Today, I sketched the double bass, also known as the contrabass, using a pen. These are not two different instruments but two names for the same one! "Double bass" is the common English name, while "contrabass" comes from Italian and is often used in classical music.
The double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched instrument in the string family. It’s so big that musicians either play it standing up or seated on a tall stool. Its deep, resonant tones provide the foundation for orchestras, jazz bands, and even some modern music.
Although it’s hard to tell from the drawing, the double bass can be as tall as 6 feet, making it the tallest string instrument. I wanted to capture its elegant curves and unique features in this sketch.
