Simple Is Not Always Easy!
In this lesson I talk about playing simple, and why that is not always easy. I talk about this concept I heard from Bernie Dresel recently. The groove is taken from one of my favorite songs with Porcaro on it, and so is the fill. Grab your sticks, let's play.

    That is exactly what he is NOT playing... I don't know why every drummer on this planet can't HEAR his double 16th notes on his bass drum... Bonham would NEVER play a simple 4 beat riff,,, " snare, floor tom, mounted tom and then 1- bass hit. It's Snare, Floor tom,, Mounted tom and two bass drum notes....NOT ONE!!!!!!!!! LOOK UP THE CORRECT MUSICAL NOTATION FOR THIS AND YOU WILL SEE THAT HE HITS HIS BASS DRUM ""TWO" TIMESS EVERY TIME.... NOT ONE!!!!!

R(floor tom)LRRL(sd) BD -- NOW IT FLIPS BACK -RL(sd)RR(ft)L(sd)BD practice the quick move RL(sd)RR(ft) / R(ft)LRR(sd) to get the right move from floor tom to the snare and back also at the end of this he plays ( I think ) the hand to hand pattern on the snareRLRRL(BD) R(snare) and adds an extra stroke you can see Jeff do this is and the double cymbal crash thing YT Jeffrey Thomas Porcaro recording session 1989 Japan watch till the end he plays all the fills he usually plays also YT Jeff intro you can see and hear him play 5 stroke thing on a tracking dare for Benny Hester album song is called passion possession Also Los lobotomy band lobotomy stew he plays this

    Jeff does this crazy 5 stroke roll groove at about 8:05 min into this video. Leland Sklar posted about it. So cool i found the original guy who took the video! th-cam.com/video/7hPboLIK7P8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xdPuVemAEu0iPCsC Any idea how to breakdown this groove?😂 Jeff is a legend

    • @DWDrumMethods
      @DWDrumMethods 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it was me who took the video. I believe Jeff was talking about this being a inverted paradiddle groove, the 5 stroke roll was just at the start. I believe his sticking is LRRL-RLLR, with the last 16th note of beat 4 starting the accent pattern. His base plays the standard samba base drum pattern. Sounds easy, but Jeff's feel is so great, and his orchestration is so great, and the speed make for a very challenging groove. Here is the full video just in-case you never saw the whole thing. th-cam.com/video/e4J49rW0l-Y/w-d-xo.html

    Thanks for pointing me here from the Toto video. th-cam.com/video/Ymz5Ti0oeS0/w-d-xo.html Another excellent breakdown. The one thing I'll add is the way he changes the ending for each of the four groups: snare flam, low toms flam, snare+open hi-hats, low toms flam. Gives it a lovely up-down-up-down pattern. And Peart is indeed "Peert" rather than "Pert".. th-cam.com/video/iq3yjfoorsU/w-d-xo.html

      Thanks for the nice words. And for the clarification on "Peert" I've said it the other way for so long it will be tough for me to adjust. :)

    Why?! 😅 Exactly! The why for me is the lack of confidence and practice on doubles. I definitely need some doubles in my playing. Thank you for the lesson. The fills sound different and great 👍🏼

      Thanks for watching. I think you are like a lot of drummers who shy away from doubles because of lack of confidence in them. But start slowly and in time you can and will incorporate them into your playing. It will open up a lot of new possibilities. Thanks again for watching, I have quite a few lessons on doubles and sticking combinations if you would like to check them out as well.
