My name is Scott Wiseman. I possess a love for travel and for climbing mountains. I believe that dreams are meant to be followed, and I intend to see as much of the world as I can. I am thankful for my opportunities to go on expeditions around the world. And I am passionate about bringing sharing the incredible sites I've experienced with others in the form of photos, video, and social media.
Alpamayo - Climbing "La Montaña Mas Bella del Mundo" | Cordillera Blanca, Peru
While there are many higher mountains in Peru, few are as famous as Alpamayo, known for its near-perfect pyramidal form and steep fluted faces. In fact, Alpinismus touted it "The Most Beautiful Mountain in the World" in one of its editions in 1966. It is the raw beauty, and technical challenge of Alpamayo that draws mountaineers from all over the world. When I decide on an expedition, I generally prioritize the aesthetic mountains over the highest, which made Alpamayo an essential item on my bucket list.
However, climbing to the top of Alpamayo was not a goal that presented itself easily. I attempted it one other time in July of 2022, but was sidelined by poor health and even worse weather and snow conditions. A year later I felt motivated to try again. This video retraces my steps on my second, and successful, attempt in July of 2023. Both trips were organized by Andean Raju Adventures, a local company based in Huaraz, Peru, employing some of the best mountain guides, expedition cooks, and porters in South America.
An Alpamayo Expedition typically lasts six or seven days, and begins at the small town of Cashapampa, where you enter Huascaran National Park. From there you follow the route of the Santa Cruz trek and stay at Llama Corral on Night 1, Continue to Alpamayo Base Camp on Day 2, Ascend to Moraine Camp on Day 3, do a steep glacier climb up to High Camp on Day 4, and push for the summit on Day 5. The summit push is by far the most physically and mentally demanding portion of the expedition, involving 6-7 pitches of ice climbing up a narrow corridor that reaching 70-80 degrees near the top. Over the final two days, expedition groups will normally retrace their steps back to Cashapampa. In my case, I continued to another mountain, Artesonraju, which will be the subject for another vlog.

PART 2: Climbing Amphu Laptcha Pass
มุมมอง 915ปีที่แล้ว
Climbing Amphu Laptcha Pass over 19,000' in Nepal is a challenging undertaking, involving trekking through the remote Hongu Valley, where there are no tea lodges, or electricity, or wi-fi, but only simple encampments. It is an alternative route taken by trekkers returning from Mera Peak, which you can learn all about by watching "PART 1: Mera, Climbing Nepal's Highest Trekking Peak". th-cam.com...
PART 1: Mera, Climbing Nepal's Highest Trekking Peak
มุมมอง 8Kปีที่แล้ว
Mera Peak is a popular trekking peak in the Everest region of the Himalayas of Nepal. At 6476M (21,247') it is classified as Nepal's highest trekking peak. Its summit rewards one of the best views in the Himalayas, where trekkers enjoy views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and Kanchenjunga. Interestingly, it was first climbed in 1953 only days before the first successful summit of Mou...
A Journey to Ama Dablam, October 2021
มุมมอง 4842 ปีที่แล้ว
On October 24, 2021 at approximately 7:45 AM I summited Ama Dablam with Pemba Rinji Sherpa. Ama Dablam translates to "Mother's Necklace" and is named for its unique form. The mountain's ridges stretch outward like a mother embracing her child. A giant glacier hangs from the upper mountain like the pendant of a necklace. This 6812M mountain is often referred to as the most beautiful in the world...
Forbidden Peak West Ridge
มุมมอง 1.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Have you ever wanted to know what it is like to climb one of North America's 50 classic climbs? Here is a climber's perspective of Forbidden Peak's West Ridge. I completed this climb in August 2021, while raising money for Big City Mountaineers "Summit for Someone" fundraising initiative. The money will be well spent in bringing underserved youth on unforgettable adventures in the outdoors. www...
