2024 Lehigh Mega Release: Whitewater Rafting Triple Drop, at 3,330cfs
The 2024 Lehigh River Mega Release: Featuring Triple Drop, at 3,330cfs
Good Times with Great Friends.
Whitewater Rafting Triple Drop on the Lehigh River with: @RiverTrailOutfitters, @PotomacPassageOolikhanna, @glenndouglass9921, @lisamassee2139, and Shredding with @jerkonoza7812
First time rafting the Lehigh...Triple Drop felt came at us in the fashion of "Single Drop," with the plan to power through the dam on the traditional right line, but down the middle in the most retentive line she went...with it being the guides's first time, in it looking like the third drop was after the dam, in how it presented as the first drop.
First Mega Release...and the most fun yet, on par in being top tier fun with the annual Lehigh Classic downriver race. Kayaked The Upper Section at approx. 2,500cfs, and making the safe decision in opting with the raft with the unknown, to learn what to expect with the lines and features at 3,500cfs+. The camaraderie couldn't have been any more of a blast! Looking for a crew? Come out and join us!
Description of Triple Drop per American Whitewater:
"A large island divides the river with some Class II riffles to the right of the island. Some small rocks and bushes mark the passage entering the left of the island. Chose any slot that has enough water to float you. Enter the channel below in the center, and work your way right to avoid a ledge on river left. About half way down the island you will see a horizon line marking a drop of about 1 foot. Punch the reversal on the far right. If you get stuck you could be in for a long time, until you paddle over to the left shore and drag your raft out. At higher water levels (3,000 cfs or greater) the hole becomes a very sticky surf. Several people have dislocated their shoulders here. There is a tiny surfing hole below this drop. After it, work your way over to the right to rejoin the current as it comes from the right side of the island. A fair stretch of flatwater brings you past Hayes creek with 3 pillars remaining from an old bridge.." - www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/view/river-detail/3138/main

    Do you think the Frankenstein would be faster than your time in with the Green Boat? Maybe find out at the 2025 race...

    • @FrankensteinDIYkayak
      @FrankensteinDIYkayak วันที่ผ่านมา

      it's just a small noticeable notch faster than the green but not as maneuverable so with the green you might find a slightly faster line and difference negated. in some situations where there are the right hydraulics and waves the speed difference might be greater.. frankenstein is the most comfy boat i have paddles so for longer races where my legs get stiff i can stretch them out easily so it letsme focus more on other things.

  • @PotomacPassageOolikhanna
    @PotomacPassageOolikhanna 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Excellent view of showing the race lines, in how greatly the left and right lines differ, and who wide the channel is, which is helpful in case of a bottleneck effect with the lead pack coming through during the race. Regarding the fastest lines for the race, the Maryland Chute was a couple of minutes faster than the Center Chute.

    Great coaching on the attaining moves and lines, especially with the creeky and rocky low water lines. Big difference here from your video at 7ft., where Knoxville Falls looks to be a true attaining challenge, perhaps the most difficult level to attain, as it rushing hard, but was washed out from the view at Weverton Cliffs at 12ft. What do you mean by, "get high in the eddy" as a tactic and strategy move, and is that more advantageous for attaining particular features?

    • @FrankensteinDIYkayak
      @FrankensteinDIYkayak 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      get high in the eddy means go to the most upstream part before peeling out to ferry, attain to next rock, etc most of the time. at higher levels like above 4 feet the moves are wider open andd still doable but you need a faster boat like a salom that is tuned to your style, weight, and size. there are only a few I''ve seen. maybe i sshould try and get video of them to show how the moves are different and such.

    • @PotomacPassageOolikhanna
      @PotomacPassageOolikhanna 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@FrankensteinDIYkayak Thank you, that is very helpful, making a video that illustrates getting high in the eddy with the narrative of what you explained would make for a great training tool. Would a Prijon T-Slalom fit the style you mentioned, giving you an advantage over the typical modern long boats, or do you mean the fiberglass slalom kayaks? Could make a video comparing moves in the Green Boat against T-Slalom or a true slalom. 4ft. seems to be the level where it starts to become a challenge at Knoxville Falls, with specific moves over muscle being a must, like what we saw at 7ft.

    • @PotomacPassageOolikhanna

      Maybe you could spearhead that; unlike with "The Ruins" at the Lower Staircase on Virginius Island, these Ruins - Weverton Gates Ruins & Old Marble Cutting Mill - may likely be unknown by the mainstream, and are slightly isolated with rocky terrain from the C&O Canal Towpath, which presumably is what preserves it from being polluted with garbage, unlike just a little ways upstream.

    Why paddle the upper at 856?

  • @FrankensteinDIYkayak
    @FrankensteinDIYkayak 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    lets hope for more rain. this is almost the perfect level to begin attaining this stretch. the current is the least pushy while by and large being deep enough to prevent paddle snags and boat scrapes. it offers the widest range on line options as you can either go straight up many stretches or work your way up through the small rapids and avoid the current by maneuvering. Hopeto see more out there sometime.

    Awesome skully move to make the ledge move! This is as close to a baseline for the lowest flow, about .30 more feet should be right on. This makes for a strong baseline in noticing how the features will change with increased flow in increments of half a foot, and determining at what level creates the wash out effect. Definitely a playground at low flow and attainable in play planing hull play boats. You're next Needles attainment will have to be in the Prijon T-Slalom.

