Quadruple Headed Steam Train - Narrow Gauge Steam Galore!
At the end of MOTAT's Rail Live Day in November of 2024, the team decided to put together all their operating steam locomotives onto one long mixed train, with a Dsa shunter on the other end to pull the train down the hill.
This made for an excellent scene to watch the steam locos -- Bertha, L507, F180, and Y542 -- climbing the grade up to Waititiko Station.
Enjoy!

In September and October of 2024, KiwiRail have been running test trains up the North Auckland Line in order to re-train staff after the long closure of the line. The line has since officially reopened, and freight traffic is set to resume later this year. We followed...
Low 'N Slow Descending Union Pacific's Cima Grade - Featuring a Tank Train!
มุมมอง 1942 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, we ventured out into the heart of the Mojave Desert to film Union Pacific trains in the blistering dry summer heat. Unexpectedly, we found a train carrying 14 wagons each loaded with up to 2 tanks - you heard that right - tanks! Pretty out of the ordinary for a Kiwi foamer to see! We also followed a long and heavy UP coal train all the way down the grade, with a friendly driver a...

This line serves as the main rail link between Christchurch in the South Island, and Wellington in the North Island. Watch as DXB, DXR, and DXC locomotives work hard through tough terrain and stunning scenery. Enjoy!

Hi I like your video
Awesome
How can I see when these events happen?
They happen every November on the rail themed monthly live Sunday at MOTAT. The May one is usually steam heavy too.
@@alexsmith8964 Thanks
I think 4 will be the max there i dont know about 5 though 🤔
Bro made a video of it
There I am on the 30 ton ballast block at the back. We were just along for the ride up the hill - good fun that was
Great video
Fastest upload in the west (being in the L was so fun today)
#foamingwithbaker
Love the combined DBR/DC sounds!
Good coverage of the north and south bound excursions between ohakune and glenbrook mate 👍
first
Those look like our (Australia) M1A2 SEPv3s we've ordered. (They were spotted on Twitter on the bright green flat) Good catch for a Kiwi in the US to spot Australian tanks. xD
Interesting! Was pretty neat to see roll down the hill - I wasn’t expecting it at all!
FU6N BORING
I saw that train pass through Morningside station on Tuesday afternoon i was on the Swanson train headed west, lead loco has seen better days looks bit of a mess
Oh Yeah!!
The biggest test will be getting a decent amount of tonnage off the trucks
I'm the dud in the orange 😅😅
Smile for the camera! 😂
A nicely filmed video. 👍
Is 120 still going North Friday 11th Oct ? .
I heard nothing is running but could change

❤ ALL I can say is "BEAUTIFUL"! Be Safe and Keep it UP!! 😮
The greater part of the NIMT is electrified yet it is now operated almost entirely by diesel locomotives. Surely KR should now order from a European manufacturer dual voltage 25kV Ac /1500V DC electric locomotives? In Europe there are different electrification systems so the industry produces reliable dual-voltage locos. And fill the unelectrified gaps Pukekohe - Te Rapa and Palmerston North - Waikanae with 25kV wiring. The distances aren't great. France manages with both 1500V DC and 25kV systems, so can North Island of NZ. You don't see diesel locomotives hauling long freights 'under the wires' in Europe as they seem to do in NZ (except in Britain where this does happen too much!).
Great Video, Believe it or not GP60s and SD70MAC's on the Copper City Sub are not that rare.
News to me! Is there a clear reason why that's the case?
@@TheKiwianTrainspotting BNSF like most class 1's utilizes EMD Power on most locals, roadswitchers, and yard jobs.
Great video!. With the first two examples of the new DM class locomotives on their way to New Zealand are we seeing and hearing the twilight of the DX class locomotives?. It will be a very sad day when the roar of the DX's FDL 12 prime mover is no longer heard on the Midland Line.
Keeping the Dixie's only for the Midland line as they've got tunnel motors fitted can always send them back up North and get rid of those chinese junkers
Unfortunately - yes, that may be the case. With freight volumes shrinking year after year, the demand for a large locomotive fleet is decreasing, and may just leave the DM's and DL's in service, plus a few DC's for heavy shunting. Get out and see the DX's while you can! The DM's finish arriving in 2026.
Nice to see a DF on the express, a lot more reasonable than double dixies. Your panning shots are so well executed and satisfying to watch, well done!
Thank you!
Wow this footage is incredible! The scenery is just as awesome as the rail action!
It's good to see the DL locomotives come to whangarei before cyclone Gabrielle hit. Regards Tom in onerahi/whangarei.
Mean as lashups in there too, Dash 9's, ACe's u name it other than GEVO's
Very cool! Nice to see a GP60M still kicking.
Great Video, something different from New Zealand!
Just back from a trip on the TranzAlpine. Highly recommended.
How do you manage to stay ahead of the train as it seems to be moving at a pretty good pace. Some action from Canada. th-cam.com/video/AzkEAYNNq08/w-d-xo.htmlsi=REQBax5zYUfQia_3
Nice video. Some of those bridges at the beginning with wooden piers look a bit shaky for all that weight. Subbed your channel.
is that ja1271?
Overall a good clear video. But, disappointed that the entire length of freight trains was not shown, by cutting/editing out some of the recorded footage.
Hey there - cutting the footage is necessary, otherwise the video could easily be well over half an hour long! I like to keep people engaged by showing them the interesting stuff. For reference I like to have at least one or two shots that show the whole length of the train(s). Thanks
Great video mate I really enjoy it
Some great footage. How much traffic is there running between Christchurch and Invercargill on an average day?
There's not much tonnage and trains are short. The large number of DM class locos will be overkill when they arrive - so after replacing DX types, I expect many of the new locos will gravitate to the North Island - especially if the electrification is mothballed to ease demand on power supplies. There might even be a case for sending the DL class to the South and keeping all the DM in the North? Sadly, the long-haul trucking industry has scooped up customers in the south.
Hey, there's around 8 trains that run between Christchurch and Dunedin, and 4 between Dunedin and Invercargill, plus the various shunts that run out to places like Dunedin or Timaru. On weekends, the line is almost completely dead.
Amazing video! New Zealand is so beautiful! Have a nice day! Greetings from Ukraine 🇺🇦!
Excellent footage - and audio.
Bloody awesome video hunter great camera work.
wow six locomotives to navigate the 30/1 foot incline through the tunnel
Absolutely brilliant shots mate!!
7:34 kids wanted the horn, so I gave them the horn
What an epic South Island trip! Fantastic scenery and camera angles.
Absolutely brilliant! There looks like a few inclining grades on that line