Congratulations! And ty for the reminder - Whatever you dream of do it now don’t wait ! I’ve done Kili and Mt Baker but I’m still trying to find courage to this peak. It’s not joke! Kudos to you again
Out of this world
While very much in this world. I love how much this planet gives us to explore. ❤
Hi Scott, Great story, awesome footages. Had a nice time watching the video. Which was the hardest part of the expedition? Reaching the high camp or the summit push?
Thanks for watching it! I really tried to give a sense of what it was like to be there. Good question… Getting to High Camp feels like a summit push as well. It is less technical than the actual summit push, but not as straightforward. I’m concerned with how melted out it is getting below high camp. I noticed a big difference in just a year. Snow conditions were much better higher on the mountain.
Alpamayo, eres hermoso.
Bravooo 👏👏
Incredible footage and scenery and can see why this is often considered such a beautiful mountain!
It is not unreal how beautiful it is, especially at sunset!!
Graet story! ❤️ Tell Pau, granadilla is original from Peru, it is not granadina. Also, please help us campaigning for a clean environment by telling other climbers not to leave/dump any garbage or unused equipment up in the mountains, like other people do at the Everest. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Bravo à vous 🎉💪! J espère en faire autant 😊
Mantap and beuty mt. Alpamayo.
😮😮😮wao
Awesome! When was this expedition done ? I mean which month ?
The Alpamayo rice mountains are a classic 😂
Haha. It was a nice touch by our wonderful chef!
Amazing
Obrigado por compartilhar!
You are very welcome!!
😊
What's the difficulty level?
D+
Fantastic video Scott! Alpamayo is my absolute dream-mountain, it is just such a beautiful peak and looks like a great climb as well.
It was an obsession of mine for several years before I finally got there!
Bravoooo !!!!!
Thank you!!
Awesome video Congrats!
I appreciate it. 😊
Hermoso, gracias por difundir
De nada!! 😊
Congrats and well done! A special mountain indeed, and you don't see too many parties make the full traverse to the true summit. Looks like you had good conditions on the ridge for that though.
We left early enough to make the traverse. I also realized not many documented the traverse with a hero cam, so I took it on to challenge myself to do it. It was a little freaky to be on such a narrow traverse with only one hand on the ice ax, but the footage was worth it!
NIce vid! I climbed Pisco and Yannapacha last summer and hope to come back for the "bigger" stuff next time - this was great inspiration :)
Thanks! I hope this inspires you to go back for some loftier objectives!
Solid film Scott and great footage! I've had Alpamayo on the list since my first climbing trip in Peru back in 2019 and told myself I'd return once I satisfied myself I had enough experience to attempt the beast. 5 years on am I ready. Cheers for the motivation, look forward to the next climb!
Thank you so much for your comment and for watching the video. I wish you a successful journey to Alpamayo!
I just got astonished when you filmed in left hand with the cam and then took care of those last steps with another hand on to ice. the last sentences got tears. Thanks for sharing this awesome memory. Wish you more climbing.
Thank you! You were right! My steps became very slow while holding the 360 cam. I’m not sure I’d be able to self arrest if I slipped!
Congrats!! Really nice video!
Thank you very much for your response!
Shortly after this video was filmed, I had Edgar as my guide on Huarapasca before going to Alpamayo. Edgar made a mistake in the abseil on the descent that caused us to fall and left me with life changing injuries, while I understand that thankfully he was able to fully recover from his. He has since been fired as a guide. This is not a knock on andeam raju expeditions as they could not have reacted better to the accident. To be crystal clear i would use them again, but please please be sure to never use Edgar again. We were both lucky to not have lost our lives.
Holy hell, glad you both survived and it never hurts to check your guide's rigging, but as someone who does a lot of guided climbs I know there are so many times when we put our lives in their hands.
Sorry I never responded. I just wasn’t sure what to say. I didn’t perceive Edgar putting me at any risk beyond what I normally accept when climbing a technical mountain like Alpamayo. That being said, no human being is exempt from making mistakes, and it is extremely unfortunate what happened on Huarapasca. I hope you are able to manage your injuries in the best way possible.
awesome Scott! 😎
Thank you!😊
Thank you for this amazing video and congratulations for summiting! Alpamayo is also on my wish list 🙂
Thank you. It took me two tries, but it was worth it.
