Moral of the story: "It's always better to avoid punches, rather than take them safely"
This is an excellent review of head guard studies. The problem is that concussions generally result from rotational blows. The best way to avoid rotational blows and concussions IS NOT THE BOX. I'd love the sport my whole life. I've been involved in it in a variety of ways. When done well it is something beautiful to watch. What is not beautiful is to see the damage that occurs by the end of the fighters career or years after. There is a lot to be said about the one-on-one contest that we see in boxing. But there are many sports that are not contact sports where we can see that same excitement and spirit. We don't often associate boxing in tennis, but if you've ever seen a real "fighter," you can see that same effort and spirit on the tennis court and you can also see the equivalent have a good fighter who gets knocked down in the second round and and fights his way back to winning the match. And if you look at top tennis players like Serena Williams, as much as I love the spirit in someone like Roberto Duran for Julio Cesar Chavez, you see that same spirit in the great tennis players... Except they're not slurring their words at age 50.
Damn bro nice video.
Wow this was a very good video with great information thank you very kich
You never showed whether there was any reduction in rotational acceleration with headgear. And I don’t believe it’s possible to do so. Measuring punches is a misunderstanding of where rotational acc. comes from. Close your eyes and keep your hands down, let me throw a right hook when I’m ready. Even with reduced power and wearing headgear, I guarantee you-your heads rotation acceleration will top whatever it would be doing the exact same experiment eyes open regardless of whether you have headgear.
You don't have to wear it unless you plan on taking boxing seriously since you can get more work done with a headguard than without one, that's what my coach says
Headgear is not worn with the intention of preventing concussions, they are worn with the intention of preventing cuts.
And how many boxing bouts do you have? Please explain your experience.
@@andrewtanczyk4009 you aren’t educated it’s ok simpleton
Best video out on headguards w good research to back it up. Thank you!
should mention that headguard makes your head bigger, plus the sweat on your face is more likely to make punches slip than headgear.
I never used to worry about wearing headgear. Instead I worked very hard on defensive footwork and head movement. I was sparring with a pro who was lighter and quicker and I sustained 2 black eyes. Not from heavy blows but just from his accuracy So I do now wear headgear. Just to protect against those things. I still though never consider headgear to be a part of my defence strategy and still work hard on head movement and footwork. So far concussion hasn't been an issue
facts dawg
the conclusion is so stupid..... wear headguard but be aware that it only helps by a bit and still try to avoid getting hit!! wtf dude
Did you watch the whole thing or just jump to the conclusion?
No he's right lol, the logical conclusion is to wear headgear but recognize that it doesn't allow you to take additional risk. The reason that people take excessive risk in headgear is because they believe it prevents concussion. If you know it doesn't help with rotational shots and act accordingly, trying not to get hit and sparring light WITH headgear, if an occasional (straight) shot lands a bit hard, it'll definitely help according to that study you cited.
So what head gear brands / models performed the best at protectung as you said there were differences between them?
Is this the ONLY video that addresses this important (and GLARINGLY SO) issue? 👍
You might wanna raise ur video volume, just something to note :) Edit: great breakdown
Number one punch in boxing
Make more!!!
Some people argue that the larger the headgear the total number of strikes to the head will be greater. The punch that might have missed the head entirely catches the headgear a 'glancing blow'.
thank you!!
hey brother.. you really helping me. keep it up!!!
I grew up with a guy who was a very bad ass fighter. He studied TKD and he boxed a little. He used this stance and box like he was using the Philly shell and kick the hell out of you when needed. This reminds me of him. ( oh snap, I just realized the Philly shell comment at the bottom lol)
For me it look like a art a Snake Cobra kick
How bout try not getting hit in the head at the same time as wearing headgear... 🤔
His greatest achievement is turning Aljo around from Yan's whipping boy. Dude actually managed to come on that ass.
I have brain damage from 16 years of sparring without headgear. It's really minor and does not affect my everyday life but I feel it. The point about headgear is not the full power punch but the many many half power strikes you take over the years. If your sparring partner tries to knock you out with all his might you maybe should rethink about the purpose of sparring and how you approach your training anyway. Don't go ham on each other. Train, learn and save your brain for the real fights
so if i train for like 3 years and spar somewhat hard once a week, will that lead to any major brain trauma?
@@Antimon121-76 If you spar hard and eat enough shots it will already have an effect even if you don't notice it. Going for a hard sparring every friday paired with the occasional hard punch you recieve during normal training and getting drunk on the weekends is what I did. Then came the day when I got home from training and took a shower - and I forgot that I just washed my hair. It was like completely earased from my short time memory. I ended up washing my hair like ten times before I noticed something was wrong, got out of the shower, brushed my teeth and forgot it as well. Must have brushed my teeth 4 times in a row until I had bloody gum all over my mouth. That was 13 years ago and to this day I have to follow a strict routine while showering or it happens again. CET is no joke and you better go for hard sparring like every 6 weeks or so and don't get drunk after it.
@@HuevosMMA would you rather smash head first in your steering wheel or wold you like an airbag to soften the impact? It's the same with headgear, it softens the impact and works as a damper. Still you will get rattled but not as hard and your damage over time will be less.
