Kayaking the Potomac River's Weverton Rapids & Knoxville Falls at 7.21ft./27,700cfs
-Kayaking the Potomac River's "Weverton Rapids" Ledge System & Knoxville Falls AKA Pain's Falls, with ‪‪@PotomacPassageOolikhanna at 7.21ft./27,700cfs: With Full Wash Out, The Traditional & Prime Surf Waves & The Attaining Lines for Knoxville Falls Were Out of Play, Although, On The Rare Side, Some High Water Level Dependent Lines Were Alive, Presenting The Knoxville Falls "Attainer's Challenge" To Still Be Doable, Albeit With A Slim Margin of Forgiveness & Requiring Fast Technical Moves For The Advanced Attainer
Looking to attain, creek, micro-creek, or river run around Harpers Ferry, or join up for local and/or regional kayaking trips, kayak races, or making kayaking movies/photography? If so, please reach out and come in join in on the fun good times!
This is the sixth installment of the Weverton Ledges & Knoxville Falls kayaking & attaining series, documenting the hydrological changes in the forms & features of the ledge system's river wide rapids detailing the conditions to determine the ideal levels for: attaining lines, downriver lines, & surfing, & to distinguish the flow rate that brings lines & rapids out of play at washout and too low of flow levels. On July 9th, 10th, 13th-23rd, and the 30th-31st., the level dropped under 1.0ft., ranging from .79-.99.ft, reaching the lowest flow thus far for 2024, .79ft., on July 18th (as of October 5th). Dropping under 1ft. is a rare occurrence, especially under .90ft., and is a considerably noticeable difference from the low one foot range, being much more drastic in the drop than from 1.5ft. to 1.2ft. On 8/10, the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Debby_(2024) came, increasing the flow from 1.34ft./2,210cfs on August 8th to a peak flow of 12.48ft./61,200cfs on August 10th. Due to safety precautions, with it being just @PotomacPassageOolikhanna and I, it was decided to forgo surfing, attaining, & running Knoxville Falls' Center Line (the biggest line of the three). Attaining Knoxville Falls would have been attempted with a larger crew. The lines were surveyed the previous day from Weverton Cliffs, with a flow rate of 11.48 ft., 5,420cfs, resulting in a fall of 4.27ft., in catching it at a new level of 7.21.ft. At 11.48ft., the left and right lines of Knoxville Falls were completely washed out, with the center line roaring loud & primed for a rollercoaster akin to dropping into 100 Yard Dash's Tongue & White Horse's jaws, followed by the bounce of Bull's Tail at high water.

  • @FrankensteinDIYkayak

lets hope for more rain. this is almost the perfect level to begin attaining this stretch. the current is the least pushy while by and large being deep enough to prevent paddle snags and boat scrapes. it offers the widest range on line options as you can either go straight up many stretches or work your way up through the small rapids and avoid the current by maneuvering. Hopeto see more out there sometime.

Feel free to join up anytime, happy to have you! We have long boats you can try out too to transition too when the bigger flow and wave trains return. You're be featured again in an upcoming 100 Yard Dash video too!

Awesome skully move to make the ledge move! This is as close to a baseline for the lowest flow, about .30 more feet should be right on. This makes for a strong baseline in noticing how the features will change with increased flow in increments of half a foot, and determining at what level creates the wash out effect. Definitely a playground at low flow and attainable in play planing hull play boats. You're next Needles attainment will have to be in the Prijon T-Slalom.

Funniest part - "Oh a Swifty. That's the first time I've ever seen a Swifty down this far...That Swifty guy I think does'nt think he can do it." What's also funny, is you said you haven't seen a Swifty down that far before...does that mean you have seen a Swifty at Tohickon before, just not that far down? Do not recall seeing the Swifty at the Take Out...and the green kayaker got mashed into the rafter/Shredder train...which we assisted in recovering his kayak.