That was so good, thank you.
🤍🤍
Thanks!
Great job and an awesome video, thanks!
Great video, that drone shot at 14:26 shows some were walking on top of the cornice.. yikes!
😅😂. Yeah, it’s good that we don’t watch the drone footage until after the climb down. That’s the same serac that blocks us from doing the French Direct Route, because we are concerned with it falling on down from above. Yet… we go stand on top of it! 🤷♂️😅 But what’s alpine climbing without a little spice?
I have never seen a blog about Artesonraju. So that will be interesting. Congrats on your Alpamayo summit, amazing video, really enjoyed.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. There will be an eventual vlog on Artesonraju, even though we turned around shy of the summit due to unsafe snow conditions, but it was still an amazing experience.
Really enjoyed watching this, great shots!! 🤩
Thank you! Some shots were tough to get, especially walking the knife ridge with only one free hand, but it was worth it.
Hi Scott. We're happy for your accomplishment in Alpamayo. Thank you for choosing us again. The video looks great. See you soon!
Thank you. I plan to come to Peru many more times, and I will always plan a climb with Andean Raju Adventures. You’re the best at what you do! :) The adventures are endless!
Well Done Scott...I have been looking at Cotopaxi but looks like it may stay closed for the upcoming Climbing Season, so Mera Peak has my attention at this time. Beautiful Vlog and Congrats on your Summit. I did Aconcagua Dec 2022. Have you looked at that Climb?? I will enjoy following you Scott. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Park City.
Hello! Thanks for your comments. Yeah, Cotopaxi being an active volcano has been closed to climbing on more than one occasion. I was fortunate to summit Cotopaxi in December of 2020 in perfect conditions. If you still decide on Ecuador, Cayambe is another beautiful objects, as well as Chimborazo (although it has gotten more dangerous due to instable snow and rock). I have thought about Aconcagua many times, but its during our winter when I'm very busy as a ski instructor! So, I have yet to do it or commit to doing it. Stay tuned on my channel, as I will be putting out a new video on Alpamayo Sunday morning.
Beautiful scenes here, what an adventure. Keen on following your travels!
Thank you! I’m working on a video from Alpamayo in Peru. Be sure to check back soon.
Great video Scott. Brought back great memories of when my son and I did the same trek back in the spring of 2018. Congratulations on your trek.
Thank you. That makes me feel great! ❤
Great Video, Thanks
I’m very glad you liked it!
What a great video! Thanks for sharing your journey ! Loved how you congratulated all the Sherpas on the summit . On average , how heavy was your backpack and what kind of training did you do leading up to your expedition? Thanks again and we’ll done !
Sherpas deserve all the praise they receive and then some. They are people of extraordinary strength and resilience. They are the only reason these Himalayan peaks are accessible. With the porter help, I would carry around 30-40 lbs per day and not the amount I would carry if I were specifically backpacking. We went from one established camp to another, so a lot of camping gear and extra food was not necessary to bring. The best way to train is to walk and hike and come as close as you can to replicating the feeling of hiking up and downhill with added weight.
Thank you. Just what I wanted to see. Congratulations on your summit.
Thank you. I appreciate you watching!
Of all the Mera Peak videos, this one of the most precise, concise , and well documented. Congratulations!!!
Thank you so much!
Nice!
Thanks!
What's your some memorable moments in nepal
Oh my! Sooo many! But I must say I love the people the most. They are as beautiful as the mountains they call home.
Stunning views and experience
Thank you. I’m happy you enjoyed it.
Stunning mountains ❤ and beautifully shot trip. It makes me want to go back 😅
Thanks Amparo. You and I so lucky to experience this country. I feel a duty to share it. It sure was worth it to keep the camera going.
Excellent footage Scott! Amazing experience 👏
Thank you, Amparo. Many more happy trails to you!
Nice video Scott
