And the fifth (and true) problem is that we allow people and entities to buy up multiple homes and turn them into short term or long term rentals. The owners charge a premium to their renters to make sure they make money off the housing thereby pushing up the cost of housing. It used to be called sharecropping and was bad, but one hundred years later the rich figured out how to do it again. When one REIT owns enough single family homes in the US to house all of Iceland, any rational person should realize there is a problem. But crap like this video tries to tell you it is anything but that.

We need FIXED PRICE HOUSING. We need to build homes that provide the "utility" of housing people, where working class people no longer have to worry about how they are going to pay their rent. Fixed price housing would strictly be a utility, not to be sold or borrowed against as an asset. The benefit to fixed price housing is that land and building costs would be shared by taxpayers. The downside of moving into a fixed priced homes is that it would be illegal to sell your home for a profit. This is the only way to provide housing generationally for people. The trade off of not being able to sell fixed price housing for a profit is having a roof over your head, where you would not have to worry where your next payment would come from. If quality fixed priced housing proliferated this could drive down the insane prices of free market housing. Federal, state, and local governments would have to legislate the building of fixed price housing for its citizens. Detractors will say we don't have the money to build housing infrastructure for the masses and, yet, we spent $300 million a day in Afghanistan. Just imagine the transformational change we could've provided for hard working W2 wage earning Americans from building fixed price housing instead of fighting endless wars.
