    Big old trees close to your property do not only damage your houses and garages’ doors, but also are places for snakes, hidden cameras, and hiding intruders!

    Someone who hates English Ivy as much as I do. Here in the Pacific Northwest USA, it is a horrible invasive species. It kills big old healthy trees. We have parks that are nothing but English Ivy strangling trees. I hate the stuff.

    Bit superficial to be honest and in particular a tapered crack does not necessarily mean subsidence (which was not defined). For example it could be the opposite - heave. Anyone interested in cracking to their house would be well served to read Building Research Establishment Digest 251 (Assessment of damage in low-rise buildings) as this is the document most surveyors initially refer to anyway. Most importantly it concludes that “The only certain way of confirming the progression of damage is to take a series of measurements with time.”

    Ivy is amazing. Purifies the air we breath so those with asthma would benefit from having it around. It also attracts birds and bees. Covering your house can keep it 8% warmer in winter and 18% cooler in summer. Natural insulator

  • @brianmcallister7114
    @brianmcallister7114 ปีที่แล้ว

    Keeping ivy away from the guttering is sufficient. I see many bigger tasteful houses clad in stunning ivy offering birds and bees habitat and food year round. Well maintained it will protect your wall. The claim that ivy on a wall makes it damp is NONSENSE. It is the opposite! Check the RHS website if you doubt this. The ivy drains the water off the wall surface through its aerial roots and the wall behind is dry whereas without the ivy a north facing wall would stay damp. Ivy does NOT penetrate sound brickwork. I've removed fence panels that were rotted away except for the ones covered in ivy for years which were bone dry and looked brand new underneath because they were protected from sun and rain. Modern age fixation with tidiness and killing things is leading to a wildlife apocalypse. Ivy on sound brickwork or rendered wall will do zero harm to the structure. Let it grow and help our dying wildlife. Its more important than garden vanity. Just keep it back from the gutters.

    Air bricks may be important for moisture but as anyone with these kind of houses knows, they are very cold houses! Adding more airbricks should be followed by you need to insulated the floor too.

      I have a house nearly 200 years old and some dappy developer went air brick happy in the living room and placed 6x full brick sized ones in a room 4x4m yup 6 and to add insult to injury the holes are level with the paving slabs so when it rains, the holllow floor fills with lovely rain water, not to mention every time a car passes a lovely little puff of freezing cold air shoots into the room, ahhhh nothing like that to make you feel happy to run your heating continuously and costing a small fortune, and if we decide to just wrap up and not turn the heating on we can expect frost on the carpet yes frost!!!! Thanks university level engineering developer that has never held a screwdriver, thanks

    • @woodworks2123

      @@kanehood3478 the air bricks aren't meant to go into your living area, they were meant to go below the floor to let the foundations breath so moisture doesn't form. If they put them into you living area, that's completely wrong, get them taken out and filled in. Or if you can't afford to at the moment, full them with expanding foam.

    • @kanehood3478
      @kanehood3478 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@woodworks2123 they went into the floor void, not the living space but freezing cold air came out of a few gaps noticeably where the radiator stems come out of the floor boards as it seemed to be cut by a crosseyed toddler (60mm hole for 15mm pipe) annoyingly it was also inline with the air bricks, since my original post i have raised 3 out of the 6 bricks and removed the other 3, I removed all floor boards from the living room and used a dehumidifier to dry out the damp, installed 2x 8ft double convector radiators under the floor then replaced floor boards with new varnished oak boards and installed several adjustable vents into the boards above the rads allowing heat into the room and closing them off if not wanted, its also nice as under floor heating, and i wanted to get rid of the radiator from view to go back to the 1810s styling, next job is to repair both chimney stacks and get them working again but thats fir another day and thread

    You can have a hot water tank and still have a new boiler. The header tank, meaning an open system, is an older/traditional system. Swapping to a combination boiler from a hot water cylinder system would require lots of pipe work mods, depending on the pipe work layout, combination boilers often struggle to serve simultaneous hot water demand and high flow showers.

    A while back our house was given an additional room from space that used to be two outdoor cupboards. It's been around 15 years since the upgrade and we had numerous "experts" in from the housing association to assess dampness issues. Throughout all this time none of them, have acknowledged that the floor is hollow and that there appears to be no air bricks at all present around the outside of the building. We're currently in the process of buying the house. Do you think we should take legal action to rectify this situation or are going to be better of counting our blessings and paying for airbricks to be installed from our own pockets?
