One of my favorite Comic Strips is the June 14, 2004 one. I love this one because in order to get the joke you have to put it all together. Now any fan of the Garfield comic strips knows the joke comes in the final panel. This one breaks the 4th wall. Garfield breaks the 4th wall several times. Some people like it and some don't. By the way breaking the 4th wall is when an imaginary character rather in a book or movie or play acknowledges the Audience. The Audience is us who read or watch, can tell if a character is imaginary or not. We see and hear it all but the imaginary character doesn't always. But occasionally the imaginary character acknowledges the Audience and this is called breaking the 4th wall. The 4th wall is us. The other 3 walls are the set. Any show has to have at least 3 walls. But the 4th wall is the imaginary wall where we can see the characters but they act like they don't see us. But occasionally they get involve the audience. A lot of times when Garfield does something funny or says something funny in the last Panel Jon is looking at the audience as if he is saying see what I have to put up with, That is breaking the 4th wall. He is acknowledging us. Now on Garfield’s birthday they always break the 4th wall. Because his birthday is not the day his mom gave birth to him but rather the day the strip was born. My acknowledging the strip he is acknowledging the audience. Sorry for the long explanation. One the June 14th 2004 he acknowledges the strip in a different way. It is right before his 26th birthday. 26 years is a long time. It is ovta quarter of a century. But he is seen feeling good and young and healthy. As if he is saying yes I am getting older but I feel as young as I did the day the comic started. By the 3rd panel he is sweating and exhausted. He replays have these panels always been this long? In doing that he acknowledges his age physically but by saying panels he is referring to the strip. He is acknowledging the strip is getting older by acknowledging he is getting older.