    Funniest part - "Oh a Swifty. That's the first time I've ever seen a Swifty down this far...That Swifty guy I think does'nt think he can do it." What's also funny, is you said you haven't seen a Swifty down that far before...does that mean you have seen a Swifty at Tohickon before, just not that far down? Do not recall seeing the Swifty at the Take Out...and the green kayaker got mashed into the rafter/Shredder train...which we assisted in recovering his kayak.

    Must have been some newbie kayakers. Just dont even bother to see whats going on around them. I know commercial rafts consider them as fair game. Being an open boater I have heard the conversation in a raft plotting to run over me. Amazed to see two MEs out there. Bought one back when they first came out. Went to a smaller boat and the ME sat for years and the wood rotted away. Couple of years ago I rebuilt it and was amazed at what a great boat it is. Big enough to carry camping gear or another body. Bought a used raft from the NOC years ago and hated that thing. Allways had a drunkin scurvy crew who wouldnt follow instructions

      I have mentioned the need for groups to space out often and it's good practice. everyone is a good swimmer and comes through in the end though. groups bunching up and creating issues have been an issue long before this crew 10 - 15 years ago with other crews so I'm an advocate of people being pot and alcohol free on the river.

      Oh yes, our funnest Tohickon trip yet! Right on, Frankenstein DIY Kayak sure called the warning multiple times..as well as those beep beeps, haha, but that's what happened at Chute, got too jammed up even though I turned around to get behind The Purple Haze before hand and then ended up upside down with the inflatable green kayak above me. Frankenstein DIY Kayak sure knows how to call it...there's a scene of him precisely giving us that advice before running Blue Hole at the "Bloomington" section of the North Branch of the Potomac River - at 5:57: "Kayaking the North Branch of the Potomac River: The 2023 September Whitewater Release (963cfs)" - th-cam.com/video/9JeTIG7ad4g/w-d-xo.html. Would be cool to link up some time. Feel free to reach out if you would like to join up with our crew! We run all of the regional releases and compete in most of the races. Our home rivers are the Potomac and Shendandoah Rivers, in Harpers Ferry, WV.

      @@FrankensteinDIYkayak "Boater in front of the raft, move it" - You sure did mention it, way more than once, and it was funny when you said, "we need a little airhorn or something," after Captain Glenn said, "try not to run over Steven," haha. It wasn't like those stories when you have said, "move it," how some have taken it as, "MOVE IT!" Like with the mushroom story at Moorefield Canyon, you always bring the best stories! Another good one, and fine example of you mentioning to "space out" was just before running Blue Hole at the "Bloomington" section of the North Branch of the Potomac River - at 5:57: "Kayaking the North Branch of the Potomac River: The 2023 September Whitewater Release (963cfs)" - th-cam.com/video/9JeTIG7ad4g/w-d-xo.html

      I've done so many trips where a swim or mishap would have been prevented with a little spacing out but I would have been called an a@#$%^e if I would have yelled loudly enough. It might be a good idea if they practiced spacing out in good practice spots in AWA courses. @@PotomacPassageOolikhanna

      @PotomacPassageOolikhanna ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrankensteinDIYkayak You really made that point and drove it home starting at 13:58, seems likely for most crews, but not with this one, that would respect and heed the cautionary advice out of concern for the best interest of everyone. The green kayaker who swam at Hat's Rock, at 31:06, almost got ran over, which is why I think he smacked The Purple Haze with his paddle, as he got squeezed in the pocket both rafts and the Shredder (our crew helps to assist his recovery). You sure called it with, "we're gonna have a big mash up here!"

    You were two for two, when it came to the traffic jam mash-ups you called it ahead of time like no one else ever has, haha. All in all, the memories made here were among the best yet. Running the advanced line for the firs time on the second run was a solid skill tester and a rollercoaster like thrill every second of the way....a good day of being thankful in being able to live life to the fullest.

      @@jakevalentino7179 with your adventures on the high seas of the Chesapeake, Tohickon would definitely be your kind of rollercoaster screams kind of ride! Like being on the drag strip in "Cameron's Cars" kind of a thrill, haha. And...you should have seen John in his prime...he ran Ohiopyle Falls back in the day...and many trips down Maryland's wild and historic Savage River!

    No comments? That’s crazy! This is some epic content. Almost as epic as that giant dance contest trophy from Jack Rabbit Slims.

    That was a great day for a race. The ground work is set for the next race. Liked the sound effects in the video. The North Branch is always a great time.

      The most ideal weather conditions yet, and you so know it...and nailed it....always a great time (that so should become the motto), from 400 to 1,500cfs from how we know that treasured paradise. Looking forward to seeing how this paves the way for next year's turnout, and perhaps the next classic race of the region.

    Great instructional material and wrap up on attaining tips and overall technique after the last attainment. Keep up the teaching moments in future videos; the explanation helped to make this one to pull the viewer in more, and stand out in contrast to your other videos. It was a fun watch with the drone like view on the first and most vigorous chute! That one sure looked to be the chute with the greatest/steepest gradient of all of the attainment options, and be the most energy demanding chute/section of the river wide ledge of the Mighty Potomac.

    This is somewhat a tricky spot but also somewhat straight forward. there is a strip of slower less turbulent water in the middle of the outflow that if you get the boat in you can advance easier. it is similar at many levels one has to just surf their way to the best spot then attain. entrance to 100 yd dash is the next level of accomplishment which I hope to get on video. Comments from other attainers, their technique and how and why they choose their gear would be cool