Exactly if you are sparring and going full then nothing protects you. Headgear is no substitute for control..it is just a safety net for the Occasional walk in to the punch or kicks..
You still would’ve gotten brain damage from wearing the headgear. Headgear increases the hitbox of your head, lessening head movement, and increasing the changes of getting tagged. You got brain damage because of poor sparring partners, lack of boxing knowledge, lack of defense, or having too much hard sparring sessions.
They don’t
Thanks, another TH-cam channel Ramsey Dewey makes the abbsurd claim that headgears do not help reduce injuries. Sadly he has a rather large following on TH-cam. Many are being deceived by him.
i follow the channel as well. I dont think he ever said that, he said that headgears do not prevent brain damage, but cut and bruises. iHs point is, if you are doing sparring at an intensity to cause you bruises or cut, you are also doing at an intensity to potentially damage your brain and if you are doing light sparring, it should not cause bruises, cut and damages to the brain, so for light sparring you do not need headgear.
@@danilo6548nope. He clearly said don’t wear a headgear. It’s safer to not wear one. Yet karate is clearly not the same as boxing. Point or kata strikes are different from boxing. Even if someone is holding back in sparring for boxing it’s still inevitable that bigger punches will be thrown. This is why it is safer to wear headgear than to not wear them. Ramsey Dewey should stay in his lane of martial arts or Kung fu whatever he does. Yet steer clear of trying to teach boxing. He had limited to no experience with boxing.
@@andrewtanczyk4009 he does MMA. He suggested not to wear headgear because it does not protect your brain, it makes your head bigger and decrease your visibility. But he also said that it protects your face from injuries. Honestly he just spoke facts. Then it is up to you to decide: is ok to have less visibility, so getting hit potentially more time, to protect your face? If the answer is yes then use headgear. Important is to have it very clear , your headgear won't protect your brain. Your partner pulling out the punches and your neck, will do
Great video
Tripping clinic in this match lol. Love it
He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever met. The guy is unreal and a problem in his weight class.
If u get leg kicks, just reverse the situatiom by giving him leg kicks too so he know that was so annoying
that’s a pretty ridiculous idea that doesn’t take into account stance or face a strong thai fighter
@@fqq4137 i was joking, just watch the video if u wanna counter leg kicks
Concussion is an inevitable part of mma…unless you’re francis ngannou

usually boxers die in the lightest weight divisions, so answer is easy.
I think the highest CTE in weight class I Overeem
Amazing video, I really liked the point you made on the accumulation head strikes causing some head trauma as well since a lot of people only look at the power of a punch. Recently they even found some soccer defender with CTE, which was likely caused by the frequent amount of times he headed the soccer ball. Great overall video.
Thanks!
I guess it's safe to say if you want to get CTE with a high likelyhood, get punched in the head by Ngannou as often as possible. Tbh I think the CTE problem cannot be eliminated from MMA without effectively crippling the sport - or turning it to submission grappling. Steps could surely be taken to reduce the risk. Apart from the very important hydration concerns brought up in this comments section, i wonder if the old Pancrase rules from the Rutten era (No closed fists to the head, no ground strikes) would mean a significant risk reduction. Obviously this would probably not be popular with audiences at all.
Great points made.
I truly appreciate this video, because it is totally a new topic. I would like to mention two points: 1) you said that lighter fighters will get hit more because their fights will more likely go to decision and therefore they will be more exposed to subconcussions. I agree but the thing is that majority of damage is not suffered during the fights, but during the training sessions. So in my opinion also heavier fighters should be concerned about subconcussions as much as the lighter fighters; 2) You said that heavier male fighters are more prone to CTE because they get the heaviest blows. But I could argue that they have also the strongest neck.
Thanks for commenting! I completely agree with your point that most brain injuries are sustained in training. However, this can't be accurately measured between weight classes without data on each fighter's training i.e. their sparring frequency and intensity. This video was simply presenting the data available from competition. Your second point about the heavier fighters having stronger necks is also a good one. A strong neck will reduce the acceleration experienced by your head when receiving a blow. However, we must then balance up the pro of a strong neck vs the con of receiving a larger force. Hope this helps!
Great video. The next few years are going to see an explosion of CTE and brain damage cases in combat and contact sports. We’re already starting to see it very young retired rugby players. And those guys weren’t even in the professional era. Wait until players who’ve had an entire career from 18-36 in the professional era start retiring (bigger/faster players + full time rugby career = more frequent and harder impacts)
Boxing has been around for a century. CTE has been around in that sport but it's relatively stable.
There are several studies that says even angular strikes are reduced by headgears. Anyway, It´s basic phisics: the bigger headgear is the less cinetic energy is transfered from the punch. Conclusion: ofc you should use headgear if you love your brain, the bigger, the best. Im talking about amateurs-practitioners like me, not profesional boxers... I asume a professional boxer does not need his brain at all
there are some pretty smart MMA fighters and boxers
I'm fairly certain Henry Cejudo's use of this technique against Demetrius Johnson is what secured the victory for him.
Couldn't agree more. The inside trip allowed Cejudo to take DJ down into a closed guard, which is often better for holding someone down than other bottom positions likes half guard. This took away DJ's ability to quickly enter into his fantastic scrambling game, giving Cejudo time to stabilise the position on the floor.
