I've never snared crabs with a line and bait before. Cages always work well, but you need a boat. I guess it's like a steak, when they show pink color in the pot, they are ready. I thought the Redbone hound might retrieve them when he wasn't digging for clams.

@ I was probably 10 or 12 years old the first time there. The roof of left side, facing it was caved into the room. Years later it was cleaned out and had stabilizing jacks in it. This guy descending a cliff face in sandals, carrying a water bottle and filming it all is a prime example of how NOT to hike down a slippery cliff face. These are the kind of people that ruin it for other people as in trail closures due to fatal accidents. But these types manage to keep emergency personnel busy. I am thankful he did not get hurt; what he did was extremely foolish and dangerous.

Well, since there are multiple water crossings throughout the hike, the Teva's made the most sense if you don't want to be taking your hiking boots off & on all day. Also, these were the only shoes I brought for the entire hike, in hindsight I would of wore hiking boots for the 10 mile hike in.

I hiked to these ruins twice and never did get up to the actual ruins. You’re right about the ankle twisting rocks at the start of the trail. There is another approach to the ruins from the other side of the Verde river, and you do have to cross the river from that approach. Fun stuff!

It's probably better that people not know this so these amazing ruins don't get destroyed or vandalized - best that only the 14 mile hike is mentioned. I've been to these ones a few times as well, and fortunately so far they haven't been wrecked beyond present conditions. Although these ones are pretty well known, there are some interesting other things in the general area, I know of some other neat stuff that's within 50 feet of a busy road that almost nobody knows about (and hopefully they stay that way).

BTW, I did not mention the 181 access on purpose, hoping the 14 mile hike would keep most folks away. If a location is not already on TH-cam (as Sycamore ruins are), I'm not indicating the exact location, as seen in my visit to Towel Creek Ruins (near Camp Verde) this past June (Search for Prehistoric Cliff Dwellings). I've been to Sedona many times but have become interested in cliff dwellings just last year & did not realize there were so many sites in the area.
