way we play it, so that you can’t get more than one dark brethren buff per turn.
@@hammersanddice tbh WB are one of the weakest legions and this is the only viable thing they can do. also, it doesn't mean you get 2 per turn, but you can get 2 in your and opponents turn, but will have to wait until of the end of your second one to name a next victim.

I think I’ve been using Sniper/Precision Fire wrong (and y’all got it right). Reading back over it, it looks like the attacker just gets to allocate how they want instead of allocating the initial wounds and if the target dies then the target player then gets to allocate as normal.
@@MayhapsOmegon yeah, unsurprisingly the wording is a bit confusing, who would’ve guessed in heresy…
Yeah its just like how a controlling player would allocate wounds, to whoever they want til they die then whoever they next want til they die etc til no wounds left

Great Battle Report lads! Love some red on blue action. Just as a FYI, the Mhara Gal has the Move Through Cover rule so he is not affected by dangerous terrain and would fight at initiative.
@@MassMultiThomas thanks!! We did discuss this and decided that while the mhara gel wouldn’t have a negative modifier for the charge roll, the rule (unsurprisingly) is vague as to whether it would impact his initiative. We decided to go with the modified initiative to give the ultra a slight chance… not that it helped too much 😂

I have to see i love to see the different approach to word bearers from what i usually see.. less suprises there for me on the ultra marine part bit still more variation than i usually see.

Started off nice but huge turnoff with the Artificer Armor tanking all those hits. That's something competitive 40k players would do and is not in the spirit of narrative 30k. How do you even explain that narratively? You can't, its pure gameyness Even SN battle reports use a modified version based on initiative
@@JackD-z7v thanks for the feedback! This was our first report and we stuck to things by the book in the one, but we are definitely open to making changes that will make future reports even better!

@@hammersanddice Dont stress it TBH. Making thematic lists and playing them well is *hardly* against the spirit of 30k. the artificer whining is a long standing 30k tradition dating back to 1.0.
Narratively I'd explain it the same way Winters SEO does: "Get behind me, men! Get behind me!" It represents the squad leader drawing the enemy's fire and making himself a prominent target. I don't generally take artificer armour for my sergeants (probably in short supply after Calth), but it doesn't super bother me.

Rules correction: Rules as written, technically Heavy chainswords are not included in the Deathwing unit sub-type to gain +1 to hit. This feels like it’s probably an oversight, but it doesn’t appear to have been addressed in the FAQs yet.
No Rite of War is an option and there are the core Rites of War. Also, the Legiones Astartes(Ultramarines) rule applies to any *model* shooting at a target another friendly unit with it shoots at it. Ultramarines tanks benefit and confer the benefit to others. Edit: Recommend putting a link to a DropBox or Google Doc PDF version of the mission.
@@rob.orangesm thanks for the feedback! you’re absolutely right, there are some other great options for running the ultramarines! Our intent here was to comment on the disparity in available legion specific rights of war, but we can get a bit caught up in the moment sometimes! Regarding the ultramarines legion rule, you’re correct. we were talking about the logos lectura benefits specifically only being able to be utilized by infantry and how that encourages infantry heavy lists. And yes, I will get a PDF of the mission posted soon!
Reactions are great, they're an awesome addition to the game overall. I think the easiest way to smooth the rough edges off them without adding bloat or too much bookkeeping would be to make all shooting reactions snap shots. Interceptor, return fire and overwatch. Might also have a side effect of making some of the lesser used multi shot heavy weapons, and flamers more attractive? People would likely start taking more augury scanners but I'm cool with that, you're paying points to snap shoot, if you get lucky great, but the game overall wouldn't feel so weighted towards shooting and it would give tanks a leg up as well
hey guys, enjoying the podcast! TBH I think it's very unlikely there'd be a major new edition of Heresy, invalidating all the books everyone just bought would push people away. Maybe like the shift from 3rd to 4th edition, or even less than that, more like a big FAQ and a new book with that incorporated, for people who don't wanna carry a big FAQ around with their old book. Points values and legion rules is where it gets tricky.. opens up a broader chat about how a living ruleset should be managed. I'd rather get a PDF with the new points and wait for Battlescribe to be updated than buy a new liber book and I reckon most people would feel the same.
We agree! We've heard some rumors, but yeah, we're hoping that it's a big FAQ with points adjustments rather than full new books. Either way, I think we'll have at least another year or so of the current edition.
@@hammersanddice for sure, I think some ppl commentating in the community probably overstate where Heresy is at for GW, I'm sure it's making a fat profit but that doesn't mean they've got the time or the budget to start cranking out new editions every 3 years!
The command squads can be easily converted. Im looking at one as an escort for Sevetar in my Night Lords. 3D Printers are a pretty common thing these days as well. Can also be used as a cheaper Dark Angels Companion squad, two shields and then everyone else with Calibanite warblades. In my area and other areas from what I have seen we have limited the shooting reactions to "One shooting type reaction per unit per turn." Includes free auspex intercepts. Allows for more varied armies and Rites of War and makes sense because a unit has to stop and reload at some point and shouldnt shoot more in their opponent's turn than your opponent can. I have noticed that many groups are banning or limiting lascannon heavy support squads or their legion specific equivalents. Everything from dont bring one, 0-1 max or no more than 5 guys. I know in casual games bringing a 10 man squad is looked down on as a dick move in the same manner as spamming dreadnoughts or more than one Scorpius.
That's a good house rule! We'd love to see GW do an FAQ to fix a few of the more crazy broken rules. We're planning on doing a discussion on how to self moderate lists for casual games and events for our next episode!

I think the shield on little Horus was intended for pairing him with a chieftain squad.
That would be cool! Hopefully that means we'll get an update on the rules for the cheiftian squad, right now they have normal boarding shields, so they're heavy, but Little Horus isn't.
Hibou's death is not in any books. It's actually stated in Little Horus that he fought his way through the Sons and was placed on a list of names to be hunted down.
