Roxette's Per Gessle on Marie Fredriksson, their success, Joyride the Musical, & Roxette's new tour.
Born on January 12, 1959, in Halmstad, Sweden, Per Gessle is a celebrated musician, singer, and songwriter, most famously known as one-half of the iconic pop duo Roxette. Alongside Marie Fredriksson, Gessle propelled Roxette to international stardom in the late 1980s and 1990s with an impressive array of hits, including "The Look," "Listen to Your Heart," "It Must Have Been Love," and "Joyride"-all of which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. This achievement helped cement Roxette's status as the second biggest-selling Swedish band of all time, surpassed only by ABBA.

There was, sadly, tragedy in the story of Roxette with Marie Fredriksson's health struggles and eventual passing. In 2002, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which she bravely battled for several years. Despite her illness, Fredriksson continued to perform and record music, displaying remarkable resilience and dedication to her craft. Unfortunately, her health issues persisted, leading to her tragic passing on December 9, 2019.
Gessle's career commenced in the late 1970s with the Swedish band Gyllene Tider, enjoying considerable success in Sweden. Known for his knack for crafting catchy melodies and evocative lyrics, Gessle has been a pivotal figure in the music industry, both as a performer and a composer. Beyond his work with Roxette, he has released several solo albums and continued to leave an indelible mark on the pop and rock music scenes, maintaining a lasting legacy in global pop culture.
Per Gessle had announced a Roxette tour in 2025 with Lena Philipsson as singer, and also a musical using Roxette’s songs.

Addiction is a world nobody can understand unless they have been there, it utterly shatters relationships, with loved ones, family, friends and ultimately yourself, once you have tasted that euphoria, time and time again, you are only ever searching for the first time! To get clean and stay clean is a mountain that very few scale.. It's hard waking up each morning knowing you are an addict, and you must stay clean. The damage it does to your body and mind is incomprehendable, people are to quick to judge.
When is it on? As I cant find the video re Per Gessle. :-)
Not sure depends who sends me their photo and release first! 🎉
@@popthehistorymakers Fair enough. I will just have to keep my eyes open then ;-)
I knew everything in this documentary already, and I'm not even a fan. There was no new information here - Steve, you over sold it.
@@MyMpc1 I didn’t. But hey can’t win em all!
I randomly saw Dana last night performing at the Blues Kitchen Shoreditch, what a blessing and honor. I looked for any interview I could find with her, this is brilliant, what an icon and living legend. ❤
@@marilonarts yes she’s spectacular and what a life!
I loved Boy Bands growing up. I was so young when CITA were around. I have such a varied music collection. Mainly it's pop though! It's fascinating hearing boy band members experiences of the industry! A very unforgiving one. Benjamin sounds like he's content with what he achieved. Just wished he had more solo success. Sad that it's unlikely Benjamin will perform with CITA again. I totally understand it. His solo album is very good. Well composed & Ben vocally sounds great.
@@yousafsabir7224 although it seems as if he doesn’t want to, i still think it might be a possibility but not that likely. He’s a great interview partner
50:07 Curious comment that Simon makes Bowie's death and how, essentially, information wasn't shared with the public. He also mentions Prince, and as with George Michael, I had a sense with all of them, there was more going off in their private lives that impacted their health - both mental and physical - than we were told.
Florian was probably developing early cancer symptoms, thus appearing slender and frail.
She's great. I only knew bits and pieces about her life, so this interview was good for giving a greater insight. She's been through a lot but always somehow seemed to remain level-headed and just kept going, and hasn't fallen into the trap of victim hood. It seems as if she's always been aware that challenges are really lessons to learn, and she uses them to become a more evolved human being.
@@anonnymous4684 I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with that comment. She’s unique

I will love and adore this woman and everything about her for the rest of my life 🖤 (as for SS: I can’t even imagine what they could have done, where they could and would have gone on future projects… too bad [and sad] what one persons attitude, ego, jealousy and irrational, unnecessary rage can do)

What a great interview Steve. It felt like 2 long time friends having a conversation than an interview. Peter is so open, hilarious. My only complaint is it’s too short a conversation 😂 could watch and listen for hours

An absolutely stunning singer and musician with Imagination - I loved their music!! that trio of the three of them, singing and playing the synth on those brilliant dance tracks, were so ahead of their time. I loved Leee John’s voice, such a great singer and he always made me crack up laughing with his sense of humour, he didn’t take himself too seriously. Absolute legends, that band. The only music in the 1980s, with perhaps the exception of some of Culture Club’s music, that made me want to dance, even though I can’t dance!! An absolutely brilliant band, no doubts about that.