Must have been some newbie kayakers. Just dont even bother to see whats going on around them. I know commercial rafts consider them as fair game. Being an open boater I have heard the conversation in a raft plotting to run over me. Amazed to see two MEs out there. Bought one back when they first came out. Went to a smaller boat and the ME sat for years and the wood rotted away. Couple of years ago I rebuilt it and was amazed at what a great boat it is. Big enough to carry camping gear or another body. Bought a used raft from the NOC years ago and hated that thing. Allways had a drunkin scurvy crew who wouldnt follow instructions

I have mentioned the need for groups to space out often and it's good practice. everyone is a good swimmer and comes through in the end though. groups bunching up and creating issues have been an issue long before this crew 10 - 15 years ago with other crews so I'm an advocate of people being pot and alcohol free on the river.

Oh yes, our funnest Tohickon trip yet! Right on, Frankenstein DIY Kayak sure called the warning multiple times..as well as those beep beeps, haha, but that's what happened at Chute, got too jammed up even though I turned around to get behind The Purple Haze before hand and then ended up upside down with the inflatable green kayak above me. Frankenstein DIY Kayak sure knows how to call it...there's a scene of him precisely giving us that advice before running Blue Hole at the "Bloomington" section of the North Branch of the Potomac River - at 5:57: "Kayaking the North Branch of the Potomac River: The 2023 September Whitewater Release (963cfs)" - th-cam.com/video/9JeTIG7ad4g/w-d-xo.html. @@FrankensteinDIYkayak "Boater in front of the raft, move it" - You sure did mention it, way more than once, and it was funny when you said, "we need a little airhorn or something," after Captain Glenn said, "try not to run over Steven," haha. It wasn't like those stories when you have said, "move it," how some have taken it as, "MOVE IT!" Like with the mushroom story at Moorefield Canyon, you always bring the best stories! Another good one, and fine example of you mentioning to "space out" was just before running Blue Hole at the "Bloomington" section of the North Branch of the Potomac River - at 5:57: "Kayaking the North Branch of the Potomac River: The 2023 September Whitewater Release (963cfs)" - th-cam.com/video/9JeTIG7ad4g/w-d-xo.html

I've done so many trips where a swim or mishap would have been prevented with a little spacing out but I would have been called an a@#$%^e if I would have yelled loudly enough. @@FrankensteinDIYkayak You really made that point and drove it home starting at 13:58, seems likely for most crews, but not with this one, that would respect and heed the cautionary advice out of concern for the best interest of everyone. The green kayaker who swam at Hat's Rock, at 31:06, almost got ran over, which is why I think he smacked The Purple Haze with his paddle, as he got squeezed in the pocket both rafts and the Shredder (our crew helps to assist his recovery). You sure called it with, "we're gonna have a big mash up here!"

That was a great day for a race. The ground work is set for the next race. Liked the sound effects in the video. The North Branch is always a great time.

The most ideal weather conditions yet, and you so know it...and nailed it....always a great time (that so should become the motto), from 400 to 1,500cfs from how we know that treasured paradise. Looking forward to seeing how this paves the way for next year's turnout, and perhaps the next classic race of the region.

Great instructional material and wrap up on attaining tips and overall technique after the last attainment. Keep up the teaching moments in future videos; the explanation helped to make this one to pull the viewer in more, and stand out in contrast to your other videos. It was a fun watch with the drone like view on the first and most vigorous chute! That one sure looked to be the chute with the greatest/steepest gradient of all of the attainment options, and be the most energy demanding chute/section of the river wide ledge of the Mighty Potomac.

This is somewhat a tricky spot but also somewhat straight forward. there is a strip of slower less turbulent water in the middle of the outflow that if you get the boat in you can advance easier. it is similar at many levels one has to just surf their way to the best spot then attain. entrance to 100 yd dash is the next level of accomplishment which I hope to get on video. Comments from other attainers, their technique and how and why they choose their gear would be cool
