They was used as a singular pronoun long before its adoption for multiple people, the English language changes fairly often and thus being a stickler about a concept you're not even correct about is kind of silly.

Not only are you just historically false, you have single handedly limited your way of thinking about reality. I may sound harsh, but I’m only saying that to help you become aware. ‘They’ has been traced back as early since the 1300s to 1400s to refer to people whose gender is irrelevant or simply unknown. The word ‘they’ had just simply extended to also identify people who don’t conform to the imposed binary system (which as our understanding of biology increases, we realize that our sexuality and identity is much more fluid than initially thought) In addition to my point, the word you was grammatically plural as well as popularly used as a singular pronoun. And I’m saying this a devout Catholic, we have Christianity to blame for our binary approach to this word. For example, the Quakers were opposed to using ‘you’ as a singular in place for thee and thou, but the English speakers won. It is why we say “you are” when referring to one person. It’s because it was originally only to be a plural and the word ‘are’ is proof of that. I understand that English is a language based on popular usage and influenced by cultural norms, but English speakers won before, so we can win again. To give you a modern example of the word they in use, if you were to see a car pull in front of you, would you say “he or she just cut me off!” or “they just cut me off!”? You could just try to choose one or the other (maybe use only he, but the assumption there will set your mind up to assume other things as well about the gender of a person within professions and in positions of power. For the longest time, I thought only men knew how to drive because of this, so I was shocked when I was younger to see my mother able to drive.) Language is an expression of our thoughts, and it is up to all of us to resist the temptation of living in ignorance and embrace truth, and open ways of thinking that leaves less up in the air to assume, such as inclusive language, can we accomplish this.