Listening to them talking about how they loved singing with eachother on stage and how they taught Madonna to love singing with them all i could hear in my mind was the three of them singing Rain on the Girly show (which to this day is the best Madonna ever sounded)

Steve, this is a great interview! I have been doing a deep dive lately on Madonna (as a almost 49 yr old man) and enjoyed this interview. I remember your interviews back in the day and at THAT time, I was an aspiring drummer in Nashville TN. Hearing the Glen Campbell story from Donna, and hearing so many stories about my friends at that time, it really hits home for me. So many people involved with amazing recordings that got shafted because they weren't the "chosen ones" in Nashville, is unfortunately a story that continues today. Nonetheless, my deep dive into Madonna and her tours has brought me to a place of reflection about my life then and now. Music is in such a weird place. Pop music at that time was so much fun and really inspiring. The danceability (if such a word exists) of Madonna's music in those days far exceeds what is currently on the charts now. The exuberance and fun that comes through on those records shows us that from 1955 to 1993, Pop music was a wonderful genre to enjoy. It's unfortunate that the digital age has deprived us of originality and true art. Donna and Niki were such an integral part of the sound of that time and their contributions to popular music should never be forgotten. It's important to catalogue these interviews and forever archive these important words. I remember Truth or Dare when it came out. I remember Prince being the musical genius of his time. But Madonna had such an incredible impact on performance for women and recording great music of the day, that she got overlooked and often chastised for her sexuality (albeit Prince was just an androgynous Madonna) because she was a woman. And in the 80's, a woman was still not supposed to explore her sexuality. Obviously those times have changed, but the importance of Madonna's contributions should never be diminished due to newer artists becoming stars. Just as the Ella Fitzgerald's, Diana Ross's, Chaka Khan's, Karyn White's of her time, the Britney Spears', Christina Aguilera's, Taylor Swift's, Lady Gaga's of the world will be a template and future success of women in pop music. Madonna rose up and took the crown for queens everywhere. And a big part of that reason why Madonna was able to do that was because of the two women you have in this interview. Niki and Donna deserve so much credit in shaping the sound that became pop royalty. Their harmonies and dance moves were instrumental in providing us with a "sound" that was unmistakable and sonically as important as Prince's guitar sound, or Michael Jackson's "hee hee"! Let's give these ladies a round of applause for what they've contributed to popular music. Not that they haven't heard those applause for many, many years!!
@@popblender thx for that!
love 'no memory'....Maggie looks gr8 !
An enjoyable interview with lots of interesting insight into the world of pop showbiz from a musician's perspective. 'Imagination' is one of my favourite 80s songs. Thanks.

Just listening to the podcasts on Spotify. Really interesting, such a soothing voice Paul had, well that's what I think any how. Can't believe it was 12 days after they wrapped the podcasts up that he went.
How were they disliked in Sweden? Happy Nation album peaked #3 in Albums chart and charted 69 weeks total going 2x Platinum. The Bridge peaked #1 and charted 26 weeks selling over 100.000 copies going Platinum... Flowers peaked #5....

Have always wondered if Ed Cassidy (Spirit) was an influence on Mel. I met Mel in Denver 1992 and wish I’d asked that question.
That is a good question. Next time I will if I get the opportunity!
@@popthehistorymakers very similar kit when I saw Simple Minds in Denver 1992 (Real Life tour) right down to the huge mounted parade drum (has a special name for that drum type but I've forgotten).
I’ve often wondered if Mel was a fan of Spirit’s Ed Cassidy. Mel’s set up with those great big drums is very similar setup to the setup Ed Cassidy used. I’ve not seen anyone else use that setup
Being able to make people laugh at a moment's notice, at the right time, and the right amount, is such a valuable talent. It opens people up and eases tensions
Totally. Also compliments help. We all fall for those too
Too many chefs in the kitchen! Legends but when you hear it all you can see the rise of the solo producer with the technology
It always makes me laugh how this side of the music, commercial, needs so much interjection from everyone else; where in dance music who made the track is who wrote the whole piece, maybe guest musicians etc but yeah its all so many personalities and it can clash
@@NextSound170 I think it’s just the music industry back then. All wanting in and all giving their opinion whether record companies, producers and so on. The guy who did Rhythm is a Dancer talks about remixes that the record company did which were horrible and he stopped them. Opinions are unfortunately like arseholes - everyone has one.
best album in my life❤
Enjoyed the interview. I remember buying the live album Real to Reel in the mid 80s. It was cut-price, and had an interesting cover. I used to listen to it on Saturday mornings; at first I didn't know what to make of it! Gradually I realised they were amazing songs. I really think the Fish era of Marillion was superb, so accomplished. It had everything: music, lyrics and surreal imagery. I was so disappointed when that era ended, but it did feel artistically complete. You couldn't really ask for a better last two albums.
@@iainholmes2735 brilliant comment.
I do agree that there is a strangeness about them. They always appeared to have delays, issues and stumbling blocks. You can tell the director to this day found them difficult to navigate. Ulf was the only true driver. Jenny to some degree. But the fact that Jonas wouldn’t take part is simply odd. Malin being the biggest culprit. I mean it is 30 years on, relax, reflect, rejoice on it. This attitude is making it seem quite dark and depressing. It was a pop group you were part of not a murder trial. I just don’t get the consistent hesitance to engage. But my favourite group and producers. Pity it still seems to be broken between the 4.
@@BASSER81 I think you make some good points.
